Dear Colleen,
My mother's sister Mildred Dotson is married to Russell Heffley, EL's
brother. And in my research I have found that EL's mother and father are 3rd
cousins and they are related to the Dan Hefley bunch alot.
I've already told Aunt Mildred this and she didn't like it much, and I don't
blame her but all of Newton County are related somewhere along the way. But
Uncle Toad was the only child in that family who spelled his name with 2F's
some of his children only used the 1F version. But they are related to Uncle
Dan's family on both sides. I can send you a gedcom file if you want, it has
alot of information on the Heffley's or Hefley's in it. Do you know when
Carol's birthday is? Aunt Mildred didn't know when their anniversary was or
when their son's birthday was. I would love to hear the stories EL has told
you. Aunt Mildred said Athel or "A" as everyone called him, could play the
fiddle so good, she said he had a heart of gold. Lois the only sister
Russell and EL have left living fell on this ice and broke her hip, she had
to have surgery and she just got out of the hospital two days ago, she is
doing alot better. But uncle Russ isn't doing so great after he lost
Custard, and both his sister's in 3 weeks time and my daddy died in between
his two sister's he and my dad were very close, he has just
given up all hope. He has Alzimer's and is going down hill, not fast but you
can still tell he isn't doing so good. Colleen it sure was good talking to
you, would love to hear about EL's
stories and to talk to you some more.

Lori,
Hello Lori,
Della Duck's parents were my grgrandparents, Gaither and Della Hattie George
Duck. My grandmother Mollie, older sister of Della died in 1913 and Gaither
and Della Hattie raised my father. If you are interested, there is a picture
of Gaither and Della Hattie's family at the Historical Museum in
Jasper. There are 2 unidentified children in the picture, I believe they are
my father William Howard Criner (the baby) and my aunt Jessie Criner Hefley
(the little girl).
Hope this helps your research, let me know if I can help in any other way. I
vaguely remember my mother, Ruah Hensley Criner talking about Bailey
Greenhaw and also Bailey Nichols. Just remember the names, nothing else.
Keep in touch, I'm sure we both have information to share. Ella :-)

Thank you so much for your information. I know Judy Woods, she is the one
who sent me the letter with the map to the mill. She and I are related
through Samuel on my side & his brother Garrard on her husbands side. I
have seen your scrapbook page, Great page by the way! My Samuel is quite a
hard fellow to find! He appears to just drop from out of NO WHERE. As a
matter of fact, he married Mollie under his middle name, Nathanel, making it
tough to locate him. (My guess is because there was some scandal involved,
don't know if he was divorced from wife #2 or if she died, and ALL of the
kids from Marriage #3 were born BEFORE he & Mollie married!) I have sent off
for his Death Certificate, but have yet to receive it. I do appreciate your
help more than you will ever know.
Thank you again.

next summer or next my family and others are planning a hiking/4 wheel trip
from Gobbler's Knob down to the swinging bridge at Walnut, then down Piney
Creek to Limestone will take a good part of the day but should see alot of
good things and maybe even get to swim in the creeks again.I hate swimming
pools, just not the same without having run the snakes off the banks or out
of the water so it is our turn to swim.I'm really looking forward to it

Dear Lori,
Sorry, I do not know what caused Della's death. There is a Jearl Duck in
Harrison who is the son of one of the sisters, (maybe Della). He could
probably tell you. His wife's name escapes me right now, but she is into
genealogy somewhat, and could probably tell you quite a few things about
Della. There is also one living sister of Della, her name is Grace Gilmore
and lives here in CA. Happy hunting.

Do you have info on the Lewis Daniels (1858-1937) line? I have info on most
of his descendants but do have some gaps I'm trying to fill in. Would very
much like to share/exchange info. I know I have at least one Young marrying
a Daniels. Renta Young married Harley Daniels son of William "Bill" Daniels
son of Lewis Daniels. Harley Daniels is the brother of the Anias Daniels
that Ray and I were discussing. I have other Youngs in my book but I don't
believe they have any connection to the Daniels line.

Message From: Lori Reddell
Dear Colleen,
I hope I didn't offend you. Believe me I have nothing but love and respect
for the people of Newton County. I wasn't born here, but have been raised
here for the last 30 years and I love this place and the people. My mother
was born and raised in Newton County and after my daddy died I got
interested in genealogy. It got so my family wanted to know
where I had moved they didn't see me anymore. Just between me and you, I
think they wanted to know where I was because the laundry and dished wasn't
done, something they were not used to. To say this has taken over my life
would be putting it mildly. I LOVE GENEALOGY. And the fact that I'm related
to almost every family in a 40 mile radius didn't help. When I got started I
went to the oldest child in mom's family and that being Aunt Mildred Dotson
who married Russell L. Heffley and got as much information as I could and
then hit the library's and the court house and then with ALOT OF HELP from
people on the internet with the same family I found that the Heffley's and
the Hefley's were in fact very much related. Aunt Mildred didn't like it
either she said they were from different families and they were not related
and they were, I felt like I had done something bad by finding out this
information. But in fact I couldn't change history, nor would I want to.
It's not just the Heffley/Hefley it is the Dotson/Dodson the Reddell/Riddell
the Smith's the Campbell's ect. ect. I found out after 23 years of marriage
I was 4th cousins to my husband, well there wasn't a whole lot I could do
about it, I didn't like it, but you can't throw away 23 years of marriage
and 2 kids for that, besides what would I do with the 2 kids, no one in
their right mind would want mine. haha You know like I told Aunt Mildred,
back in the old days when all this started kids didn't have cars or trucks
or phones where they could look for a mate somewhere else, they took what
was there and some of them I'm sure didn't know they were related, some did,
they were told that is a different set, they are not related to us, when in
fact they were related alot. My husband and I have the same great uncle
Cassell Campbell, uncle Cassell married Freddy my husband's great aunt Annie
Reddell and she died, then he married my great aunt Perlie Dotson. And also
Freddy's grandpa Richard Reddell married his 1/2 neice and alot of people
don't know that because they didn't have any children listed for John
Anthony Reddell and Arizona Freeman when in fact they had 5 children, one of
them being Effie Jane Reddell who Richard McKinley Reddell married. So alot
of families are married to cousin's even mine. But that doesn't change the
fact that Newton County has the nicest people and they are very lovely
people who would do anything for anybody even in this day and age. Their
just good people. But I would really like to talk to you again Colleen and
to hear EL stories.
Lori

Judy,
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. After many hours on the internet
last night and today, I finally identified Jim "Fisher" Villines as being
James A. Villines
(b.10/14/1865 d.1/8/1947) with the following ancestry:
Wm M. 'Fishing Bill' Villines (b.1843) & Millie Young
James 'Coplin' Villines (b.1824-Caswell Co., NC) & Jency or Gincy
Reeves
Abraham Villines (b.1777-Nansemond Co., NC) & Nancy McKissack
Hezekiah Villines (b.abt.1751-Nansemond Co., NC) & (not known)
Abraham Villines (b.abt.1715-Nansemond Co., VA) & Prisciller
Isaac Veline (b.abt 1683-Virginia) & Ann Armistead
There seems to be some confusion about whether Nansemond County is in NC or
VA.
I believe I'll be able to trace even farther back using some information I
received through an email back in 1998.
Thanks again for your wonderful work in these endeavors.

I have no idea. Could be though. It had been 40 yrs last summer that I had
been up in there. Alot had changed, but alot was same. But I did not visit
any family because I did not know of any of them still being there. I need
to make another trip and plan this time. Last year I just at the spur of
the moment decided to drive up there over a long weekend. It was hard on
me, bringing back memories of my family and all that we did in our daily
lives. But at the same time it was good for me. I do want to go back befor
