Dear Ella,
Would you happen to know who the parents of Della Duck born 6-3-1890 and
died 4-2-1931 in Mt. Judea she married Bailey Van Nichols. Biley later
married Eula Daniels but they divorced and Bailey is now buried beside Della
in Mt. Judea and my favorite uncle Bailey's son George W. Nichols bought
them a double headstone, he is so sweet and loved his father very much as
did I and alot of other people.

Believe this or not you can still find those see through cases here in
around Newton County. Mostly in Harrison and Dover in the little food stores
and gas stations.

One of my fond food memories were those old see through food cases. With
big logs of balogna and hard wedges of cheese. And pork and beans out of a
can or canned salmon on crackers. That was the life. And of course, wash
it all down with a Grapette out of that chest type cooler.

Message From: Colleen Haynes Rongey
Hello Lori...
Am enjoying your letters to each other...(always did like to read
mail...
This is Colleen Haynes Rongey again...I grew up at Lurton next door to
Uncle
Toad and Aunt Margaret Heffley...My sister Carrol Haynes married their
grandson EL Heffley and they live now in Little Rock...I have heard EL say
that his dad was a 2F Heffley and mother was a one F Hefley (no relation)
...His grandmother was Margaret Cheatham and descended from the Sam Davis
line on Big Creek...
I'll be posting something on this on my Heffley page on Woodard's of
Tarlton
web site...soon...my brotherinlaw is quite a historian..he does not have
email, however...and I do try to write down every thing he says because he
listened to all his family stories (and the neighbors, too) ... EL can tell
you about the two Heffley/Hefley clans...
Now, Preacher Dan Hefley's bunch at Lurton are a totally different clan
to these two and they came to NCo much later...The 2 F Heffleys say they are
no kin to the 1 fs, and I hope not, because ELs parents were both...the 1 f
Hefley of his mothers part are related to the author/historian James Carl
Hefley and he writes about his cousin EL and him catching blue lizards when
they were kids together there on Big Creek...
In his book Way Back When by James Carl Hefley...he writes about many
of
the early timers on Big Creek and where they came from. All you NCo folks
need to get all his books and read/ keep them with your NcHistory...
In the middle nineties, while on our family vacation...I met James Carl
and his wife Marty Hefley when I went with my sister Carrol and her husband
EL Heffley down to MtJudea to their annual Hefley/Heffley family reunion.
James Carl told me of his Mark Twain Writers Conferrence held each summer
in
Hannibal, Missouri where they now live...and invited me to come ... so...I
went there four summers for a week of wonderful writing
inspiration/instruction from a lot of authors they brought in...My idea of a
really fun vacation...
James Carl is professor of writing/english/history there at Hannibal
LaGrange College and they let them use their campus for the four day writers
conferrence, fed us and entertained us...people attended from all over the
country.and we made lifelong friends...His last conference was in 1996 or 97
when they stopped. His daughter Cindy Allison was the in charge person and I
think she has another job and James Carl has been busy writing so this will
never be again...
Since I do believe that nothing (or very little) in our life happens by
accident, I will always be grateful for the timing of that mountain
vacation where I met James Carl again...Knew him when we were both children
and this was in the 40s...he was age of my sister Pat and they were
childhood
friends. The NCo Historical has some of his books to sell...get one.
Go visit my Nco web sites and write me...
Thanks. Colleen Rongey

Diana what Robinsons are you related to? there was more than 1 family in
newton co. I am looking for descendants of Robert Rufus Robinson and he
had a half brother Thomas Harris..... Thomas Harris's Dad was also Thomas
Harris and he was married to Abbey Strode who also was married to a
Robinson first.... Now here is what I need a connecton to: the old Thomas
Harris(My husbands grandpa) was married prior to Abbey Strode and he and
that first wife had 6 children. our family never knew any of those kids.
at least this later generation my age didn't.. they lived around the
Mossville area and the old Thomas is burried there and probably the first
wife but no stone... we have never been able to find out what her name was.
I imagine they were married back in Tennessee as that is where they came
from originally and the older Thomas was born in Tn. No one in our Harris
family or Robinson family has a picture of grandpa Harris. He died 6 mo.
before the birth of Dad(young Tom) I believe if I could find the line of
descendants of the first 6 kids born to old Thomas that they would probably
have a picture and info. I do have their names but don't know what happened
to them after old thomas died as in later census they are not living with
Abbey. does any of this make sense. ? b. harris

Patricia, I can send you a genealogy report of everything I have on the
early Sparks. Yes, I would like a list of William Robinson's siblings. I
have done a lot of searching the last two years on the roads from Roane Co.,
TN to Newton County and I think I would like to venture into the 1900s with
some of my branches. If your folks went to Okla then on to California, you
know the 1900s would take in the depression. Have you read the book 'Grapes
of Wrath'? My grt grandfather Richard Taylor Barnard moved to Okla. abt.
1901, but that is where he stayed and raised his children. All but the
youngest child was born in Newton County. I will need your E-mail to send
the genealogy report. Joy Barnard Baldwin

pictures of J.P.S. &S.(R.) Sparks if you are interested. I am in California
so can't get to the cemetery. We may go to AR. in May ,but don't know if I
can get to there. I don't even know if I could find anything or not, for I
was abut 12 the last time I was there visiting my grfathers sister Maude
Williams.
Thanks ever so much,

Patricia, If your John Peterson Sparks was b. 1846 m. 2nd Sarah Russell who
bore him 12 children, I may can help you with ancestors. I have this John
Peterson as s/o Hiram C. Sparks. Hiram C. is brother to my grt grt
grandmother Rachel Rebecca Sparks. I visited Shiloh Cemetery this summer
and there were some small markers for McGarrah and Baker, but someone had
written Sparks on them. Do you know who they might be?
If you are
near Jasper, there is a Bradley House Museum that has some excellent old
records for a small museum. I found a 'Sparks Quarterly Magazine in there
that had a picture of Rachel Rebecca and there's marriage records and census
records also. My nephew took me to several old cemeteries and I took lots
and lots of pictures and couldn't wait to get home and try to find them in
my files.

Carol,
Sorry, I do not have anything on Hiram Best. When was he born? I have some
info on two Hiram Sparks. One was Hiram T. son of Samuel L. Sparks and Sarah
Isabelle Beckham and the other was Hiram Turner Sparks who married Minerva
Priscella Belle Whiteley, daughter of Seleta Beckham (sister of Sarah
Isabell
Beckham) and Samuel Henry Whiteley). In case I have made mistakes all you
Sparks, Whiteley and Beckham researchers feel free to jump in here! There
are
several other Hiram Sparks but they do not connect to my Casey line (I don't
think) so they are not in my main database. I may have some info on them in
my hard copy files. Will check and let you know. Sorry I could not be more
help.
