The Sutton Place today...the old red gas pump, dated from 1917-20, that belonged to my grandfather is to the right, and back of the monument in this picture. It used to sit at the old handle factory.
In June of 1998, the memorial to my Grandparents was completed...rocks from their old house were used to make the monument...which reads:
Home Place of
I.C. and Cornelia White Sutton
Built in 1907 by George Hamm
Irving Clarence and Cornelia moved to the area in 1915. In 1921, I. C. opened up a general store and grist mill. Then about 1925, he began making split bottom chairs. This led into the Lurton Furniture and Handle Factory and other enterprises, providing work for many people in the area. Cornelia established and named the Lurton Post Office. She was appointed Post Master December 20, 1916. The name Lurton was chosen from a list of names submitted by her. Lurton was the married name of her Sister, Mattie, married to Marion Lurton. Cornelia was Postmaster until 1947, when her Daughter-in-law, Ruby Hefley Sutton was appointed. The property, where the Lurton School, and now the Community Building is located, was donated by I. C. Sutton to be used for Community service. That was also the site of some great Lurton Picnics sponsored in part, by I. C. Sutton, years ago. I. C. and Cornelia, along with both of their mothers, Sons, and other relatives are buried at the Tarlton Cemetery, down road 123 about 1 mile.

This is my grandparents' house where mine now sits. My house is exactly the same width and length of the main part of the old house. I am on the same foundation. I did not add the part on that is to the left.
Thanks go to Lloyd Sutton for the above...what a wonderful thing you have done!
