Uncle Howard was a farmer and supplemented his income by making whiskey. He
was said to be one of the best in the country. The story has been told that
he made three grades of whiskey. One was for passersby, one for the local
trade and one that was charcoaled and shipped to Little Rock and sold as
bonded whiskey.
Another story is told, that he was arrested for making whiskey and he asked
the judge for a postponement of his trial, so that he could go home and get
his crops in, so that his family would have a means of getting by while he
served his sentence. The judge granted him this time, and true to his word,
Uncle Howard came back and turned himself in, as soon as his crops were
gathered. Another story is, that he went before a Federal Judge at Little Rock
for whiskey making again. The judge told Uncle Howard that he would turn him
loose if he would promise that he would never make whiskey again. Uncle
Howard told him, "Your honor, you know I can't do that. I have to look after
the baby."
Uncle Howard was married three times. This list of his children and
stepchildren may not be complete.
