James Martin Clark, grandson of Abraham Clark and Mary Ann Edgmon, obtained a
land grant of 160 acres in 1880. The above house was built on that land, located
Boxley, Newton County, Arkansas. To prove his homestead, some of the requirements
included the clearing of land and the construction of a house. The 1880 census indicates
that James Martin was living on this land when the census was taken. Land records
dated 1881 state that 10 acres had been cleared and a log cabin constructed. Hence,
the original portion of the above house was built circa 1880-1881. In later years,
additional rooms were added, as well as a porch and tin roof.
