Generation No. 1

1.  JAMES SAMUEL2 HESS (SAMUEL1) was born Abt. 1814 in Lawrence County, 
Arkansas, and died April 02, 1874 in Stone County, Arkansas.  He married 
ELIZABETH WELLS July 19, 1838 in Independence County, Arkansas.  She was 
born Abt. 1824 in Tennessee, and died Aft. 1894 in Stone County, Arkansas.

James appears on the 1840 Izard County census in Washington Township.  He 
was living near his uncle, Solomon Hess.  The census shows one male age 
20-30 years (James);  one male under 5 years (John);  one female age 
20-30 (Elizabeth);  and an unidentified female age 10-15 years.  This 
may have been Elizabeth's sister, or another family member.  James was 
a farmer.

James moved his family to Newton County, AR prior to 1850.  The 1850 
Newton Co. census shows the family living in Jackson Township.  Six 
children are listed with James and Elizabeth on the census.

The family moved to Pope Co. prior to 1857.  The 1860 Pope Co. census 
shows the family living in North Fork Township.  The census shows James, 
Elizabeth and nine children.  Living with the family was Nancy Lafferty, 
age 29, b. AR; Joanna Lafferty, age 12, b. AR and William W. M. Lafferty, 
age2, b. AR.  James' personal property is valued at $700 and his real 
estate is valued at $500.  James moved his family to Stone County, AR 
prior to 1874.  James died in 1874.

Elizabeth appears on the 1880 Stone Co. census and with her is her daughter 
Alice age 16;  James B., age 22 and his wife Eliza J., age 21 b. AL.

He died Unknown.
