Apparently, Edward and Susan had at least 4 more children than those appearing in the 1860 census, but the names of those children are unknown at this time.

Evelyn does believe however, that William C. Hale is the oldest son of Edward so he has been added to this family. According to Eugene Lester Hale, Edward's mother was a full blooded Cherookee Indian, however, we have no documentation on this yet, nor do we have a name for his mother.

Edward was a staunch Union man (Civil War) and had to leave the area and went to Little Rock, Arkansas and died there. Edward was the postmaster of Borland from 1849 to 1857. Edward was also the Sherriff of Searcy County, Arkansas from 1836 to 1838.

Mead J. Haile (b 1812) & his wife Livy Ann (b 1817) to his sister Elizabeth (Haile) Jckson (1809)

Dexter Cooke County Texas
August 27th, A.D. 1881

My Dear old sister Lizy,
It is with a greateal of pleasure that I take pen in hand while Livy Ann and Milly Ann is seated just by stiching with their needles in the plesant airy hall this very warm evening while Stone Wall and Mary whose name is Whites son^Leeford Ambrose White is in the farm gathering cotten and while Jol B is gone as deligate to the association. Stone Wall can pick one hundred pounds and lay up four or five hours at twelve on account of heat. I wrote you a short sketch the other day hurriedly, but now, I want to give you more satisfaction. We are in distress on the account of short crops and warmist weather that I have ever seen to hold solong, no rain since the last of May and still no prospects for rain. The average corn crop at a guess will be some eight or ten bushels.
Pge 2.

Livy ways about two hundred pounds and gets around very well. We have been going to church a good deal this very warm weather. It is a small matter for us to hitch up our team of mach bys and eighty dollar two horse wagon and drive five miles to church. Some times stay all night. We drove out to Dexter sometime since and heard Dr. J.R. Graves from Tennessee preach a very excellent sermon and took dinner with our youngest daughter, whose name is Coe. Her husband is Deputy Sheriff in this department of the County. Since that time went to Callisburg to our ministers and Deacons meeting. Had quite an interesting time and some times we drive to Whitesboro, which is 12 miles and around. Generally, we have a pair of the best of horses, keep them fat. But alsas for me I made such an effort to make a big crop neglected my bible and my ministry but the Lord has thawarted my purposes.......M J and L A Haile to Elizabeth Jackson

I also remember John Sharber from a boy and what a promising young mane he was when we left that country. James Jackson, I don't recollect, but I recollect your aunt Inda mighty well and how much I always did think of her in particular. Give my respects to all your sisters Lew as well as your brothers. August the 28th Sunday morning at home in the cool shade of the open hall while Livy and Milly are clearing up the table after breakfast this very warm morning. Dear old sister Milly Ann Lytle, I attempt to address you once more in life. I sent short sketch to you the other day, but not satisfactory and as I am writing three letters in one for all to read, it is not nessary for to repeat the things that I have written. Milly Ann, I had a long conversation with Lawyer Blanton, the other day who is the son of Captain Blanton who was first captain of James Lytles company of confederal troops. Mr. Blanton has been her several years. I often meet with him. He is hightly in esteem in our country. I also have frequent interviews with Tom Alison when he was in this country. He told me that old Billy Poplin was enquiring after me and if he is living go and see him and read these letters to him in his old age. I am just past 70 years of age. M. J. and L.A. Dear Sister:
This will inform you that we received yours of the 8th which gave us a great deal of satisfaction indeed. Our health is as good as could be expected of old people as we are such warm weather. It is the warmist and dryist weather that I have ever seen. No rain here since the last of May to amount to any thing. The consequince is we are making but little produce here. We expected to make a thousand dollars worth of cotton. We won't make more than two hundred dollars worth and expected to make not less than eight hundred bushels of corn. Won't make two hundred bushels. So you may guess at our condition and the whole country is in the same fix. My family is composed of Live and myself, and Joel Basket, who is our youngest son and youngest child 25 years of age and Mary Elizabeth only son, who is 12 years of age. Excuse me for so hurried a letter. Stone wall is waiting on me in a hurry to go to the office. Milly Ann write agaiin. I will try to do better next time.

My Dear Sister:

Under the providence of God, your unworth Brother is permited to write you a few lines this side the grave for which I feel verry greatful, in as much as I did not expect to live so long. When I left old Tennessee, I don't know that I have wrote to you since your letter which informed us of your rebuilding and in referance to your troubles with Harvy. You a nough to do to wait on him. My health is not as good now as it was a few weeks past but I am able to ride and drive the wagon to town and soforth. I am afflicted in the back in same way that our old father was. I am verry lonesome indeed since Livy's death and more that that our daughter Locky McDaniel died last fall with Jaundice leaving five children. The oldest a girl thirteen years of age, a baby one year old. they live a half miles from us. Joel the youngest child lives with us, his wife brought a son two months past, it died at two weeks old with hives. His wife has been confined ever siince or nearly so with a rising of the breast and still in the bed. Milly Ann lives with us. Also Locky was the baby when we left Tennessee, my son Jackson and Eliza Jane( Page 2) my daughter lives in Missouri. Jacksons address: Jackson O Haile, Billings Station, Christian County, Mo.. Eliza Janes address: David S. Brown, Marianville, Lawrence County, Mo., which is four hundred miles from us and the same country we lived before the war. Virginia Catharines address is L.D. Young or rather L.D. and V.C. Young, Clyde Station, Callahan County, Texas which is two hundred miles from us. James T. Haile address: Bowie, Montague County, Texas which is sixty miles from us. Josaphene Coe lives in Dexter, five miles from us. Leeford lives half a mile. Livy and Locky was buried one mile west of us in our church yard where our membership is. Leeford, Lock and her basband, Joel and his wife, and Jimmy and his wife and two of their sons all belong there, called Concord Church Shilo association. The location known as Hiberts School House southeast of Gainesville, 14 miles 4 miles from Red River which divides us from the Indian Nation.

We have fine crops both of corn and cotton. Money plenty, stock high, grain low, cotton nine and ten cents, religion languishing, Gainesville is booming. Briant Landers son practicing medicine there. He married Sandy Moons daughter.

Yours as ever, your Brother
