Notes for John Haile/Hale:
The following notes came from FTW CD #30:

From Research of Denzil Mauldin:

1. Some researchers indicate that John Hale, son of Nicholas and Ann (Long) Hale, is the same John listed in the will of Richard Haile, dated 1784. Richard being the son of Francis Haile. However, a study of these early families comparing available dates and events prove that John Hale, above and Richard Haile, son of Francis, were of approximately the same age. Note that the two Haile families, Nicholas Haile and Francis Haile, resided and were close association with some of the same neighboring families of Bedford County, Virginia. One of the individuals was William Arthur who was a witness to the wiff of Guy Smith, father-in-law to Abednigo Haile. According to the 1782 Tax List for Bedford co., VA., as copied by Valerie Jean Suddarth, 26962 Via Escorial, Mission Viejo, CA. 92691, Jan. 23, 1989, the following entry is listed:

'Richard Haile, John Haile his son, negroes-Bob, Dafney, Prudy, Rachell, Benn, Randoll and Amy. Personal property and tithes: 5 pounds 2 shillings 3 pence. Free whites over 21-one, Slaves- seven, horses-four, cattle-seventeen, White tithes over 16-two, Blacks over 16-three.

(Jean notes that Richard's son, John, according to this record who have been born ca 1761-1766, or age 16-21). These dates support the theory that John Haile, husband of Nancy "Ann" Overstreet, is not the son of Richard Haile.)

2. 1810 Census, Bedford County., VA. John Haile and wife bother over the age of 45, and family: one male born ca 1784-94, and one male & one female born ca 1794-1800. ( From these age groups of children, it would appear that the male b. 1784-94 is Meshack Haile, & the male b. 1794-1800 is William.)

3. See A History of the Myers, Overstreet, & Gray Families by Jourdon G. Myer, 1984, pp. 296-297. Listed as the children of Thomas Overstreet b. ca 1720 & d. 14 Dec. 1791, are Thomas Overstreet, Jr., b Oct. 15, 1744, Nancy Anne Overstreet b. ca 1748, m. ca 1767 John Hale, William Overstreet d June 24.

(Note- John Haile, husband of Nancy Overstreet, would had to been born ante 1750 to have wed in about 1767.)

Notes for Mead Haile: The following notes came from FTW CD #30:

Mead Haile lived in the Flat Creek Community of Bedford County, Tn.

His death in Bedford Co., Tennessee in Sept 1850 is documented in the Chancery Court Records of that county.

There is some confusion about the name of his wife. Some say she was ELIZABETH " Betsy" Jackson because a marriage bond for Mead Hail and Betsy Jackson has been located in Bedford Co., VA. Others say his wife was MARY because Mead and Mary Hail are found on the Bedford Co., TN., census that was enumerated on the 28th day of August 1850. This census date is just one month before the documented death date of Mead Hail. According to that TN census record Mary was born in 1789+-making her too young to be the mother of Meads oldest child who was born in 1800+-. Possibly Mead was married twice and Mary was the mother of his younger children.

According to Lila Coley, she believes Mary is her 3rd g-grandmother because, in addition to the census record, that is the name given by Carmine Jackson in the 1983 Rutherford County Historical Society publication, "THE HISTORY OF VERSAILLES, THE 10TH DISTRICT AND ITS PEOPLE". Carmine descended from Mead Hail's daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" b 1809 and was known personally by me to be a thorough researcher.

!Will-Note: The courthouse in Bedford County, TN, burned. The will of Mead Haile did not survive the fire. It IS known from other documents that survived that Mead James and Frances Marion Jackson, son-in-law, were executors of the will.

!Question: When did Elizabeth 'Betsey' Jackson Haile die and when did Mead marry Mary? Dick Poplin, County Historian for Bedford Co, TN, said that Elizabeth Hail who married Francis Jackson II is the daughter of Mary and Mead Haile. This means that Elizabeth would have been dead by 1809.

!Court Case: James F. Hudgins of MO applies to Bedford Co, TN for an order against Francis Jackson, Executor of the will of Mead Hail, deceased, to pass the portion of Mead's estate which would normally go to John Haile, deceased son of Mead Hail, to the children of John Hail. The petition names Mead Hail as the granfather of these children. The children are Jackson Hale, Sarah E. Hale, William T. Hale, and John Randolph Hale.
