Thomas Kemble Will, March 5, 1765


I Thomas Kemble of Northampton in the County of Burlington and Western Division of the Province of New Jersey yeoman being indisposed of body but of Sound and Perfect Disposing Mind and Memory. Thanks be to God. Therefore calling to Mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die Do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament.

In manner following is that to say Imprimes it is my Will and I do hereby order that all my just Debts and Funeral Charges be well and truly Paid by my son Samuel Kemble out of his own Estate for considerations hereafter mentioned.

Item I give and bequeath to my Son in law, William Edgman and Elizabeth his wife and to their heirs and assigns forever All that Piece and Parcel of Land with the appurtenances being at the North East corner of my plantation where I now dwell in Northampton aforesaid bounded on the Northeast, by Joseph Burr and Antroms Land Fifteen Chains and by my own Land South Twenty Degrees West fifteen chains then South sixty nine Degrees East fifteen chains to Joseph Burr and by the same to the place of beginning containing about twenty two Acres and one half of Land more or less as also my Negro man called Isaac and my Negro girl called G Jenney.

I also give to my said Son in law, William Edgman all my Joyners and Carpenters Tools whatsoever and also ten Sheep.

Item I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Mary Stackhouse and to the lawful heirs of her body forever all that Piece and Parcel of Land lying and adjoining on the West end of Joshua Humphries house and Lott in Mount Holly on the South side of the Mill be the same more or less.

Item I give and bequeath unto my Son in law, William Jewell and to my daughter Rachael his wife my Negro girl named Sarah but not at the Disposal of my said son in law without the free will of my said daughter Rachael and her signing to the sale.

Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson William Murfin and to the lawful heirs of his body forever and all that my piece and Parcel Land lying on the East side of High Street in Mount Holly adjoyning to Joseph Burr's Land and others: and also my Negro boy called Jacob.

Item I give and bequeath unto my Dearly beloved wife Mary Kemble my best Feather bed and furnitures my Mollatto woman called Dinah and my Negro girl called Nancy also my burled maple case of drawers and my Wild Cherry Tree Tea Table and Spice Box and my half dozen new Chairs, that Chest Called her chest all at her own disposal and in part of her Dower.

Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Kemble...and also the use and benefit of my Negro girl called Darens also the use and benefit of my houses where my son Vespation lately dwelt with the Land therewith fenced in, be it more or less During her natural life for and in lieu of her dower.

Item I give and bequeath to my grand daughter Susanna Kemble my Negro girl called Darens after the decease of my Said wife Mary Kemble.

Item I give and bequeath to my son Samuel Kemble and to his heirs and assigns forever at that the remaining part of my land and plantaion where I now dwell part being in Burlington and part in Northampton being the same more or less excepting what is already bequeathed and the Uses referred Under this proviso nevertheless that he my said son Samuel Kemble his executors or admiistrators do Well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto my wife Mary Kemble the sum of five pounds current money of New Jersey yearly and every year during her natural life and also keep and maintain for her one Cow and one horse with hay and grass during her life and also pay or cause to be paid what shall be herein ordered and directed as well as what is herein before ordered and directed.

Item I give and bequeath to my granson John Murfin my Negro boy called Daniel and the sum of twenty five pounds current Money of New Jersey to be paid by my son Samuel within four years after my decease.

Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Abigail Haines the sum of five shillings sterling or Money of England to be paid by my son Samuel Kemble.

Item I give and bequeath unto my son Vespation Kemble the sum of five pounds sterling or Money of England, to be paid by my son Samuel Kemble aforsaid. I having given him considerable already.

Item All the residue and remainder of my movable or Personal estate I order to be sold by Executors or the Survivor of them with all convenient speed after my decease.

Item the money rising from the sale of my said personal estate I give and bequeath as followeth that is to say One full equal half part thereof I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Mary Kemble. And the two thirds parts of the remainder to aforsaid son Samuel Kimble

I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal fifth day of the first month in ye year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred sixty five. signed Thomas Kemble
