Faces at Alum Cove

When we were real little, we would lay on a quilt and look up into the sky and find clouds shaped like giant elephants, alligators, and dinosaurs or we might make out a cowboy with a tall white hat or see a face with big puffy cheeks. As the clouds moved, those images would soon drift apart and disappear. The brief show of shapes and faces was often gone as soon as it formed.

The faces in the below pictures are in stone and have no doubt been there for eons. They may simply be illusions that have been formed over time, but they are still really neat and we can't help but be fascinated by them.

Some people say they are anthropomorfic features (an'thro po môr´fik), meaning that an object that is not human, takes on human form or attributes that result in resembling a human in some way.

A few of the faces in rocks look like aliens and gargoyles. But many of them look like human faces. You can readily see the big face profile in the following two pictures, see how many other faces you can find hint: there are at least twenty faces! The pictures are of the Natural Bridge at Alum Cove, near Deer in Newton County, Arkansas.

The first picture was taken by Mark Stanberry in May 2001. He told us he can also see something in the center of the picture that looks like a ghost. Do you see it? The second picture was taken a couple of years ago when we were on a family hike at Alum Cove. We also see an image of a man in our picture. Take a look and let us know what you see.

Mark's words "...if those of us that see them are a few fries short of a happy meal..." gave us the inspiration for the following section. If you have pictures that also have faces in them send them in and they will be posted in the Few Fries Short section. (Say that fast ten times!)

Even if you are afraid to look for faces, take a look at the pictures, they show some good scenery.
