The Last Will and Testament of Edwin Edgerton (Chautauqua
County Probate, Volume 4, pp. 210 – 211)
The last will and Testament of Edwin Edgerton of Dexterville County of Chautauqua and State of New York aged 60 years considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and the certainty of Death and being of sound mind (for which I am Thankful to God for) Tho of poor health I do make and publish my Last Will and testament in manner following Item 1st After my Decease and all of my just and lawful Debts are paid my devise and request is that Beloved wife Caroline shall have and own in her own right all of my household Furniture and goods of every description (excepting one Melodian and one sewing machine) and she is to have full power and right to use or dispose of all or any part of the same as she may see fit to do and further that my said wife Caroline have the full possession of and control for her own use and benefit the house Barn and out buildings and the lot which I bought of Nehemiah Herrick and which I now own and occupy in the sd village of Dexterville as long as she may see fit so to do and at any time she may see fit to direct my Executors hereinafter named to sell the same to the best advantage They can and out of the proceeds of such sale I do hereby give and bequeath unto her my said wife one Thousand Dollars $1000 which $1000 shall be in lieu of dower. Item 2nd I do hereby give and bequeath unto my Son Elon Edgerton the sum of one hundred Dollars over and above his equal share of the balance which may arise from the sale of my sd house and Lot as above described. Item 3rd I do hereby give and bequeath unto my Daughter Lorett a Melodian which we now have in our possession. Item 4th I do hereby give and bequeath unto my Daughter Elenor a sewing machine and the one we now have in use the above articles Melodian and Sewing Machine are in addition to the equal share in [----] the said Elenor and Lorette may have in the amount for which the said House and Lot may be sold for. Item 5th I do hereby nominate and appoint my wife Caroline and R.P. Edgerton my son as executors of this my last will and testament and do hereby authorize them at any time my said wife shall request to sell and dispose of all my said house and lot as above described and to make and Executors deed or conveyance to the purchaser thereof and first to pay my said wife Caroline the sum of One Thousand Dollars $1000, and the balance arising from such sale after deducting all expenses and paying to my said wife the one thousand Dollars and my said son Elon one hundred Dollars $100 the balance of my said estate to be equally divided between my sons Dolphus and Elon and my Daughters Elenor and Lorette Share and share alike. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand and seal this 13th day of July 1867. Edwin Edgerton The above Instrument consisting of one Sheet was executed by the Testator in our presence and we at his request and in his presence and in the presence of each other signed our names thereto as subscribing witnesses E.
