Edwin Edgerton died on August 8, 1867 at Dexterville, New
York. He was
buried at the Lewis Cemetery in Ellery
Township, New York.
Edwin left a Last Will and
Testament, dated at Dexterville,
New York on July 13, 1867. There is no record of when the will was proved, however, a copy of the will was recorded in
Chautauqua County Probate (Volume 4, pp. 210 – 211) on July 27, 1868 by H. O.
Sabin, Surrogate.
In the will, Edwin referred to himself as “of
Dexterville…aged 60 years”, and mentioned his “Beloved wife Caroline”, and
his four children – that is, “Son Elon Edgerton”, “Daughter Lorett”,
“Daughter Elenor”, and “R. P. Edgerton my son”. Edwin’s wife, Caroline, and his eldest son,
Rodulphus P, were named as executors.
The will was witnessed by E. T. King and Emery W. Fenton, both of
Dexterville.
Edwin’s widow, Caroline, survived him a number of
years. She resided for a time with her
eldest son, Rodolphus P. Edgerton, in Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania,
where she was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census. At the time of the 1880 Federal Census,
Caroline was living with her younger daughter, Loretta S. (Edgerton) Hill, in
Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. She was enumerated there in the household
of her son-in-law, Levi Hill (pg. 333), as “Caroline Edgerton, mother-in-law,
aged 64, born in New York, father born in Massachusetts and mother born in Vermont”.
Mrs. Caroline (Putnam) Edgerton died on May 10,
1881, probably at Jamestown,
New York. She was buried beside her husband at Lewis Cemetery
in Ellery Township,
New York.
