Apollos Cook Edgerton was born at Delhi, New York circa 1825, the son of Gurden H. and Hannah (Fischer) Edgerton.  He was raised in Delhi and resided there the entirety of his life.  He made his living as a hotelkeeper and farmer.  Apollos was an influential and respected member of the Delhi community.  He was an original officer and chief engineer of the Delhi Fire Department (established March 30, 1860);  served as a grand juror three years (in 1873, 1878 and 1880); and was for many years proprietor of the Edgerton House, built by his father, in the village of Delhi.

 

Apollos C. Edgerton was married at Delhi, New York on March 25, 1847 to Ann Eliza Flower, daughter of William and Currence (Judson) Flower.  The following notice of the marriage was published in the Delaware County Gazette on March 31, 1847:

 

“MARRIED... A. Cook Edgerton to Miss Ann Eliza Flower in this village 25th inst., by Rev. Geo. Waters, all of Delhi.”

 

Apollos and Ann had only one child:  a daughter Mary E., who died at the age of fourteen months.  The following notice of her death was published in the Delaware County Gazette on June 10, 1863:

 

“DIED... "Mary E. Edgerton, only daughter of A. C. Edgerton, Esq., in this village, Sat. morn last of diptheria, aged 17 months.”

Apollos Cook Edgerton died at Delhi, New York on May 12, 1882.  A notice of his death was printed in the Delaware County Gazette on Wednesday, May 17, 1882.  He left a Last Will and Testament, dated November 11, 1875, which was proved at Delhi, New York on June 14, 1882, before Isaac H. Maynard, Surrogate.  The will mentions Apollos’ “beloved wife Ann Eliza Edgerton” and three nieces, “Frances H. Maxwell, Isabella Horner and Augusta Horner”.
