Alanson Edgerton was born at Huntington, Vermont on December 3, 1813, the first son and eldest child of Daniel and Elizabeth (Ross) Edgerton.  He was raised in Huntington.  Upon his maturity, Alanson settled in nearby Charlotte and resided their for the entirety of his adult life.

 

Alanson Edgerton was married at Charlotte, Vermont on November 1, 1838 to Cordelia Palmer, daughter of James and Jerusha Palmer of Charlotte.  Cordelia was born at Charlotte on August 31, 1814.  Alanson and Cordelia had six children:  three sons, Henry Daniel, Harley Decatur and James A.; and three daughters, Louisa J., Mary Elizabeth and Imogene Jane.  Only two of the children (Harley and Imogene) survived to adulthood.

 

Alanson Edgerton made his living as a farmer and carpenter.  Circa 1882, he operated a cider mill in partnership with his son, Harley.  The following entry is found in the Gazetteer and Business Directory of Chittenden County, Vermont for 1882-83 (Hamilton Child, comp.; The Journal Office: Syracuse, New York; August 1882; pg. 167):

 

“Alanson Edgerton & Sons’ cider-mill, located on road 29, corner 35, is operated by horse-power, and turns out twenty barrels of cider per day, manufacturing about 700 barrels during a season.”

 

The following Charlotte Directory entries are found on pg. 264 of the same publication:

 

“EDGERTON ALANSON, (Charlotte)  r 29, (A Edgerton & Son)  contractor

EDGERTON HARLY D., (Charlotte)  r 29, (A Edgerton & Son)  fruit grower and farmer.

EDGERTON A. & SON, (Charlotte)  r 29, (Alanson and Harley D.)  fruit growers and farmers 40.”

 

The household of “Alex” Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Charlotte, Chittenden County, Vermont (pg. 69), with the following enumeration:

 

1 male “of 40 and under 50”  (father Daniel);

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (?);

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (Alanson);

1 male “of 10 and under 20”  (?); and,

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (wife Cordelia).

 

The household of Alanson Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Charlotte, Chittenden County, Vermont (pg. 87; dwelling #131; family #131; enum. Sept. 27, 1850).  The household consisted of:
