THE FRY'S, FREY'S, AND FRYE'S OF ROBERTSON AND SUMNER COUNTIES, TENNESSEE

I believe the lists shown below are incomplete but they are all that was contained in the 1820, 30, 40 and 50 Tennessee Index books at the Mormon Library in Santa Monica. I'm sure I have seen Frey's/Fry's in Sumner County in those periods. I'll check the NARA books at Laguna Niguel the next time I'm there unless someone wants to email their lists.

I'll use Fry as the universal name in the discussion presented below. The spellings contained in the censuses are shown as they are presented in the given census. I'll add a brief description of the given name of interest for all participants at the end of this web page.

I hope this is a good beginning. Let me know.

This web page is established as a focal point for a cooperative effort to identify the children by given name and age for all Fry's shown in the censuses displayed below. The 1850 Robertson County, TN census shows the household names as follows:

All spellings are Frey. There are no Fry spellings in the 1850 census.

Frey, Adam H. 40, Dorothy 37, Louisa 77, Cave J. 15, Mary 12, Malinda 9, Manerca 2, T T, Rb-780-188

Frey, G.W. 30, Sarah B. 19, Julia A. 1, T T Rb-1760-227

Frey, Henry 72, Catharine 66, John N.26, Willie F. 24, Catharine 21, William H. CHILDRESS 18, Martha A. 16, John B. 14, Lucy G. 11, John H. SHELTON 5, NC NC, Rb-1763-228

Frey, Henry S. 38, Nancy, Susan 10, Mary 8, Martha 8, Thomas 6, Henry C. 4, John 2, T VA, Rb-1761-227

Frey, James P. 33, James GAINES 65, Mary 75, Va Va, Rb-379-27

Frey, Martin P. 25, Thoriza 33, Henry 6, Mary 4, Nancy 2, Martha 10/12, T T, Rb -1481-256

Frey, Peter 57, Evaline 55, Fredonia 31, O.H.P. 29, Cerilda 27, Isabella 22, Elizabeth 20, Margaret 13, Jas. O. HUTCHESON 8, N.C. T, Rb-1066-131

Frey, Susan 60, Martha 30, John 26, Elizabeth 24, Sarah 22, Julias 20, Susan 18, NC T, Rb-860-160

Frey, Thomas 29, Jane 30, Wesley 7, Clinton 5, Cornelius 3, W. L. P. 1, T Va, Rb-140-65

Frey, Volantine 39, Martha 16, Matilda 39, James 15, Jasper 1`2, Mary 10, John 8, Catharine 5, Susan 2, T T, Rb-141-152

I've setup the following table to help in correlating the names.

The 1850 census show's the given names of the following heads of household:

Frey, Adam H. 40, Frey, G.W. 30, Frey, Henry 72, Frey, Henry S. 38, Frey, James P. 33, Frey, Martin P. 25, Frey, Peter 57,Frey, Susan 60,Frey, Thomas 29, Frey, Volantine 39,

The 1840 census show's the given names of the following Frey's : Adam H. Henry, Henry Sr., Jacob, John, Peter, Peter, Val

The 1830 census show's the given names of the following Frey's : John, Henry, John N., Peter, Peter, Peter Jr., Peter Sr.

The 1820 census show's the given names of the following Frey's : Bartlett, John, Joseph, Peter, Peter Sr., Robert, Jacob

I've attempted to correlate the given names in the 1820, 30, 40, and 50 censuses. Here's what I've concluded. Bartlett Fry disappears. Where is he? John Fry correlates in the 1820, 30, and 40 census's. He is not in the 1850 census. There is a John Fry in St Francis County, Mo. in the 1850 and 60 censuses. In 1850 he's in the household of Henry and Francis Barnes and is shown as age 70. In 1860 he is in the household of Mary Shannon wife of the deceased William Porter Shannon d 1859. They were married in TN. John is shown as age 82. The Peter's in the 1820 census seem to at least be related to the Peter's in the 1840 census. One of the two Peter's shown in the 1840 census is not shown in the 1850 census and two of the four Peters shown in the 1830 census are not shown in the 1840 census. Why? The two Peter's shown in the 1820 census correlate with two of the four Peter's shown in the 1830 census. I have not identified parental relationships for Henry S. 38, James P. 33, Martin 25, Susan 60, and Thomas 29 shown in the 1850 census. I have identified some marriages and have shown them at the end of this Page. The table presented below correlates the 1's and 0's shown in the 1840 census with the actual names shown in the 1850 census. The Frey Surnames are taken from the Index Book by Sistler at the LDS Library for the 1840 Robertson County Tennessee Census.
