This WEBPAGE presents Surnames taken from the 1790
census through the 1900 census taken from the index files of the NARA for
1) Virginia, 2) Tenn., and 3) St Genevieve, St Francis, and Madison Counties,
Missouri. The surnames shown above are included at this time as surnames
to be researched for this WEBPAGE. (others will be added as they are uncovered).
Most of the Lunsford photographs were provided
by J.R. Lunsford which he retrieved from a box of photographs belonging
to Aunt Ethyl Lunsford Francis. Aunt Ethyl is the daughter of Noah
Webster and Mary Ellen Bollinger Lunsford. She is a sister of my
grandfather Frank.
The following will give you a flavor of my research.
Nancy Ann Horton Fry (Frye, Frey), was born in Culpepper County, Va. ca 1809 and since the 1850 census shows the birth place of Barnet as Virginia, I assume Barnet was born in Culpeper County also.. Their parents migrated to Mitchellville, Robertson County, Tn. somewhere around 1818. They migrated to Mo. between 1848 and 1850 since the 1850 census shows them in St Francis County, Mo. and land records in Robertson County, Tn show that Barnet sold his 30 acres there in 1848. Barnet and Nancy died in St Genevieve County, Mo. Barnet died March 24, 1876 and Nancy died April 16, 1884.
Land records of Robertson County, Tn show that Barnet lived in Sumner County, Tn in 1840 when he bought 30 acres for $60.00 in Robertson County, Tn. He sold this land in 1848 for $60.00. James Horton was a witness on both land transactions. (James Horton is buried somewhere in Robertson County.) A Fry surname related to Barnet has not been uncovered in any of Barnet's transactions in Robertson and Sumner Counties Tn.
The 1850 census shows Barnet age 43 and Nancy Ann age 43 as husband and wife in St Francis County, Mo. with the following children. Charles age 19, James age 16, John age 12, Jacob age 11, Sarah Ann age 7, and Henry Peter age 5. I have found no record of Charles other than the foregoing. The others settled in either St Genevieve or St Francis Counties, Missouri. John lived to age 82 and is buried in the Genevieve Church cemetery just off highway 32 in St. Genevieve County, Mo. James is buried at the Salem Church Cemeterey just north of Farmington, Mo. Jacob served in the Union Army in the civil war and was killed in 1862 at the Battle of HainesBluff/Chickesaw Bayou, Mo. I have no record of his place of burial, but I do have his civil war record. Sarah Ann married Gideon Guittar Sept. 20 1860, however I have no record of their places of burial. Henry Peter b July 7, 1845 d Nov 9, 1924 married Drucilla Lucetta Chandler Fry b March 30, 1852 and died Feb 16, 1928. They are my great grandparents and were married Aug 15, 1869. Henry served in the Union Army along with his brother-in-law Gideon Guittar. They both fought in the Battle of Pilot Knob, Mo. Henry has documented this well in his Civil War record obtainable at the Supt. of Documents in Washington D.C.
Barnet bought, by patent, 320 acres in St Genevieve County near Sprott and Jonca in 1854 (recorded in 1857 due to government backlog) and moved from St Francis County to St Genevieve County. He shows up in St Genevieve County in the 1860 census. In the late 1860's, he divided his land equally between James, John, Sarah Ann, and Henry Peter.
It appears, from the 1870 census, that Barnet and Nancy lived next to their daughter Sarah Ann and her husband Gideon Guittar so I assume there were 2 dwellings on the 80 acres he passed to Sarah Ann and Gideon. A Guittar child is seen in Barnet's and Nancy's household in the 1870 census and Nancy is seen in the Guittar household in 1880 census following Barnet's passing.. I also assume that Barnet and Nancy are buried in a grave site on that farm although Ruth Basler suspects they are buried at the Mackley Cemetery at Sprott..
As stated above, Henry Peter married Drucilla Lucetta Chandler in 1869. The Chandler geneology is well documented to England to 1450 and is presented below. Henry and Lucetta (apparently she dropped the Drucilla) are easily identified with relatively new headstones, placed there by by my father Henry, in the Memorial Cemetery at Doe Run.
One added point - The 1810 Culpepper County, Va.census shows a John Fry with 2 male children under 10. This may be Barnet's father. In addition there are several Fry's in Madison County, Va. Madison County was formed from Culpepper County in 1793. I have not been able to connect the John Fry of Culpepper County with any of the Fry's of Madison County even though I believe there is a connection. He is the only Fry in the Madison County and Culpeper County census's of 1810 that I have been unable to connect to anyone including the Madison County Fry's..
An observation - There are 3 Fry's shown in St Francis County in the 1850 census. They are all located in Big RiverMills. They are 1) Henry Fry age 95, 2) John Fry age 72, and 3) Barnet Fry age 41/43 in Big River Mills in 1850. Are they related? Big River Mills was apparently the focal point for the community in 1850. It is now identifiable by "The Little Red Schoolhouse" 150 yards from the Red Cedar Lodge on 67 and on the old 67 between Desloge and BonneTerre. See Fry below for a chronological presentation, by generation,of the surname Fry.
