Arrived Hopkins County on Christmas Day  1846

“William Buchanan and his wife Mary Ann Gentry arrived in Hopkins County, Kentucky on Christmas Day 1846.” William Buchanan had been born in Cumberland County, PA. He married in Person County, North Carolina in 1799 and when he and his wife moved to Kentucky they had five children all born in Person County, North Carolina. The Heritage of Hopkins County, Kentucky 1806 – 1988, page 65.

Cox Before 1818 Temperance Bailey Cox, born in Person Co. NC 18 Oct 1803, died 31 Dec. 1875 in hopkins Co. Ky. Married to William D. Tompkins, 1 June 1818 in Hopkins Co. Ky. Her Father was Samuel Cox, born 1753 died 1820 in Hopkins Co. Ky.  Mother Temperance was born in Henrico Co., Virginia 16 Dec. 1761, died 1823 in Hopkins Co., Ky. A. G. Brown fall of 1850 A first person account -- Excerpts from a bio of A. G. Brown from notes taken by his granddaughter before his death in 1929

"My father died in the fall before I came to Kentucky with my brother, mother, and sister.  My father's name was William Brown.  I was born twelve miles from Hillsboro, Orange County on June 3,1836.  I came to Kentucky in the fall of 1850 in company with my mother, Mary Morrison Cummins Brown; and my sister, Margaret Jane Brown, who afterward married Chester Dossett who came out here at the same time; and brother Robert Brown who was older than I.  Brother John came with us to Tennessee, and stayed there until the next fall, then came to Poole, Kentucky where he located first. Brother Dave Brown came one year before I did and married Mary Thornsberrie, Russell's daughter,the next year after I came. ..."

Vincent Tapp 1833 Vincent Tapp, a native of Person County, N.C., was born in 1825, and removed with his parents, in 1833, to Hopkins County, Ky., where he died in 1865. He was a merchant and farmer. He was the son of Eli Tapp, who was born in North Carolina in 1797, and died in 1852. STEPHEN R. HORNER   STEPHEN R. HORNER, Webster County, was born in Orange County, N.C., February 13, 1838.  In 1857 he began serving a three-years' apprenticship to the harness-making trade, and afterward continued that business and farming in his native State until 1867. He then came to Webster County, Ky. He was appointed postmaster at Sebree in 1877, and still retains that position. He was married, in 1866, to Miss Martha J. JAMES HENRY QUALLS 1858 SQUIRE JAMES HENRY QUALLS was born April 2, 1836, in Granville County, N.C., and in 1858, came to Webster County Ky., where he has since resided. His father, James Qualls, a native of North Carolina, was born in 1810, and died at this place in 1872.

James Carnal 1830 - 1840 James Carnal, born NC ca 1800/1801; died July 1874 Hopkins County, KY. (source: Hopkins County, KY Vital Statistics Deaths, 1874, page 1, microfilm) He married Lucy Wood 11 Jan 1818 Granville County, NC (source: Marriages of Granville County, NC 1753-1868 by Brent Holcomb, Gen. Pub. Co., 1981). Bondsman for the marriage was Wm. Terry.

James Carnal is found on the 1830 Granville County, NC census index.

James Carnal does not appear in Hopkins County until 1840, when he shows up on the Hopkins County census and tax list. He continues to appear on the tax lists through at least 1849. The 1841 Hopkins County tax lists shows him with no land and 4 children between the ages of 7 and 17. He also appears on the 1850 Hopkins County census and then appears on the 1860 Webster County census. The 1870 Webster County census shows him in Vandersburg Dist.

Information about the formation of the four Kentucky counties of interest here should be helpful in understanding the migration from Person County. More importantly, an understanding of the dates of the formation of these counties is necessary in order to know where to look for county records.
