Daughter Etta, who started as a postal clerk from High School, was ultimately post-mistress at the USPO, Houlton ME during the 1930's. After she retired she m: on 13 Sept 1942, John E Doherty. (John 1880-1954, was a local farmer; the m: was short lived, as John d: of a heart attack while on a shopping trip to Woodstock NB.) Etta, a close friend of her 1st cousin, Martha Anne (Haggerty) Costello, d: 27 December 1974, 94 years old, interred: Evergreen Cem, Catholic Section, Houlton ME.

John Smith, as a widower, remarried and had a son, Herbert who was first an Aroostook Co farmer, then migrated to Wrentham MA, with a 1938 hurricane "clean-up crew", settled in Wrentham MA w/ wife Marguerite (Petersen, from NS). Herbert managed the Dairy Dept at the Wrentham State School. Both are interred, together, in the Wrentham MA cemetary, the headstone reads: SMITH.. .Herbert J 1898-1964.... Marguerite 1902-1995.

Worked for the Chalmers family in Houlton prior to her m: (1880 USA Census).... met/m: Charles when she was attending his sick mother during her declining years.... others have said:.... " a charmer".... "great cook".... "loved to entertain".... "had great partys when the girls (her dau's) came home to visit".... "the teachers all stayed at the Haggertys, it was fun".... managed farm w/sons after Charles demise/death.... visited 1928 USA presidential nominee, Al Smith, in Albany NY, as well, she met & chatted with the then Mayor of NYC, Jimmy Walker o/s St Patrick's Cathedral, NYC.... obit: "cheerful in adversity and upheld by an ardent faith, she was an interesting companion whose memory will be cherished by a large circle of friends" |PIX: Louisa & Hannah Laverty as young ladies|
