Labor Union Organizer & Laborers Union Business Agent or whatever, his laborer union members thought he was great for he continually got them on-site pay raises by threatening work-site "shut downs" >>>> has had, at least, 1001 different employers through the years >>>> USArmy/Europe/WW2, combat infantryman, cook, M1 rifleman; received his last military uniform at Ft Devens MA, 1946, where his brother Ed, in the same clothing line, received his first >>>> fancied himself a drum player as a kid, took lessons at school; would hammer the damn thing day & night, he finally outgrew the calling >>>> attended Thomas A Edison Junior High School, and thats all: at one time, at the junior high school, he absconded with some cafeteria lunch tickets for which his mother tanned his ass, he could'nt sit for three days; was frequently diciplined by school authorities, via the "rattan", for one infraction or another ; never finished school >>>> worked on the Donovan farm in Houlton for one season, not his style >>>> was a known frequenter of the Black Water Tavern, in North Quincy which in later years became his mail drop, the Brighton Tap, in Brighton & the Bracket Roof, in Oak Square >>>> retires/resides/lounges, Braintree MA (the home of John Adams & John Quincy Adams) >>>> his life resembled, somewhat, his brother Dan's early stage role as Yishmael, the father of the Arabs, who according to the bible was "a wild ass of a man, his hand against all, hand of all against him".>>>. his philosphy as he aged was quite simple: "when I wake up in the morning, I realize I've made it to another day, so I go out & have a few pops" (presumably to celebrate) >>>> cat's, dog's & marital status ??? EDWARD DANIEL COSTELLO:(m: Evelyn Brigitta Rompza)

Pioneer aviator Charles A Lindbergh, known as "Lucky Lindy" was a national hero for his lonely & historic air flight in a "putt putt" air plane called the "Spirit of Saint Louis" from NY to Paris, 1927; he later lost a son, murdered, to a kidnapper & later still, even though he had had a distinguished WW2 air combat record as a civilian designer/consultant working for Boeing Aircraft, he fell out of grace with the Democrat Roosevelt presidental administration during WW2 over his earlier advocation of some Nazi fascist policy. It was later discovered well after his death that he had fathered a 2nd family & possibly a 3rd family located in Germany &/or Switzerland >>>> somewhere along the way here, 1934, the Dionne quintuplet kids who were celebrated world-wide arrived, via a standard birthing, at the family farm in Ontario Canada; prior to that time, nobody had ever heard of the word quintuplet or Dionne >>>> Huey "Kingfish" Long the powerful Louisana political populist & US Senator with presidential aspirations was assassinated, 1935. >>>> about this time, 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated Englands throne in favor of a marriage with divorced American commoner, Wallis Warfield Simpson; they said it was love but he was kicked out of the Royal Family anyway >>>> The Spanish Civil War, 1936-39, was settled by the Nationalist (read: fascist dictators) against the Republican's (read "commies") with much slaughter on all sides; Germany & Italy were the supporting fascist dictators while Russia supplied the "commies". >>>> Amelia Earhart, 1937, the American aviatrix was lost along with her navigator, with no recovery, in the Pacific Ocean during an around the world "first-women-to" air flight; she had had a number of previous world wide aviation successes. >>>> In 1940 Mexico, Leon Trotsky, the foremost Russian Communist theotician/murderer of his time was murdered himself by a Communist apparachik with a pick-axe; his murderer was released from jail some years later.>>>> All of this time during the 1930's & early 1940's, the USA & much of the remainder of the world was suffering from a deep economic depression; the unemployment rate was well above 25% (depending on who formulated the rate), many people had nothing, others survived at very low wages (WPA: $7/wk) on the WPA (Works Progress Administration whose employees worked in urban areas fixing, building roads, street potholes & other "make work" projects etc) or the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp who did much of the same in rural areas); there was little Undertaking business for the Costello's, then, & Mother, luckily, was able to return to the Nursing profession. >>>>
My first job, 1938, as a kid, was working for brother Dick selling newspapers, earned 50 cents a week, Dick was best friend & mentor during this period; he introduced me to some of the elegance of life, like ice-cream & lobster; also earned "greenies" & "brownies" selling magazines to neighbors; once had the experience of selling Father Coughlan's famous/infamous "Social Justice" publication (that is, confusing to the "Liberals", although he was an "avowed" on social issues; he was also an avowed anti-semitic; the RCChurch got rid of him, belatedly); additionally sold rags, bottles, scrap metal to "junkies"; a 'junkie', then, was the working guy atop his horse & wagon who continually scoured neighbordhoods seeking the discards of others, junk, for cash, good profit for all, "trash for cash". >>>> Attended the 1939 Worlds Fair in NYC where I witnessed a performance, with said attendant mother, of a Sally Rand fan dance, both with & without her fans >>>> 1942, unloaded lumber from freight cars at the Fuller Lumber Co, earned $25/wk >>>> once had dancing lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Academy, they didnt stick very well >>>> met Cardinal O'Connell, Boston's, then, Cardinal/Archbishop while tromping across his residential property on Lake St Brighton enroute to a "camping" at Hammonds Woods; he was very affable & genuinely interested in our camping foray; I did'nt understand, then, why continually promenading clerics kneeled to kiss his ring; later, I caught much "noise" from mother for referring to him as "Big Bill O'Connell" >>>> as a kid during the 1930's, swimming in the Charles River was a usual summer exercise, today, 2000, it would be deadly with the water pollution etc; witnessed, then, a Charles River swimming mishap where 'Red' Smith, a local kid, save the life of 'Buddy' Foley, another local kid, who inadvertantly got into water over his head, 'Red' pulled him out to safety >>>>; not much of an athlete then, played a little sand-lot football as a right tackle with the 'Skins' in competition with the River-Rats, Barn-Rats & the Eagles/Eaglets; in baseball, was totally unsucessful at catching the ball; in ice sports, couldnt stand up on ice skates; somehow I was born without the athletic gene (once at Hammond's Pond, observed the, then, MA Govenor, Leverett Saltenstahl ice skating, his favorite sport). An autumn's Saturday afternoon pleasure would be to climb the Boston College football Fitton Field fence for free & watch the Boston College big boys, who were seeking national football status, thump the St Anselm's little guys by a score of 70 or 80 to nothing; this was Frank Leahey's first football Head Coaching job prior to leading Notre Dame football to high levels >>>> Also, along about this time the Boston Bee's baseball team became the the Boston Braves, thanks to some wealthy Italian building contractors; the team played at Braves field now GWTW as part of Boston Univ. They later moved on to become the Millwakee Braves & then the Atlanta Braves. >>>> Sometime during this period, early 40's my friends & I were introduced as spectators to the world of professional wrestling exhibition, it was great fun & entertainment; we viewed the likes of Steve (Crusher) Casey with his "Irish Flip" which consisted of grasping his opposite by an arm & a leg, & then flinging him out into the audence, (Dr) John (Dropkick) Murphy who happened "on the side" to maintain a "dry-out" farm for alcoholics, (Sliding Bill) Hansen; he had a physical back sliding/crawling technique by which he could evade hard chargeing opponents, Ed (Strangler) Lewis who strangled opponents by the neck etc. Nobody was really hurt by all of this mayhem, It was all "staged". >>>> Cinema fare, 1930's, was offered by the Egyption Theatre in Brighton. It consisted of "Hoss Opera" stuff with Tom Mix & Hopalong Cassidy as well as dramatic stuff like "Gunga Din" & "The Crusader's &, maybe, a Shirley Temple pix. >>>> During the early 1940's, President Roosevelt ran for an unprecedented '4th term' (1944) & was elected to the USA Presidents office; as he was quite ill at the time, he dident survive & was suceeded by Vice President Harry Truman. Also during this period the USA experienced national 'sitdown' strikes by the UAW members, that is, those auto workers seeking recognition as a legal entity as well as higher wages; there were also 'jitterbugging' & 'zoot suiter' issues permeating the National scene, then.
Graduated BriHiSchool June 1945... PIX: Diploma: BHS >>>> ; entered Northeastern Univ 3 days later. While attending the freshman orientation session, we were continually lectured & it was emphasized on the need to frequently change ones "linens"; little did I know then that the lecturer was referring to my underwear; he also gave us that old "GI" "saw" that of the 3 people, that is, you & the party's on either side of you, only one of you would graduate with the original class; he was right, I was drafted into the USArmy after one year in school. >>>>being included in the last conscription (draft) of WW2: on draft day, April 1946, draftee's were grouped together at Brighton Courthouse, placed on a trolley-car to Ft Banks in Winthrop MA, bunked overnight, entrained to Ft Devens MA the next day for a first days experience in the USArmy; it was there that I first learned about the "MF" word, something that I had never encountered before, (after living for 18 years in Brighton); met brother Tom, just returned from USArmy combat infantryman duty, ETO, in the clothing line, I was receiving my first army uniform, he, his last; we later, that night, partook of that great GI elixir, 3.2/Beer. >>>> after infantry basic training at Ft McClelland in AL, I shipped on the General Altman, an USArmy transport, to Tokyo Japan to the 8th Army Hq; on board ship where everybody everywhere suffered from the "re-girgies" making it impossible to partake in a regular meal , I subsisted on candy bars >>>> served (clerked) in the Army of Occupation, Japan, as a motor pool dispatcher sergeant during 1946-1947; not a great experience, they asked me to re-enlist, but I respectfully declined; returned home via Ft Lewis WA on another General Ship & candy bar meals >>>> after being "drafted" originally, I signed up for the regular USArmy which provided my "GI Bill" education benifits >>>> re-entered/earned BS/Northeastern Univ (GI bill:$400/year tuition+books+$50/mon subsistence allowance) >>>>
Under Northeasterns work co-op plan, had work assignments at FstNatlBankBos, (a commercial bank), stuffing cancelled checks into IBM check sorting machines, Carter's Ink (a manufacturer of office supplies), entering, in long hand, accounting transactions into the books i.e. debits on the "window side", credits on the wall/clock side & Dickey-Raymond, (a direct mail advertiseing company) more of the same; somewhat supprisingly, 1950, Dickie-Raymond employed many women, a woman manager purchased all of the printing & 2 other women managed production departments which were all staffed by women & many of the copy-writers were women >>>> worked cheaply, father cautioned me about the prohibitions of wearing braces & chewing gum in the office >>>>during college, we had our Junior Prom at the Hotel Bradford & our Senior Prom at the Somerset Hotel >>>> ran for the senior class treasurers office, picked up a few votes >>>> graduated 1951 with a BS/BA, ... PIX: Degree: Northeastern Univ >>>> during this period, spent my bachelor summers on Cape Cod MA, otherwise known as the Irish Riveria; once viewed Mae West of "its not the men in my life that counts, its the life in my men" fame in a "follies" show >>>> attended, after Northeastern Univ, (working on a Masters): NYU, Hunter Col, Syracuse U, Duke Univ & NCSU >>>>
Early schooling was at the Bennett / Winship School where Ms Barry was the Principal, nice old lady; Kindergarden was supervised by a Mrs Hill; we all, including Mrs Hill, after working very hard at "playing", napped on pallets in the afternoon, (She was widowed but kept her job since her husband had passed, otherwise as a married women she could'nt work in the, then, 1932, Boston School System); >>>> 1st grade taught by a Ms Crowley, who proved to be a screamer/yell'er, & a chin pincher who slammed her wooden pointer all around to make her point; once, along the way, a substitute teacher tried to explain/warn us of the evils & practise of chewing gum; the gum ingriedents, she said, were too "horrible" to describe, thus we did'nt learn what they were; to this day, I'm still ignorant of the horrows of chewing gum ingredients >>>> 2nd grade, tought by Ms Love, learned to read, earned a special award along with Mary DeYoung, a fellow class-mate, as the only indivuals who grasped the subject successfully, we were allowd to sit aside the class with coloring & comic books while all of the others, including the teacher, had to drudge/grudge through the reading lesson again; under the Boston schools then multicutural policy, we would sing folk tunes for the Scots ("Oh, Where-Tell-Me Where Has My Highland Laddie Gone") , English ("My Country tis of Thee") & Italians ("Santa Luchia, SanTAH LuchiAH"), but none for the Irish or Irish decendents who comprised 75% of the local population; >>>> 3rd, taught by Ms Toomey, learned the math tables, her sister taught the "special " kids (read "dummies"); >>>> 4th grade, Ms Sanderson taught us about the Civil (or a'civil) War; (witnessed in 1937, the passage thru/over Brighton of the Graf Spee Hindenburg dirigible on its way from Berlin Germany to Lake Hurst NJ & disaster, also witnessed, via radio, the KO of James J Braddock by Joe Lewis, the new world Heavyweight Boxing Champ); >>>> 5th, Ms Cronin introduced us to intensive reading & art, she insisted that "Notrah""Dahme", the font of much art, was in Paris France, but we all knew that it was a college football power located in Southbend IN USA & was pronounced "Noter Daim"; (once was chastised for bringing a fish knife to school, but she did'nt tell the parents; I also overfed her pet fish which killed them, much to her chargrin) >>>> 6th, introduced to "woodworking", made a mahogany end-table; Ms Murphy taught us history & geography; Mr Cuny, during recess, played base/stickball with the kids; served on the Safety Patrol, Mr Cuny taught us to control auto traffic with various hand signals & with no remuneration, its now a Civil Service job; (survived the 1938 hurricane quite well, although it blew away half of MA) >>>>
Then on to the Thomas Alva Edison Junior High School, 1939-1942, >>>> PIX: Diploma: TAE >>>> where Mr Gammon was the Principal (likable old guy) & where "Honey Fitz (JFK father-in-law), "Hum&Strum", radio entertainers & pals regailed us with entertaining Irish, current & political tunes; also, had a functioning Truant Officer, Mr Murphy; if he caught you on the public streets during school hours, that was it, you were taken directly to your parents for ajudication; Corporal Punishment was also standard policy, behavorial violators were given the switch across the hand by a male teacher with a witness; 5 strokes on each hand was quite common, I'm told; Truant Officers & Corporal Punishment disappeared at HS level >>>> 7th grade was with Ms O'Connor, I'm not sure what she was trying to teach, although, one time, a decree came from the School Committee on high to teach some "economics" to the students. Her response, after a number of hurried & harried consultations with fellow teachers was to lecture that "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" which she continued to repeat for a full hour. That was it. "Economics teaching" disappeared shortly thereafter; during this period, I had learned to feign a cough that would make my lungs whistle, to which I demonstrated to the school Music teacher whos eyes would grow to the size of golf balls thinking, unknowingly, that I was inflicted with something worse than TB; >>>> 8th & 9th was with Mr Cleary who taught math & science, a good guy & teacher; he was of the opinion & lectured that cigarette smoking would stunt ones growth, never proven. As part of my Mechanic Arts curriculum, I made a "Porky Pig" lamp. >>>> Military Drill was part of the middle/HS curriculum, then, probably unheard of now, 2006; it culminated into a city-wide all schools massive June parade in downtown Boston. >>>> Much to the chargrin of the local teaching hierarchy at the TAE school, we elected a female class president, a Ms Ruth Gannon I believe, that is, after they tried to coerce us, the electorate student body, into accepting a sissy-boy into the office >>>> The Pearl Harbor bombing/WW2 start, 7 December 1941, happened during a Sunday afternoon {Boston time} this year, 1941, & like all good Catholic kids, then, I was at the local cinema, the Egyptian Theatre, cost: 10 cents, for which one received an 'A' pix, a 'B' pix & a cartoon, a large MrGoodBar candy bar cost a nickel (5 cents); word of the bombing spread very rapidly throughout the theatre, everybody quickly returned home. >>>> then the war years with a full wartime economy followed: including food rationing, gas rationing, war & victory gardens, defense, war & victory stamps/bonds, war service conscription for the European & Pacific war theatres. During "D-Day", a key wartime military event, 6 June 1944, when the Allied Powers armies invaded the coast of France, the mood in the USA was very somber; people stayed home & the radios continually blared somber frontline reports & martial music was played over the radios all day. Fifteen million men were in the armed service during this period & all of the women entered the workforce doing everything & working everywhere including the armed service. During 1945, President Roosevelt died & was suceeded by Harry Trueman. Finally Victory-Europe (VE Day)& Victory-Japan Day (VJ Day), 1945, arrived. VE, was preceded by much publication & fanfare. In Boston, during VE Day, everybody surged to center city to celebrate; trolley cars stopped running as a crowd control measure. On VJ Day, celebrations were much muted.
Then on to BriHiSch, 1942-1945, which I do'nt remember too much about, I think it was largely a custodial operation, unfortunately, which means it was a "bust"; during the 1930's & 40's in the Boston School system there were 3 levels of schools & applicaple policy:... (Level 1:) The elite/magnet schools such as Boston English, Boston Latin, Boston Tech & Boston Commercial, all of which were centrally located in/near downtown Boston & whose entry required a recommendation from the district school in the outlying & an entrance exam .... (Level 2:) College course applicants located at the outlying district schools and (Level 3:) Commercial course applicants etal located at the outlying district schools; obviously, the elite schools & the college applicants at the district level were staffed by the best talented teachers & had the best facilities while the commercial course applicants etal were largely ignored & deficient of teaching resources, thus, the "pass-thru" policy which meant that all one had to do to graduate was to showup, not a good situation. >>>> The Principal was Mr Joseph Leary whose claim to fame, other than his WW1 army officer soldiering experience, was to change the name of the HS student publication from "The IMP" which was characterized by a cartoonish pixie like figure to "The Brighton Heights"; it seems the title "The IMP" & its comical rendition were undignified >>>> while there, once violated the school no smoking regulation, was duly "detentioned" for several hours, threatened with ouster;
After Northeastern Univ, graduated 1951, employed with: AT&T/WE, (auditor), lived in a cockroach ridden flat on the "west side" NYC at 312 W70th St, owned by a "gay" landlord, with Al Crawford; this was my first sojourn to NYC, after which I returned to Boston for a bronchiectasis operation (partial lung removal)(sister Peg negotiated the price with the "medics", she was very skillful at this). The chronic bronchitis condition was obtained from Bostons cold winters, "cigarette smoking" from age 12 to 23 years plus "weak" lungs inherited from my Costello forbears (a doctor at BosCtyHosp once told me that I had an "old mans lung")
Then on to GT&E/Sylvania, my 2nd sojourn into NYC where I learned to "cue-up" for public tranportation entry (subways & busses) & futher learned that lunch was at noon & dinner was at "eight". Ordinary indivual personal transactions for goods/services were settled largely with personal checks; In Boston, a cash economy, it seems, one paid in cash for all services/goods rendered & one had dinner at noon & supper at six. (With my $65/wk salary as an accountant/auditor, I was able to afford a new 1952 Ford automobile, cost: $2100, a NYC apt w/2 other guys, a well stocked liquor cabinet & good clothes); (As an aside, we use to shop for clothes on Sundays on Canal St in lower Manhattan where all of the Jewish merchants had shops open & available for Sunday business; one could buy a summer suit for $5 that would last the season). Also attended opera once-in-awhile, although not a full-time pursuit; saw "Carmen" w/Rise Stevens & a few others; the old opera house, then, was located mid-town; tickets cost <2$; for this amount of money one gained access to the upper,upper,upper balcony which was about six stories above the stage, viewing was not-so-good but hearing was ok. Also saw many of the Bway shows, including the original "South Pacific" & "The King & I" etc. After a short stay living in Flushing NY, where sister Louise was dispatched by mother to inspect my living mode which passed inspection, then moved to a more fashionable part of NYC's "upper east side" with Alden Crawford (who subsequently married neighbor Phyllis Ingalls). Jim Mulrooney filled the Crawford slot post Crawford/Ingalls nuptials; (Jim subsequently married Ginny Burke) along with Bob Crowley (who subsequently married Anne Connell) at 50 E80th St, a 5 floor walk-up which meant that one only ascended/decended when absolutely necessary because of the stressful climb. This location had less roach's & more cocktail parties than some previous places. Dry martinis were the rage then, the dryer the better; on one occasion visited Coney Island for beaching/sunning, it was shocking in a sense, there was no place to sit/lay down, it was populated wall-to-wall with people standing up, a case of finite space occupied by an expanding population (1953); also lived, under the sponsorship of GTE/Sylvania performing auditing tasks, in exotic Buffalo NY & Syracuse NY; sojourned in Mexico for a year or so working on Sylvania Company problems; managed to get back to NYC with my sanity & without the "touristas". I discovered along the way that the key to avoiding the "tourista's" was to drink beer, not the water >>>>
Completed my business career with IBM, it took 30 more years, from 1961 to 1991 (finance, business management >>>> once introduced the use of the slide-rule into the pricing computations process, ((an innovation, learned in HS, not well received by the "old dogs" for it would compete with the, then, monster mechanical Monroe-Matic with its ability to compute to 10 places to the right of the decimal point, a worthy function, no doubt))); under IBM's "No Alcohol Policy" worker types had to travel many blocks for an "after work" libation & to avoid the "eyes" of management; years later, in liberal fashion, the marketing types were allowd cocktails w/customers at lunch, but could'nt return to the office til the next day; also under their "Non-Fraternization, We're A Family Company" policy Managers could not "date" or socialize with their female secretary's under pangs of employeement termination, no matter what she may have looked like >>>> had work opportunities in Italy, Austria & Japan, all declined & lived in Scarsdale NY in a preferred "rent controlled" apt ($100/mon w/garage) which was obtained by "tipping" the manager; married Evelyn Brigitta Rompza whom I had met at a Berkshires singles resort, (after a visit to 'Tiffany's' where we chose & purchased the wedding ring); moved to Raleigh NC under the sponsorship of said IBM company where the azaleas, forsythia & dogwoods bloom early each long spring & the crepe myrtle like-wise for many weeks during July/August/September; built a home which Evelyn has modified to a point that it is unrecognizable from the original, but for the better; owned & operated 4 "Volksvagen Bugs", consecutively, that is, they had the lowest cost/mile of them all. >>>> golf's: 23 handicap, in later years, 2005, moved to the red tee's in order to better compete with Evelyn; Hole-In-One: 20 November 1998, 12th hole, 145 yards, 6 iron, at the Wildwood Golf Course, Raleigh NC, witness: Evelyn Costello & Howard & Joan Buesing, after 40 years of trying >>>> pot's for fun, mostly sculptural & handbuilt stuff >>>> Pix: Ceramic Stuff >>>> works the family tree, as you can see >>>> thru the years have tried, in government office elections, to vote independent/conservative; starting in 1952, min. voting age: 21 years, voted for Eisenhower, Nixon (lost to JFK), LBJ (should've voted Goldwater>, Nixon, Carter (big mistake), Reagan, Bush Sr, Bush Jr & McCain (lost to O'Bama) >>>> had e-coli infection, 2001, hospitalized for 2 days, has atrial fibrillation (arrhythmic heart, if that explains anything) which is maneageable, 2005; 2006, had a leg squamous growth etal, which were excised >>>> retains old kitchen breadknife & shoebrush from the 344 Market St residence >>>> no kid's >>>> many cat's: Simon, Shuster, Tilly, Tilly II, Samantha, Semas, Molly, Abby/Spud (1998) & Elsa/Mutt (1998) Sadie >>>> no dog's >>>>although not Lutheran (but continued to claim to be "unaffiliated" with respect to Religous/Church affiliation), inhumation arrangements along with Evelyn who is Lutheran are with: Holy Trinity Lutheran Ch, Raleigh NC >>>> BTW, I stand 6'1" tall; with an erect carriage (2006) at 155 lbs & have hazel eyes. Now, 2008, I've slipped to a flabby 160lbs & it wont move.
