There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die.
David Wild died on January 30, 2006, at home in Olympia, WA at the age of 83. He was born to Fred and Edna (Harris) Wild on September 4, 1922, in Springville, Iowa. He graduated from Hamilton High School in Culver City, CA and attended Iowa State College for two years where he studied to become a veterinarian.
Due to WW II, plans changed and David was drafted in the Navy in 1942. After surgical technician training at Long Beach Naval Hospital in CA, he served aboard the USS Hollandia as a pharmacist’s mate. He toured Asia and the Pacific. While stationed in Bremerton, WA he met Barbara “Babs” Eckroat. After his discharge in 1945, they were married in Bremerton and together they raised their five children in Washington and Oregon. David had a successful career as an insurance underwriter. He worked for MetLife for 30 years and held various management positions in the Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia areas before transferring to Salem, OR in 1971. The Wilds lived in Keizer, OR from 1972 to 1985 and were members of St. Edward Catholic Church. In 1985 the retired couple moved back to Olympia. Dave’s beloved wife, Babs, preceded him in death this summer on August 9, 2005. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on February 16, 2006.
Dave was most proud of his children and grandchildren and always put his family first. He delighted in telling jokes and writing poetry. He will be remembered for his unfailing sense of humor. Always the “doer,” Dave had a true servant’s heart. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lacey, WA, as well as the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society and St. Placid Booster Club.
In addition to his wife, Dave was preceded in death by his brother, Caryll Wild, a grandson, Christopher and great-grandson, Joshua. He is survived by his children: Kathleen and Alan Martin (Olympia), David J. and Becky Wild (Olympia), Mary and Chuck Lucas (Salem), Brian and Claudia Wild (Gig Harbor, WA) and Robert and Tammy Wild (Keizer, OR), nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, February 6, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lacey, with a luncheon reception to follow. A private gravesite service will be held in Bremerton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in David’s name to Thurston Co. Medic 1 or to Providence St. Peter Foundation, Olympia, WA.
