BUCKLEY-McCARTY in Bucksport, Maine
Our family has a rich heritage in the town of Bucksport (Hancock County), Maine.
Following are places of interest and photos from the beloved port city.

The patriarch of our family, Dennis BUCKLEY, came from Ireland as did his wife. Dennis & Catherine McCARTY were married in Bucksport on October 24, 1864. They raised their family in this town and both are buried here as well.
There are many unanswered questions still to be discovered about our family. When did they arrive from Ireland? Did other family members come with them? What was Dennis Buckley's occupation (census records "laborer"). Where were they married? Are there photos of Dennis and Catherine out there?

Members
of the 6th Corps, the 6th Maine served in reserve at Gettysburg. Numbering
nearly 450 men, the unit was commanded by Col. Hiram Burnham (1813-1864).
Burnham was later promoted to general and was killed at the battle of Chaffin’s
Farm in September 1864.
The regiment was raised from the counties of Hancock, Penobscot, Piscatquis, and Washington. The 6th Maine suffered no losses at Gettysburg. Their monument is located with the rest of the Brigade on Howe Avenue. The monument is a rather simple reddish colored stone die that’s main feature is the Sixth Corps famous Greek Cross at the top.

6th Maine....fact..."This distinguished regiment is included as one of William F. Fox's (circa 1889) top 300 Union Fighting Regiments."
6th Maine, "The Sixth Maine Volunteer Infantry: No Rich Men's Sons," by James Mundy. The 6th Maine engaged in more hand-to-hand encounters and suffered higher casualty rates that the more famous Maine units, such as the 2nd Maine and Joshua L. Chamberlain's 20th Maine. The greatest hardship inflicted on the reader is the book's cost. Forty dollars for 221 pages of text (including the roster) seems excessive. This is unfortunate. Despite its few drawbacks, Mr. Mundy succeeded in his intention to produce a eulogy to the 6th Maine that demonstrates "that these long forgotten men deserve to be remembered. (Partial review by Gary Ecelbarger). 275 pages includes photos, and roster. Cost $ 40.00.
The BUCKLEY home still stands on what is now called Buckley Lane off of Franklin Street in Bucksport.
Daughter Kathleen Buckley was a school teacher and taught for many years at the Luman Warren School.
