The date assigned to this photograph is based on several factors. First, the cabinet card
format and style (thick beige stock), and the subjects' clothing, narrows the range
of possible dates down to the 1880s to 1890s. Second, the elaborate
backdrop is typical of photographers' backdrops in the 1890s, narrowing down
the possible date to a single decade. Third, the subjects' formal clothing implies
that the photograph was taken for an important event such as their wedding (1894),
which falls into this date range. Fourth, this couple appears to
have posed for very few pictures during their youth (I have only seen one other
besides this), again suggesting that the event captured was very
important. Taken together, the evidence supports the conclusion
that this was their wedding picture, taken circa 2 December 1894.
