James Clark Roberts was was born in Pickens Dist[rict], S.C. March 1, 183[3.] He first entered service as a private on Aug 1862 at Pickens Dis S.C. in the 4[th] So Carolina Cal[vary] Co C and continued until paroled 1865 [was mustered into the Company B, 10th Battalion S.C. Calvary, which later became a part of the 4th Calvary Regiment]. He was wounded in Battle of the Crater at Petersburg [where he] lost fingers and/or part of [his] hand by mini ball. He was captured Dec 1, 1864 and remained in prison at Rock Island, Ill until July 1965. While there he helped build stone buildings which still remain. His great grandson, Walter Adkins, Jr., worked in one of these buildings while in service (1940's) - (Walter, son of Clara Dickinson Adkins, was graduate of West Point Mil[itary] Academy). At end of war, J.C. Roberts was sent to Atlanta, GA and from there he is said to have walked home to S.C. J.C. moved from SC to G[eorgia] and on to Blount and Cullman Co, AL on farm of John M. Whorton.187
Death certicate info - "deceased reside at place of death? About 25 years." Died at home after illness of 2 years with a cause of death listed as "Sofning of the Brane"186. which apparently is an outdated term for stroke. (Also, familial Alzheimer's in this family - Persons known or suspected by E. Bryan Crenshaw III of having Alzheimer's, include Alta Roberts.) |
