| Notes for Joel CRENSHAW | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A number of non-primary sources give his name as Joel Nelson, but I haven't found a primary source that mentions this middle name (EBCIII). Transcription of obituary in e-mail151 from Alita McHugh Beck: Death of Joel Crenshaw. Joel Crenshaw died at his home near Argentville last Thursday, at the advanced age of 90 years, 4 months and 31 days. Deceased was born near Shepards- ville, Bullet [sic] County, KY.,Oct.,21, 1802, and came to Missouri on horseback in 1831, in company with a cousin, Or- ville Crenshaw crossing the Missis- sippi River at Clarksville on the ice. He spent the winter of 1831 with Thos. Rice, near Brussels, making rails for Mr. Rice at thirty cents a hundred. He was married February 12 , 1832, to Miss Nancy H. Norton, who came with her parents from Kentucky in 1830. She was born near Cox- Creek, Nelson County, KY., July 2, 1812. Mr. Crenshaw cropped with his father-in-law the year he was married, and in 1833 moved on Sugar Creek where he remained a short time before moving to the farm near Chan- tilly, where the Misses Foxwell now reside. When he made this move he could easily have carried all his earth- ly possessions on his back. In 1836 he entered and moved upon the farm where he had resided up to the time of his death. He was the father of fifteen children, the grandfather of thirty-four, and the great grandfather of twenty.
