Joel Pace and Mary East Joel
Pace
and Mary
East, who
settled in Jefferson Co Illinois in the early 1820s, came from Virginia
via Kentucky. The biographies should be in alphabetical order after the
following first biography. But, you may know someone’s
whole name where I only know the first name and the family name. Therefore
when I place Lizzie Smith in alphabetical order, and you look for this
person as Elizabeth Ann Smith, you won’t find her where you expect.
So use some imagination, and also check for her using a nickname, or using
her middle name only, or not using her middle name at all. Biographies generally begin by giving the person's name, followed by "son (or daughter) of" ..., then the birth date and birth place. Where the parents are given, the parent who was the descendant of Joel Pace and Mary East is shown first. Tip:
The intention is to eventually sort all descendants in alphabetical order.
This does not mean all persons will be listed in alphabetical order. To
find someone not in order, such as a mother-in-law, most computers will
allow you to hold down the Ctrl key and tap the F key. This will cause
a small window to open. In that window, type the name of the person you
wish to find, then hit the Enter key. Once a search is made, you can press
the Esc key and the <CtrlF> search will then remember that person's
name for the next search. Notes: Just as “the 1820s” means the years 1820 thru 1829, “the 1800s” means the years 1800 thru 1809. To indicate the range of years 1801 thru 1900 that would be written as “the 19th Century,” not the 1800s. Also, if a census page is referred to in these biographies, that will be whenever possible the printed page numbers which usually have a letter which goes with them (page 60A, 60B, etc), not the hand written page numbers.

Joel Pace was born 28 July 1762 in Pittsylvania Co VA. He was a son William Pace (born 1724 Middlesex Co VA) and Susanna West (born 1726 in VA). Joel was a Private in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. He married Mary East in Henry Co on 14 November 1780. She was born in 1764 in Pittsylvania Co (Henry Co was formed from Pittsylvania Co in 1776, so she wasn’t born in Henry Co as is often reported). By 1810 they were living in Woodford Co KY; their son John was also in Woodford Co in 1810. The distance from Woodford Co KY to Henry Co VA was about 400 miles overland, so in the 1810s years, with roads then nothing more that trails through the forest, it would have taken Joel and a few companions at least three weeks to go back to Henry Co to take care of his father-in-law’s estate. But they would have likely made trips back to Henry Co in order to bring back provisions to their new homes in KY, or would have gone back to spend the winter in Henry Co. In the 1810s, KY was not much more than a wild wilderness with hostile Indians living nearby; a harsh winter would have been much more survivable back in the civilized communities of VA. Joel did appear in the Henry Co court concerning the division of the estate of Mary's father in October 1814. Joel applied for a soldier’s pension from Jefferson Co IL on 23 March 1829; the Revolutionary War records gave his death date and his marriage date. After Joel died, Mary applied for a widower’s pension on 12 April 1842, and she was age 77 then. In Woodford Co KY in 1810 (census page 393) in Joel Pace’s home there were two boys under age 10 (sons Thomas East and William West), two young men ages 16 to 25 (any two of sons Joseph, Joel Jr, and Spencer), a girl under age 10 (daughter Milly), two girls age 10 to 15 (daughters Martha and Letitia), and one young woman age 16 to 25 (daughter Jane or Mary), in addition to Joel and his wife Mary (both in the 45 or older age group). The children not in Joel’s home in 1810 were John Montague, who had married in late 1803 and who was living in his own home in Woodford Co (census page 395), plus Frances who had married John Wright Watson in 1800. There is no Federal census record for Joel Pace in IL in 1820, but there was a State Census taken on 1 August 1820, and it shows Joel in Jefferson Co. There are Land purchases on 18 October 1818 in Pope Co IL (240 acres at $2 per acre), in the southern end of IL next to KY, but these land records could be for Joel Pace, son of Spencer Pace who was a brother of Joel Pace who settled in Jefferson Co IL in the summer of 1820. The nephew Joel Pace also lived in Marshall Co KY, just two counties south of Pope Co, and was born in the early 1790s. It wasn’t until 1 June 1819 that Joel, husband of Mary East, purchased Jefferson Co land (200 acres at $2 per acre). Many of the children of Mary and Joel moved to Jefferson Co IL with their father, Joel Pace Sr, via the Woodford Co KY area. Joel died at Mt Vernon, Jefferson Co IL on 31 August 1831 and was buried in the Pace Cemetery in Jefferson Co, as was Mary. She died in 1850, before the June census. All the known children were- 1. John Montague Pace, b 14 Aug 1783 2. Frances Pace, b 14 May 1785 3. Jane Pace, b 5 Aug 1787 4. Mary Pace, b 5 Aug 1789 5. Joseph Pace, b 1 Dec 1791 6. Joel Pace Jr, b 1 Dec 1791 7. Milly Pace, b 14 Aug 1806 (M,M94,JA,RC,M32,M33,W,536z,543h,203izc) NOTE: In KY in 1810 there were no Pace families in Bourbon Co, but in neighboring Clark Co there were: William Pace, age 16-25; Joseph Pace, age 26-44; John Pace, age 26-44; another Joseph Pace, age 16-25; Murray Pace, age 45+. The only other KY county with a John Pace in 1820 was Woodford Co, two counties west of Bourbon and Clark Counties. In Woodford Co were: John Pace, age 26-44, and Joel Pace, age 45+. In the same area of KY in 1810 were Jesse Pace, age 45+, in Rockcastle Co, two counties south of Clark Co. Other KY counties with Pace names in 1810 were Barren Co, in the south center of the state; that was William Pace, age 26-44. In nearby Cumberland Co was Langston Pace, age 26-44. In western KY, in Christian Co, was Spencer Pace, age 26-44. And the remaining KY county, Shelby Co, was James Pace, age 26-44; Shelby Co is four counties west of Clark Co where most Pace families were found in 1810. See the 1810 Map of KY. ___________________________________________________________ Their Descendants, in Alphabetical order Kay Alexander, daughter of Barbara Baugh and Kenneth G Alexander, was born about 1943, married a Mr Clark, and lived at Seattle, WA in 1995. He married Cora Evaline _____ in Knox Co IN on 20 February 1885 and they lived at Washington, Daviess Co IN in 1900, then at East St Louis, St Clair Co IL in 1910. She married John W Hagerman in Jefferson Co IL on 22 September 1878, and in 1880 they lived next door to her parents in Casner Twp. John was born in IL in 1852, probably a son of Judd Hagerman and Kate _____ of Odle, Marion Co. The marriage record for them has her name as Emma C, and the 1880 census has her name as Emily K. Therefore her middle name may be Catherine or Katherine. There weree no Hagerman graves found in Jefferson Co. They had a daughter- a. Mary E Hagerman, b 1879 (203rms) Emily Ella Pace, daughter of James Downing Pace and Mary Ann Casey, was born in 1865 in Jefferson Co IL. (203qs) Fae Pace, daughter of Carl Downing Pace and Vena M Davis, died at birth in 1934. She and Mae were twins. Fae was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Shiloh Twp, Jefferson Co with Mae. (K,203c) Frances Pace, daughter of Mary East and Joel Pace, was born 14 May 1785 in Pittsylvania, VA. She married Dr. John Wright Watson in Henry Co VA on 18 January 1800 at Martinville. She was just 15 years old; her husband, born 10 January 1771 in MD, grew up in VA, and was 29 when he married Frances. His father, John Watson, was born on the Isle of Man and, with a brother migrated to VA. John’s mother was Sarah _____. John was a graduate of Jefferson Medical College. Frances and John stayed in Henry Co VA for a while, then moved to Bourbon Co Ky in 1811. They settled not far from Paris, the county seat. Frances’ brother John Montague Pace and her parents lived in Woodford Co in 1810, two counties to the west. The delay in leaving Henry Co may have been necessary to enable John Watson to complete his medical training. At age 23 he was not sufficiently equipped to practice, even in those less formal times. When Joel Pace and his family moved to Jefferson Co IL, Frances and John W Watson followed about a year and a half later, on 21 November 1821. John and Frances at first located in Mulberry Hill area until the next spring, when he and his son Asa, built a large crib on the place a mile north of town, where he afterward lived. Eventually he located 1/4 mile south of Mt Vernon. In 1830 he lived next door to his brother-in-law William West Pace. John is said to have been much advanced to the average pioneer, a man with a fine education and broad views. He was County Assessor in 1822 and 1823. At first, there were two John Watson families in Jefferson Co in 1830: John H Watson, the eldest living son of John W Watson and Frances Pace, and the parents themselves (as J W Watson in 1830). In 1840 both John Watson families were still in Jefferson Co. It was the elder John Watson family who lived between William W Pace and Joel Pace Jr. The younger John in 1840 was John H Watson, with a wife born between 1801 and 1810, and with one son born in the 1830s. Frances and John W Watson had five sons shown in the 1830 census; some of children were born before coming to Jefferson Co IL in the early 1820s. John W died 3 June 1845 at Mt Vernon, Jefferson Co and Frances died that same year on March 3. Both were buried in Pace Cemetery in Dodds Twp. There are gravestones for Frances and John in Oakwood Cemetery at Mt Vernon also; since that cemetery is much newer, and since the information on their stones in Pace Cemetery is far more detailed, they were likely buried in Pace Cemetery. In looking at the birth dates of the sons, some dates are well known, and some are vague. The 1830 census of this family in Jefferson Co IL shows six children, but no daughters in his home; daughter Virginia had already married and was in her own home. Daughter Amelia has never been found on any census record, not even in her married siblings’ homes. The only reason we know she existed was from the Jefferson Co history books, written by people who knew Amelia from years prior. In the 1830 census, each child was placed in his age group, as was the method of the pre-1850 censuses. In this family, there were five sons at home and only one boy was per age grouping. We can correctly place the sons where we know the birth dates to the day: John H, born 15 Sep 1805, was already married, living with his wife in their own home; Thomas P, of whom we know extremely little, was previously thought to have been born about 1807; Asa B, born 12 Aug 1812, was not yet married and was the boy in the 15-19 age group; Joel F, born 16 Mar 1821, was the boy in the 5-9 age group; “the youngest was Harry M” in Wall’s history, and was born in 1826, so he was the boy in the under age 5 group; that leaves only two sons, one in the 10-14 age group and the other in the 20-29 age group. These are William B and Joseph P. And since William’s first marriage was in March 1831, and the 1860 census shows that he was then age 51, he therefore must have been the older boy, the one in the 1820-1829 group. Hence Thomas P was age 10-14. In addition, Wall’s history placed William B as the child born after Virginia, and she was born in 1803 (Wall’s wife Milly was a daughter of John H Watson, and he was the actual son born after Virginia). William was born before 1811 when his parents moved from VA to KY. Therefore William B was born late in 1810. Their children were- a. John Pace Watson, b early 1800s b. Virginia Watson, b abt 1803 c. (203rs) Jane Pace, daughter of Mary East and Joel Pace, was born 5 August 1787 in Henry Co VA. There is a marriage record between Jane Pace and John Tyler in Jefferson Co on 24 August 1823. In 1830 there were two John Tyler families, but only one had the right age for our subject. It appears that she married an older man who already had children. Her husband John was born in the 1770s, and when he married Jane, he already had three (or more?) children: two sons and a daughter who were either older teens or were young adults in 1830. By 1830 Jane had two children born in Jefferson Co- a. boy Tyler, b 1824-1825 (203j) b. girl Tyler, b 1826-1830 (203j) (M32,203jm) Jessie L Pace, daughter of Newton C Pace and Hanna L Bogan, was born in 1868 at Mt Vernon, Jefferson Co IL. (203rs) Joel Pace Jr, son of Mary East and Joel Pace, was born 1 December 1791 in VA, and was a twin brother of Joseph Pace and served in the War of 1812. Joel was the first Jefferson Co IL county clerk, the first Circuit Clerk the first County Judge of Jefferson Co IL, and was a merchant. He was the one who laid out the first town lots in order to start the town of Mt Vernon. Joel married Pamelia Daniel on 7 March 1822 in Franklin Co KY. She was born in Shelby Co KY on 9 August 1799 (the county next to Franklin Co). Because of their 1822 marriage date, and because there was a son in their home in 1830 who was born about 1811 to 1815, Joel Jr must have had a first marriage before his 1822 marriage to Pamelia Daniel. That marriage took place about 1810 or so, probably in KY. In 1850 they lived in district ten of Jefferson Co where he was a farmer. In 1860 they lived at Mt Vernon next to their son Charles, and in 1870 he was a retail merchant in Jefferson Co. Pamelia died on 28 July 1878 and Joel on 19 June 1879. Both were buried in Old Union Cemetery at Mt Vernon. Their children were- a. Joel Jackson Pace, b 1811-1815 b. Mary Elizabeth Pace, b 3 Nov 1823 c. Charles Thomas Pace, b 14 Aug 1825 d. (M32,M33,537m, 203jnqr) Joel H Pace, son of Joel Jackson Pace and Sophronia Scott, was born in 1846 in Jefferson Co IL. He probably died in the 1850s. (203n) Joel Henry Pace, son of Spencer Pace and Phoebe Wilkerson, was born 16 March 1832 in Jefferson Co IL He lived two doors from James Downing Pace in Jefferson Co in 1860, and next door in 1870. Joel had married Barthena Casey in Jefferson Co on 5 July 1855. Barthena was born in 1830 in Jefferson Co (age 5-9 in 1840, 26 in 1850, 30 in 1860, 40 in 1870, 50 in 1880), daughter of Martin S Casey and Celia Fayton, both from TN. In 1860 Joel and Barthena lived in Jefferson Co two doors from his brother James D Pace; in 1880 they lived at Casner in Jefferson Co. Joel died in 1881 and was buried in Locust Grove Cemetery. Since Barthena’s parents were buried there, and her husband Joel was, it stands to reason that Barthena was also. But no grave for her was found. Perhaps she married again after 1881, and is buried under a different name. She and Joel had six children, all born in Jefferson Co IL- 1. John M Pace, b 1858 2. Emily C Pace, b 1861 3. Mary A Pace, b 1862 4. Martha J Pace, b 1866 5. Charles H Pace, b 1868 6. James W Pace, b 1870 Barthena’s mother is buried in Locust Grove Cemetery. (203jnqrsc) Joel Jackson Pace, son of Joel Pace Jr and an unknown mother, was born between 1811 and 1815 in Woodford Co KY, and grew up there and in Jefferson Co IL. He purchased 46.76 acres in Jefferson Co from the Federal Government for $58.45 on 28 February 1839; he lived in Jefferson Co at the time. Joel married Sophronia Scott in Jefferson Co on 14 November 1831 when he was a young man and in 1840 lived a few doors from his father’s home. Joel’s wife was a few years older, born in NY in 1813. She had been married prior to her marriage with Joel J and had three children from that marriage. Joel died in the end of the 1840s and Sophronia was found still living in Jefferson Co with six children to support. She and Joel had three, all born in Jefferson Co IL- 1. Cynthia C Pace, b 1840 2. John M Pace, b 1843 3. Joel H Pace, b 1846 Sophronia’s children from her first marriage all used the Pace family name in 1850, and were all born in IL. He had not married by 1920, and was then living with his widowed mother and sister Mary Charlotte at Mt Vernon. John did marry Mildred _____ about 1922 and they lived at Belmont, Iroquois Co IL (as did his brother Thomas). Mildred was born in IN in 1898. They had two daughters by 1930, both born in either Jefferson Co or in Iroquois Co IL- 1. Etta E Pace, b 1925 (515f) 2. John had not married as of April 1930 and lived with his father. (K,M,ILd, 203vwfc) John H Pace, son of John Montague Pace and Hannah Heffelinger, was born 30 June 1826 in Jefferson Co IL. He was a prominent merchant, and at the time of his death was Police Magistrate of Mt Vernon, IL. John married Louisa M Guthrie in Jefferson Co on 24 October 1844. She was born 12 March 1822 in OH, and died 17 December 1862; she was buried in West Salem Cemetery in Jefferson Co. John also married Rachel J Creasy on 28 April 1863 in Jefferson Co; she was the mother of Gussie, the youngest child. Rachel was born in MS in 1841. John died 15 August 1873 and was buried in West Salem Cemetery; Rachel and daughter Gussie then boarded at the James Dobyers home in Mt Vernon. John’s children were all born in Jefferson Co IL- 1. (M33,203jnqrsuc) John Harvey Pace, son of Spencer Pace and Phoebe Wilkerson, was born in 1836 in Jefferson Co IL. In the 1850 census, he was living both with his mother, and with Robert Wilkerson, probably his mother’s close relative. John, as John H Pace Jr, married Sarah Jane Houseworth in Jefferson Co on 3 May 1857, and in 1860 they lived in Jefferson Co. Although his father was not of the same name, it was common in the 19th Century for a younger nephew or cousin of the same name to refer to himself as “Jr” in deference to the elder relative of the same name who lived nearby. His wife Sarah was born in OH in 1839 (age 25 in 1860, 31 in 1870, 41 in 1880). In 1880 they were living at Moores Prairie in Jefferson Co, three doors from James S Pace (born 1850). John was hard to follow over the census years: In 1850 he was John H Pace, age 13 when he lived with Robert Wilkerson, and was 14 year old Harvey Pace living with his mother; in 1860 he was Harvey J Pace, age 27 and recently married; in 1870 he was James H Pace, age 39; in 1880 he was John H Pace, age 43. The consistent “identifier” with him over the years was his wife. In 1860 she was Sarah J, age 25; in 1870 she was Sarah, age 31; in 1880 she was Sarah J, age 41. In all three census records she was born in OH. She and John had eight children, all born in Jefferson Co IL- 1. Talitha Alice Pace, b Dec 1858 2. Casey Pace (boy), b 1861 3. May Pace, b 1863 4. (203nmqs) John M Pace, son of Joel Jackson Pace and Sophronia Scott, was born in 1843 in Jefferson Co IL. Since he was not found after 1850, and was of age to have served in the Civil War, he may have died during that war. (JY,203n) John M Pace, son of Joel Henry Pace and Barthena Casey, was born in 1858 in Jefferson Co IL. He married Margaret E Buffington in Jefferson Co on 7 December 1879, and by the following summer they had split up. Margaret claimed she was a widow to the census taker, and was living with her parents in Casner Twp. John was living with his parents in 1880. Margaret was born in 1861 in Jefferson Co, daughter of Abraham W Buffington and Ozella Jane Martin. James and Margaret had a daughter- a. Eliza A Pace, b Apr 1880 (203qrms) John Montague Pace, son of Mary East and Joel Pace, was born 14 August 1783 in Pittsylvania, VA, and came from VA to east central KY by 1810, living for a while in Woodford Co, and from KY to Jefferson Co IL in the early 1820s. He married Hannah Heffelinger in Henry Co VA on 24 December 1803, and they possibly moved to Bourbon Co KY in 1804, but were definitely in Woodford Co KY in 1810. See the 1810 KY Note discussion following John’s mother’s biography. Hannah was born 23 June 1784 and died 16 May 1859; she was buried in Pace Cemetery in Dodds Twp, Jefferson Co with John. After his death on 20 December 1844, Hannah lived with her daughter Amelia and Amelia’s husband Joseph Guthrie. Because of the nine year gap in birth years of John and Hannah’s children between 1810 and 1819, and because no 1820 census record for them has been found, it is likely that there are three or four missing children during the decade of the 1810s, There were no mysterious female marriage records in Jefferson Co which could be applied to the years that those missing children would have been married. John and Hannah had about nine children, but just five are identified- a. Harvey Thurston Pace, b 20 Jan 1805 b. George W Pace, b 1806 c. girl Pace, b 1804-1810 in Woodford Co KY, was not found afterward; there was no unidentified marriage record for a young Pace woman in Jefferson Co IL during the late 1820s to 1840.
