This short Logan Family Tree was originally put together to try and determine who the parents of the two Hugh Logan men were, who lived in Cooper Co MO in the pre-1880s

Benjamin Logan and his wife Ann sold 309 acres to John Tutter for £100 on 26 June 1775. This land was on Beaver Creek, known as Shallow Creek, a branch of the Holston River. This was before the American Revolution. Then on 26 May 1780 Benjamin Logan received three land grants: 1,000, 1,000, and 600 acres on 26 May 1780, and his land was in what became Lincoln Co a few months later. To be granted this much land by the government, Benjamin must have served in the Revolution against the English. When the three counties of Jefferson Co, Lincoln Co, and Fayette Co were formed out of Kentucky Co VA in 1780, Benjamin Logan was in charge of the new Lincoln Co. He and his men built a fort, called Fort Logan, which over the years as the Indian wars died down and there was a reduced need for maintaining forts, Fort Logan came to be the last Standing Fort in the area, then the nickname was shortened to Stanford and became the community in Lincoln Co where many of the Logan families lived in the mid and late 19th Century. Other Logan grants in Lincoln Co were 1,000 acres each for Nathaniel and John Logan.

Since Benjamin was in charge of the military in the Lincoln Co area in 1780, and he was in charge of building a fort for protection from the Indians, he therefore was probably not a young man. Middle age seems more likely, which places his birth date at around 1740. He was of age to be a brother of Hugh Logan (1745), Timothy Logan (1756), and perhaps John Logan whjo also received a 1,000 acre grant

Hugh Logan, born 11 February 1745 in Augusta Co VA, died 25 December 1816 at Turnersville, Lincoln Co KY. He married Sarah Woods. She was born 1755 in Augusta Co and died 2 May 1814 in Mercer Co KY. He was likely the Hugh Logan who took title to 1,000 acres along Little Flat Lick on 26 May 1780 in Kentucky Co VA. Hugh’s acreage became a part of Jefferson Co VA when that county was formed on 1 November 1780. Since Hugh’s families all lived in the Lincoln and Garrard Counties, southeast of Jefferson Co, then Hugh must have sold his land and moved southeast. Lincoln Co was taken from Kentucky Co VA in 1780, and Garrard Co from Lincoln Co KY in 1797. For a man to claim title to 1,000 acres in those years, it was a grant from the new US Government for service in the Revolution, thus indicating that he must have been born prior to about 1760. He was the progenitor of some of the Hugh Logan descendants of Lincoln and Garrard Counties of the next century. He and Sarah had a son (and other children?)-

a.    Cyrus Logan, b 20 Nov 1789 in VA. He was age 45 or older in 1820 census (or was the young man born 1797-1804 in this home?). Cyrus died 20 October 1848 in KY. In 1820 he lived at Crab Orchard two doors from M C Logan. In 1840 he lived in Lincoln Co next door to Hugh Logan (a brother?). Cyrus, in the 1840 census, was born in the 1780s, and Hugh next door was born 1770s. Cyrus married Mahalia D Lewis in Lincoln Co KY on 22 Nov 1815. She was born in Lincoln Co VA on 20 November 1789, and died there in 1852. In the 1840 census, there were no children in their home. The Hugh Logan next door did have children, but because of Hugh’s age, these children must have been grandchildren. Cyrus had children-

       1.    Amanda T Logan, b 1817, married James Crow and had three children. She died at Stanford, Lincoln Co in 1880. (W)

       2.    John Logan, b 21 Aug 1819 at Lexington, Fayette Co KY, died 7 June 1901 in Washington Co IA. He married Mary Ann Hocker and they had a daughter. (W)

       3.    Hugh Logan, b 1819, was probably the Hugh Logan who married Arathema Broadus, in Garrard Co on 3 October 1837. (W,359m)

       4.    William Logan, b 1821, may be the William Logan who married Lydia Hocker in Lincoln Co on 10 June 1839. (W,124m) (W,124k)

b.    Allen Logan, b 1792 in Lincoln Co KY. See below. (W,(M67)

Timothy Logan, born in 1756, fought in the Revolutionary War and was receiving a pension by 1840. He then lived in Garrard Co KY, next to Elijah Logan (born 1810s). Also next door was David Logan (born 1810s) and John Logan (born 1780s). He had married Sarah Boone; she was born in 1767 in VA and died in Garrard Co in 1792. In Timothy’s home in 1840 was an older woman born in the 1780s (widowed daughter Polly?) and five teens and young adults. Timothy died in Garrard Co on 28 May 1848. Three known children were-

a.    Elizabeth Logan, b 1785 in Lincoln Co VA (later was Madison Co KY).

b.    John Logan, b 2 Apr 1876 in Madison Co VA, married Mary Finnell. See below,

c.    Polly Logan, b 23 Dec 1787 in Madison Co VA, married Elijah Simpson (a Mary Logan married William Simpson in Fayette Co in 1817). He was born 21 December 1782 in Lincoln Co VA, and died 1 December 1831 in Garrard Co KY. Polly was probably the woman born in the 1780s who lived in her father’s home in 1840. She had children-

       1.    Elizabeth Simpson (W)

       2.    Lucy Simpson, b 11 May 1819 in Madison Co KY, died 25 January 1879 in Garrard Co. She married Mitchell Broadus in Garrard Co on 6 November 1837. He was born 5 May 1818 and died 16 January 1897, son of Thomas Broadus and Elizabeth Ross. They had a daughter. (W,359m) (W)

d.    Hugh Logan, b 1790 in Lincoln Co VA, died in 1873. See below.

e.    Sarah Logan, b 1792 in Fayette Co KY, died in 1868. The Sarah Logan who married Madison D Philips in Garrard Co on 15 March 1834 was a daughter of Hugh (1790). (W) (W,359k)

David Logan, son of William Logan (died in 1791) and Elizabeth Crosswick, was born about 1764 in VA. He married Mary Perry about 1783 and they lived in Lincoln Co VA, which became a county in KY in 1792. David died there in 1809. Their children were all born in Lincoln Co KY / VA-

a.    Elizabeth Logan, b 1784, married Reuben Emmerson in Lincoln Co KY on 6 March June 1800. (W,124m)

b.    James Logan, b 1786

c.    Hugh Logan, b 1 Nov 1787, lived in Lincoln Co KY and died in 1848. See below.

d.    Mary “Polly” Logan, b 1789, married Washington Herrin on 10 June 1807 in Lincoln Co KY, had a daughter, and married James Forsythe on 27 September 1813. (W,124m)

d.    John Logan, b 4 May 1790, died 21 March 1846 in Lincoln Co. He married Malinda Stephenson in Lincoln Co on 16 November 1818. She was born in 1798 and died in 1832. John then married Jane Kyle Coggin on 17 September 1839 in Pulaski Co KY and they had two children. With Malinda he had seven-

       1.    Mary Logan, b 1820

       2.    David Stephenson Logan, b 1821

       3.    Elizabeth Jane Logan, b 1824

       4.    Thomas Logan, b 1826

       5.    Margaret Logan, b 1828

       6.    William George Logan, b 1830, died in 1920.

       7.    James Beattie Logan, b 1832

       8.    Richard Coggin Logan, b 1840 (W)

e.    George Logan, b 1792, married Cassandra Wiley, moved to Cooper Co MO, and after Cassandra died in the early 1840s he married Catherine _____. See below.

f.     Margaret Logan, b 1794, married Samuel E Roberson on 3 June 1812 in Lincoln Co. After he died in the 1850s, she lived with her brother George in Cooper Co MO.

g.    David Logan, b 1796, married Nancy Parks in Lincoln Co on 9 January 1822. (W)

To determine who the parents of the many Hugh Logan men were, a check of the three neighboring counties in KY where the many Logan families lived (Fayette Co, Garrard Co, and Lincoln Co) shows these families in 1810 (all are shown in the order they were found on the census):

Notes for Fayette Co: The first two families were on the same page; the next two were many pages later and without nearby Logan families. The next four families (David to James) were on the same census page. The last Hugh was 11 pages from the prior families. The first Hugh, with all the Zeros, apparently moved there after the intended date of the census, but the census taker was late and at first included him, then after- wards Zeroed out all the data. Or, more likely, the census taker listed Hugh twice, realized the mistake at a later time, and Zeroed out the info. This “Zero” Hugh appears to be the same one shown last.

Notes for Lincoln Co: This county was done somewhat alphabetically, so you cannot tell who actually lived nearby. There were three Hugh Logan men in Lincoln Co in 1810. Hugh Sr must be the one born in 1745 (see above), and one of the two young men in his home was Cyrus. One of the two Hugh Juniors may have been another son of Hugh Sr.

The older Hugh Logan, page 104, was the one who married Catherine Jackman in 1824 and lived with her in 1850 in Lincoln Co.
Hugh Logan Jr, page 83, was the one who married Catherine Barbee Withers and died in 1848, leaving a house full of young adult children.

Hugh Logan, born in 1779 in VA, was probably a son of the Hugh (1745) shown in Lincoln Co in 1810 as Hugh Sr. The son Hugh (1779) enlisting in the army on 30 October 1812 and fought in the War of 1812. He lived in Lincoln Co in 1840, close to (brothers?) Cyrus and Harrison Logan. In 1840 in his home were only females in addition to Hugh. He had married Catherine Jackman on 15 December 1824 in Lincoln Co. She was born in KY in 1790, and was the wife Catherine living with him in 1850. Since this Hugh married at age 45, he may have married before then. There were only two Hugh Logan men born in the late 18th Century and living in Lincoln Co KY in the 1820s to 1850. The other Hugh Logan who married Catherine Withers on 26 November 1823 was Hugh Jr in 1840 in Lincoln Co and died in 1848. The 1840 census records show just three daughters living with Hugh (1779) and Catherine in 1840 and 1850-

1.    Elizabeth Logan, b 23 Jun 1826, married a Mr Mason, and died 11 Mar 1916 in Garrard Co, Her mother was Catherine Jackman (per death certificate). In 1850, Elizabeth did not live with any of the three Hugh Logan men (1779, 1787, & 1790), so she therefore probably had married by 1850. There was no Logan-Mason marriage in the 1840s in either Lincoln Co nor in Garrard Co. The only Elizabeth Logan marriage found in the 1840s was with Joseph Oder in Garrard Co on 28 May 1849. This Elizabeth was born in 1829 and was a daughter of the 1790 Hugh Logan. (W,124k)

7.    Arthusa Anna Logan, b 8 Sep 1821. In 1860 she and her husband George C Hardin lived in Garrard Co, and newly married John R Logan, son of Arthusa’s brother Elijah, lived with Arthursa and George. Arthursa married George in Garrard Co on 28 November 1837. He was a cabinet maker, and was born in 1816 in KY. In 1840 there were just four Hardin homes in Garrard Co; one was George Hardin and he and his wife were of the same ages seen in later census records for them. They had no sons in 1840. They were not found in 1850, and there were no Hardin children in the 1860 census in their home. In 1870, Georg’s 83 year old father Robert Hardin lived with him and Arthursa. Robert was one of the four Hardin families found in 1840 in Garrard Co, and had married Elizabeth Oder, George’s mother. In their home in 1870 were two children, probably grandchildren: Luvina Hardin, age 21 and was a milliner; Joseph G Hardin, age 15; and George R Hardin, age 1. The 1870 census taker did not do his job well; most of the ages were off by years. In 1880 George and Arthursa lived in Rockcastle Co KY. the county next to Garrard Co to the southeast. And in their home was daughter-in-law Luvinia Hardin and her three children. Arthusa died about 1890. her only child was-

       a.    John Hardin, b 1847 in Garrard Co. He had married Luvina _____, then died by 1870, leaving her with three children. Luvina was born in 1849 in KY. John’s parents helped raise their grandchildren-

               1.    Joseph Hardin, b 1867 (1213s)

               2.    George Hardin, b 1869 (1213s)

               3.    Mary L Hardin, b 1876 (1213s) (W,359mkqr, 1213s)

Mason’s wife in 1860 and 1870 was Tilda J, born about 1842. In 1880 she was Matilda, born about 1841. By 1870 Mason had five children. In 1880 they lived at Adams, Decatur Co IN with their three youngest children. In 1900 Mason lived at Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co. Matilda J was born 2 September 1839 in Adair Co, daughter of Dr John Bradshaw and Millie Wheeler, and died at Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co on 13 December 1915. She was buried at Lancaster, Garrard Co. Mason died 9 August 1903, probably in Lincoln Co. They had six children in 1900, with four still alive, but only one was living at home. All were born in Garrard Co-

       a.    Mary Ann Logan, b 23 Jan 1856 in Garrard Co, married Harvey G Foley in Lincoln Co on 19 November 1878. He was born in January 1854 in Lincoln Co, son of Andrew B Foley and Elizabeth Pitts. In 1880 Harvey and Mary lived with Mary’s parents at Adams, Decatur Co IN, but in 1900 were back in KY, at Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co. She died at Crab Orchard on 25 August 1941 and was buried there. He was in Cooper Co MO in 1840 thru 1860, but was not found in KY or MO in 1830. His young adult children living with him in 1860 were born in MO. In 1850 a close neighbor was John W Logan, born in KY in 1821. George’s wife in 1850 was Catherine Tompkins from VA. She was born in 1800. He and “Miss Catherine Tompkins” married on 19 November 1846 in Cooper Co. The wife in the 1840 census was a first wife, Cassandra Wiley, whom George married in Lincoln Co KY on 4 March 1818.
