James East, Sr. and his three sons – Joseph, James, Jr., and Robert – first appeared in Georgia in Wilkes County tax records, in that part of Wilkes County that later became Oglethorpe County in 1793. The following Wilkes County tax record information is provided by Mr. Frank Parker Hudson, a professional genealogist, author of several books on genealogical subjects, and a descendant of Aaron Parker

 

[Comment: Research in Georgia is particularly complicated because of the large number of very small counties (compared to most states), and because of the constant flux in creating new counties and adjusting the boundaries of them. New counties were created from ceded Indian lands, and from the division of older counties. [The compiler believes that this entry for James East is in error and that it should have been for Joseph East. James East, Sr. and James East, Jr. both made their returns in Capt. Sanders’ District in 1795, same as while it was Wilkes County. James, Sr. and Jr., continued to live in Oglethorpe Co. until at least 1800.
