East
families in NC in 1790
were only in Stokes Co, and Stokes Co is at the north central edge of
NC, next to the southern edge of VA. The county across the border in
VA in 1790 was Henry Co VA. The 1790 NC census combined with the 1782
tax list of Henry Co VA shows the following East families. The British
burned the first two census records and other records of Henry Co in
the War of 1812, so we have to rely on land and tax records to determine
who lived in most VA counties for the pre-1814 years. Henry Co was formed
from Pittsylvania Co in 1777, and the Pittsylvania tax records show
two East men. Other records for south central VA in the counties next
to Stokes Co in NC also show a few East men. In Stokes Co, Salisbury
District: Thomas was on page 544, seven doors from Joseph on page 545.
Joseph was five & six doors from Isham & William; Isham &
William lived next door to each other. |

Asa’s two sons under age 10 in 1800 must have been Thomas and an unknown son. The daughter under age 10 was Sarah. From the above table, it appears that Thomas East Sr was the father of the other four East men. Was there a will or probate record in Stokes Co for him? |

In 1810 in Stokes Co there was only one East family, Thomas, in Shores Reed District (census page 126 / 129) |

The 1820 Census records thought to be connected (as of 17 January 2005) with the East families of south central VA and north central NC are here briefly shown so that others may easily follow up with their own searches. Keep in mind that the 1820 census age-breakdowns are |

Females |
0-9, 10-15 |
16-25, 26-44. 45 & Up | |||||||
Note that just because two families are on the same census page number, that does not necessarily mean they lived nearby; often, the census taker would rewrite his info in alphabetical order, putting two families with the same last name on the same census page, even though they actually may have lived at opposite corners of the county. |
|||||||||
The last number grouping, after the Pg Number, are the total number of foreigners not Naturalized, total engaged in Agriculture, Commerce, Manufacturing, total Free colored, and total Slaves; after the total Free colored or Slaves, the gender will be a small letter for female or male. If the third grouping is blank, then the census had no info for that. |

Missouri was part of the Louisiana Territory between 1805 and 1812, when it became a territory by itself. It didn’t become a state until 1821, and before that the Indians, encouraged by the British, did a good job of keeping the White settlers out of MO. There was no MO census until 1830. |
