Nancy East [E4c3a2c], daughter of Thomas East and Mary _____, was named in her father’s 1807 will, so she was alive then, and she was an East, not with a married name. She was probably born around 1770 and lived in Stokes Co or Surry Co NC. (76p)

Nancy East [E4c1a2d], daughter of Benjamin East and Nancy Ann Pruitt, was probably born in the 1770s in Goochland Co VA. She married Martin Strong in Goochland Co on 26 December 1799. It is here assumed that Nancy is a daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Ann because another daughter (Mary) also married a Strong, two and a half years prior, in Goochland Co. The only East families in the county in the 1790s were Benjamin's and Nancy Ann's family. Since Nancy’s mother was named Nancy Ann, it would be quite common for a daughter to have the same name. There was a marriage in Goochland Co on 30 May 1802 between Ann East and William Elliott. If this Ann was Nancy Ann East, and if her first marriage was with Martin Strong, then Martin must have died and Nancy Ann married again to William Elliott. The only other daughter of Benjamin and Nancy who could have had a middle name Ann and married Mr Elliott was Martha, and there is no evidence that happened. There was a Martin Strong family living in Hanover Co VA in 1810, and the ages of this couple fit the ages of Nancy and her husband. Hanover Co is the county northeast of Goochland Co. (M92,JY,556m,23h)

Nancy East [E13a1a], daughter of James East and Martha Clarkson, was born 1 February 1779 in VA, probably Louisa Co. She lived in Augusta Co and married Timothy Hartigan in Augusta Co on 9 January 1798. Her father put up the marriage bond. Timothy was born in 1768 in Ireland. In 1850 they lived in Augusta Co’s district 2½, family 1452. Timothy’s was the only Hartigan family in VA in the pre-1840 years; in 1850 there were some of his descendants in Botetort Co. Timothy and Nancy had at seven children, the first six born in Augusta Co VA-

Nancy East [E4c3a1g], daughter of Joseph Cannon East and Martha Cockerham, was born about 1789 in Surry, NC. Common belief was that she was the Nancy East who married John Marsh in Surry Co on 13 November 1817, but that Nancy East was born about 1800. (W,240n)

Nancy East married James Parker on 21 December 1805 in Accomack Co VA. (M94)

Nancy East [E4c6c5d], daughter of James East and Lucy English, was born in 1794 in Lincoln Co KY. She grew up in Lincoln and Garrard Counties, and married James M Estes in Garrard Co KY on 15 November 1819. James was born in Lincoln Co on 2 May 1798. James Estes and his wife and children were living in Lincoln Co in 1830. Since they were not found in 1820, James and Nancy were probably living with one of their parents then.

In 1840 they were in Lincoln Co (as James Estis), both born in the 1790s. Their children in 1840 matched closely to the children’s ages of 1830, and later of 1850. In 1850 James and Nancy were still in Lincoln Co KY. Their ages were shown as 52 each, both born in KY. There were children in their home ranging in ages from 29 down to 10. In addition, there was a 5 year old James M Snow, a 66 year old James East (born 1784), and a 24 year old Joseph Fletcher living with them. James Snow was there also in 1860, and Joseph Fletcher lived next door in 1860. Everyone was born in KY. This same James East was also in Lincoln Co in 1840, living alone and age in the 50s. James Estes died in Lincoln Co in August 1868 and Ñancy died in 1865. Nancy and James had six children by 1830, and about six more born after 1830-*

In 1850 there was an unknown Richard Estes living with Nancy and James. He was born in 1825 in KY; his birth year does not match any son from the 1830 and 1840 census since son James C filled that position. (W,359mh,124jn)

Nancy East [E4c1a3d], daughter of Josiah East and Rebecca Caldwell of Laurens Co SC, was not at home in 1810, and not married by August 1818 (or was married to an East?) when her father's will was written. (M92,3h)

Nancy East [E4c3z1], parents unknown, lived in Surry Co NC. She was born in 1800 in NC and had married John Marsh in Surry Co on 13 November 1817. Minor Marsh (born 1757 in NC) provided the marriage bond, and he was probably John’s father. John was born about 1795 in Surry Co. Nancy lived in Surry county for the rest of her life, and had children. Minor Marsh lived between William Venable and son Thomas Venable in 1810 in Surry Co. John Marsh (and Minor Marsh) lived in Surry Co in 1820; he was born between 1795 and 1804, as was his wife, and they had a son under age 10. Next door was Minor Marsh, who was age over 45 then (born before 1776). In Surry Co in 1820 were just three East families: John, Joseph, and Chandler East. In 1830 the only John Marsh in the area was in Surry Co. That John Marsh was born in the 1760s, and his wife was born in the 1800s; They had a daughter under the age of 5 in 1820. That same John Marsh in 1840 lived in the same neighborhood, had four sons and three daughters, and his wife was born in the 1790s. She outlived him, and was a widow in Surry Co in 1850. She was born about 1800, so was very likely not a daughter of Thomas East. But she could easily be a granddaughter. (W,240mhijkn)

Nancy East [E4c3b3c], daughter of John H East and Mary Ann Burch, was born about 1803 in NC (age 10-15 in 1820, 45 in 1850, 57 in 1860, 70 in 1870, 80 in 1880). She married Joseph True Arnold in Surry Co NC on 1 September 1827. The marriage bond was paid by her brother Hughes East. Joseph was born in 1806 in VA (age 43 in 1850, 54 in 1860, 69 in 1870). They remained in Surry Co and did not move to IN in the late 1820s when Nancy’s family did. They lived close to two Burch families in 1830. Soon after 1830 they did move to Indian Creek, Monroe Co IN. In 1850 two doors away was Henderson T Laffoon [E4c3a2b1e] and his family. In 1860 they lived at Adams, Parke Co IN, and in 1870 were at Riley, Vigo Co. Joseph died in the 1870s and Nancy moved in with her son Paris, living at Irving, Montgomery Co IL. Nancy and Joseph had a daughter by 1830 and seven more children born in IN by 1850-

Nancy East [E4a2a4b], daughter of Isaac East and Joyce Pemberton, was born 18 November 1802 in Pittsylvania Co VA and moved to Adams Co OH when she was a girl. She married William Nichols on 6 January 1819 in Adams Co. He was born in Pittsylvania Co on 10 February 1794. William fought in the War of 1812 against the British and Nancy received a war pension of $8 per month. In 1830 they lived at Fairfield Twp, Butler Co OH (census page 15), four counties west of Adams Co. Nancy’s sister Rhoda and her husband James Cox and their two sons also lived in Farfield Twp, Butler Co that same summer.

In 1840 in Bartholomew Co IN, both Nancy and Nancy’s husband William Nichols were found. Living a few doors away was James Cox (and wife Rhoda East). This Nichols family’s name was then Nicholson in error, but living next door to William Nicholson was (widow) Sarah Awalt; Sarah’s son William married Nancy East’s daughter Mariah in 1841, thus identifying the William Nicholson family as actually William Nichols.

In 1860 they lived at Union, Davis Co IA a few doors from, her sister Rhoda. Nancy died in Union Twp Nodaway Co MO on 18 March 1885. They had seven children, all born in OH, before they moved to IA and MO-

They had eleven children, seven still living in 1880. All were born in MS-

James was born in August 1837 in MO, son of Moses Gee (born KY) and Cynthia Sherrin (born MO), and grew up at Union, Lawrence Co AR. In the 1850s, James had moved to Linn Co MO. He was living with the A J & Sarah Bilyen family (ages 30 & 21) in 1860 (on 4 September 1860) (On 10 September 1860 a James Gee lived with his brother Aaron in Lawrence Co AR — perhaps this person was not the right James Gee since he was two years too young.). In 1870 he was still in Linn Co, but living with Andrew and Mary E Miller (ages 41 & 22), working as a farm hand. In 1870, James and Mrs Miller claimed they were born in KY. James died in Polk Co on 8 November 1925 and Nancy continued to live with their son Boyd. She died 18 May 1938 in Benton Co. Both were buried in Salt Creek Cemetery in Polk Co. They lived in Lincoln Co for years; in 1900 Warren’s parents lived close by. Myra claimed that she was age 43 in 1930; this would put her birth year at 1887, just eight years before her 1895 marriage. Hence, she was probably born in 1877. That also agrees with her claim that her first marriage was at age 18. They had three children born in Lincoln Co-*

Nancy Elizabeth East [E4c6c5f2f], daughter of Neal East and Mary DeWeiss Prather, was born 25 March 1857 in Lawrence Co IN. She married William Haggard about 1876. He was born in 1855. Nancy died in 1883. They had two children: Jesse Haggard, born 1877 and Delia Haggard, born 1879. This preceding information was from East family records, obviously written down from memory a generation or two after the event happened. At the same time, Haggard family records show similar information, but without as many incorrect guesses for dates. The Haggard family info stated that William Harvey Haggard married Elizabeth East, and later he married Mary Ayier. Haggard records also had an accurate East-Haggard marriage date, and had William Haggard’s parents’ names. The East family had an accurate birth date for Nancy Elizabeth East. In combining the two sets of family information, and adding census records and other standard genealogical source records, we now have a revised set of information: Nancy Elizabeth East, born 25 March 1857 in Lawrence Co IN, married William Harvey Haggard on 7 February 1878. William was born 8 July 1852 in Lawrence Co, son of James A Haggard and Nancy Cole. Soon before 1880, Elizabeth and William moved to Evan, Kingman Co KS where William’s parents were living. About the time William and Elizabeth arrived, William’s mother died and his father then moved in with William and Elizabeth. At this same time, living next door was Elizabeth’s next older brother J W (Joshua W) East, age 24, and cousin John Prather, age 28, who had lived with Elizabeth and her siblings for at least twenty years. Because of these two next door neighbors, we can be sure that this Elizabeth East was the same Nancy Elizabeth East who we know was a daughter of Neal East of Lawrence Co.

Elizabeth died in the early years of the 1880s, probably at Evan, KS and early in 1884 William then married Mary E Ayier and they moved to Whipple Creek, Clark Co WA about 1890. She was born in MO in November 1862 and died in Clark Co WA in the 1910s. After Mary died, William lived with his son Jesse and Jesse’s wife and children at Salmon Creek. William died at Ridgefield, Clark Co WA in 1935. Between the two marriages, there were five children; only one was Elizabeth’s-*

All of the land of Missouri belonged to Spain and / or France prior to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In 1805 Missouri became part of Louisiana Territory, and then in 1812 it became a territory in its own name. The population in the new Missouri Territory in 1812 was about 20,000; most of its settlers came from KY and VA. When the Territory became a state in 1821 in had about 56,000 White settlers.

North East [E4c6c2], son of Josiah East and Eleanor _____, was born about 1760 in Louisa Co VA. He was list on a 1787 Lincoln Co VA Personal Property tax list (see note below), and was found on the Madison Co tax list of 1789 and 1790. In 1787 he was taxed for three horses and two cattle. North was a Lieutenant in the 7th Regiment (Madison Co) of the KY Militia on 9 August 1792. (Kentucky Co VA became the state of Kentucky on 1 June 1792.)

North married Karenhappuch Peyton in Lincoln Co on 1 March 1786; the marriage was witnessed by Jesse Wright, John Arbuckle, and Edward Low. Karen’s actual given name was a biblical name. She was a daughter of Phillip Peyton and Winifred Bussell, who gave their permission. Karen was under age 21, born after 1765. They lived in Wayne Co (two counties to the south, next to TN) from 1810 until he died there at Meadow Creek by 10 February 1815 when his heirs sold the land they inherited from North’s estate. Karen died about 1811. North and his son (or brother?) Daniel were in Captain Micah Taul's Company from Wayne Co in the War of 1812, and North was a member of the KY House Of Representatives in 1807. He had at least seven children-

Lincoln Co VA is now in KY; Madison Co was formed in 1786 from Lincoln Co. Kentucky Co VA became the state of Kentucky on 1 June 1792. (W,M92,M16,M20, M21, BW,K,125h)

North East [E4c6c5b], son of James East and an unknown mother, was born between 1785 and 1794 in Lincoln Co KY or VA (Lincoln Co was a VA county in 1790). He was living in Wayne Co KY in 1810, two counties south of Garrard Co. His brother Isaac may have been the second adult male in North’s home in 1810. He was not found after then. There are tax records of a North East in late 1780s and in 1790 in Madison Co and Lincoln Co VA (the part which became KY in 1792); this was for North East [E4c6c2], eldest son of Josiah East and Eleanor _____, and who was an uncle of the younger North East. There was a marriage in Lincoln Co KY on 14 August 1810 between North East and Elizabeth Dickerson. She was under age (born after 1790), and her mother Elizabeth gave consent. This North East may have been North East [E4c6c2], son of Josiah East. The only other record found of a North East who might have been related to this North East was the 1840 Hempstead Co AR census. He was a son of William East [E14a1] and Rachel Castleberry, and was born in 1806. North East, born about 1790 in Lincoln Co was not found after 1810. (W,M52,BG, 125h)

North East [E14a1b], son of William East and Rachel Castleberry, was born in 1806 in GA and grew up in Hempstead Co AR. He married in the mid-1830s to Rachael C _____ about 1837, and lived next to his parents in Hempstead Co in 1840;. he had two children then. Rachel was born in AR in 1816. North died in Hempstead Co in 1848 by the 19th of September when his brother Joseph became the sole executor of his estate. Rachael later married Bennett Mitchell in Hempstead Co, on 10 November 1850. In the June 1850 census she and her children were shown living with Bennett and his children from his prior marriage, so apparently he "made and honest woman out of her" when they married a few months later. In 1860 she was using the East family name, and Bennett was not with her, but she had a nine year old boy, David M East; he apparently was the son of Rachael and Bennett. North and Rachael had six children by the time he died in the late 1840s, Note that there were only two families with the East name in Hempstead Co in 1850: North’s brother Joseph, and these six East youngsters living with 60 year old Bennett Mitchell.. They had to be the orphaned children of North. All were born in Hempstead Co-

Obedience East [E4a2a3b], daughter of Ezekiel East and Elizabeth Worsham, was born about 1803 in Pittsylvania Co VA, and was named after her paternal grandmother. On 19 January 1824 in Pittsylvania Co she was married to James King by Reverend Shadrack Mustain and her father posted the marriage bond. The James King (Sr) family was a next door neighbor of Obedience’s sister Sarah in 1820 in Pittsylvania Co. In 1830 Obedience and James lived next door to her father, with James King Sr two doors away. It’s highly likely that James King Sr was Obedience’s father-in-law; in 1820 there were two sons in his home of James Jr’s age group, and after James Jr and Obedience married, there were none, plus they lived two doors apart in 1830. James Jr was born about 1805 in Pittsylvania Co. Six years into their marriage they had three children. In 1840 their close neighbors were her father and younger sister Permelia in one home, her twin brothers Ezekiel Jr and Henry in one home, her elder sister Sarah, and her future step-mother Mrs Mary Thurman. Obedience died in the 1860s and James was living alone in 1870 (age 65). In 1880 in Pittsylvania close to the Staunton River, in James’ home were his daughter “E Hagewood” age 50, and four Hagewood grandchildren. They had ten children by 1850, all born in northern Pittsylvania Co-*

After his discharge, Quincy enlisted on 14 July 1864 at Philadelphia, PA as a landsman in the Navy. He served on the Princeton to 31 July 1864; on the Mingoe to June 15 1865; on the Princeton to 27 July 1865; on the Bermuda to 22 September 1865; on the Princeton to 30 September 1865; on the Champkin to 15 June 1867; and was discharged from the Brooklyn on 11 September 1867 as a fireman second class. According to the various military documents, Quincy contracted malaria, diphtheria, dyspepsia, had rheumatism and piles while he was serving in the military. There were times when his muscles twitched from the pain, and his abdomen burned. There were affidavits written by members of his old regiment, and from Thomas Wheatly East, and from Albert Campbell East, Quincy’s cousin and brother-in-law in 1898 attesting to Quincy’s medical problems.

Reuben East [E1b4b], son of John East and Elizabeth Payne, was born in Henry Co VA on 12 March 1819. He married Harriet Knight Young about 1840, probably in Giles Co TN. She was the eldest child of Rufus K Young and Rebecca Young (no relation), and was born 12 March 1821 in Giles Co. Harriet grew up in Giles Co. Since she and her brother Amaziah were members of Robertson Fork Church in northeast Giles Co in the 1830s and until after her marriage, it can be assumed that this is where the marriage took place. Reuben and Harriet moved to Wayne Co by August of 1841 and lived there for over twenty one years where he was a farmer and justice of the peace. The Wayne Co court booted Reuben out of office "for holding an office under the so called Confederate States of America" on 3 July 1865. Soon afterwards Reuben, Harriet, and most of their children moved upriver to Savannah where Reuben opened a hotel called the East House in the center of town south of the town square on the southwest corner of the intersection of Court St and Cherry St (picture). This was the only hotel in Savannah until 1888 when the metropolitan was established. They sold their hotel on 8 April 1892 to Mr J K Barlow, but remained at Savannah until their deaths. At Savannah, he was also a justice of the peace. Over the years they lived in their nearby home, but apparently were living in the hotel when it was sold. Reuben was elected to be a ranger in Savannah for two years beginning in January 1887, and again in January 1890.

Harriet and Reuben were the family magnets over the years; as long as they were living, their children often moved back to Savannah even after having married and moved away. Harriet died 21 July 1897, and Reuben on 23 July 1896; both are buried in the Savannah Cemetery. They had eleven children-

Harriet Young's brother Amaziah had a son Jeremiah Young who first married Emily East, Harriet's daughter. After Emily died, Jeremiah married a daughter of Harriet's oldest son John H East. (M77, L,N,FE,11nqy,9rsczy, 15kxzw,51c)

Reuben M “Rube” East [E1b12k], son of Barzley Graves East and Elizabeth Frances Tanner, was born 17 January 1867 in McNairy Co TN. He was a farmer in McNairy Co, and married Ida Kendrick about 1898. She was born in TN in August 1875. About 1906 Reuben had married a second time, to Mary Dee Erwin. She was born in TN on 3 November 1878 at Crump, Hardin Co, daughter of David Nathaniel Erwin and Mary Susan Barlow, and died at Lawton, McNairy Co on 1 June 1960. In 1932 Reuben lived at Adamsville, in McNairy Co about ten miles northwest of Savannah, where he was a farmer. His brother Bob was living with Rube’s family in 1930. Rube died at Lawton on 26 September 1956 and was buried in Clear Creek Church Cemetery near Stantonville. He had two children by 1930-

1.   Ancle Grady East, b 6 Oct 1898

In 1920, Mary Dee’s father was living with her and Rube. (B,W,EP, 13suvfc,9w)

Rex Jay East [E1b13k3b3], son of Acel W East and Nila Larson, was born 3 December 1946 at Tucson, AZ. He married Merilee Murry on 18 November 1966 and they lived at Benson, Cochise Co. (NL,1101P)

Rhea L East [E4c3a6d4g4], daughter of Harley Miner East and Nellie Alfretta Bonine, was born 5 May 1910 in MI. She was a bookkeeper for a clothing store in1930, was still single, and lived with her parents at Niles, Berrien Co MI. She married Howard A Prather and died 8 May 2000 at Newman, GA. Howard was born 7 June 1908 at Marcellus, Cass Co, son of Thomas A Prather and Josie B _____, and died 6 April 1936. Rhea married a Mr Benninghoff after Howard died. She and Howard had a daughter who used the Benninghoff name. (W,72vwf, 955w,946f)

Rhoda East [E4a2a4c], daughter of Isaac East and Joyce Pemberton, was born about 1804 in Pittsylvania Co VA. She was a small girl when her family moved to Adams Co Ohio. Rhoda married James Cox on 9 December 1824 in Adams Co. Her marriage date could have been in 1821, not in 1824, misread by researchers 150 years later; check the birth date of her son Ennis.. James was born about 1803. In 1830 all of Rhoda’s sisters can be accounted for, and yet there was a female of Rhoda’s age who lived with her parents, and probably had two young sons under age 5. At the same time that summer, James Cox and his two sons and wife lived in Fairfield Twp, Butler Co OH (as did Rhoda’s sister Nancy). Perhaps Rhoda was listed with her parents a few weeks earlier while James established a home in Butler Co, then Rhoda and her two sons moved west and were picked up in the Butler Co census. The two sons in the Adams Co census were both under age 5; the two sons in the Butler Co census were one under age 5 and the other was age 5 to 9; both parents in Butler Co were of Rhoda’s and James’ ages.

In 1840 in Bartholomew Co IN, both James Cox (and Rhoda) lived a few doors from Rhoda’s sister Nancy and Nancy’s husband William Nichols. Rhoda was at Union, Davis Co IA in 1860. She lived three doors from her sister Nancy and brother-in-law William Nichols. Rhoda was living with her son Amos Cox, age 37. She claimed she was born in 1804 in VA, and Amos Cox was born in OH (Census page 142). Rhoda’s apparent sons were-*

1.   Ennis Cox, b 10 Jun 1822 in Adams Co OH, married Lucy A Belle in Bartholomew Co IN on 3 August 1843. She was born about 1831 in IN, and died 7 November 1849 in Bartholomew Co IN, perhaps with the birth of her son Benjamin. Ennis then married Rebecca Kirk in Bartholomew Co on 7 February 1850. In 1850 Ennis and Rebecca lived at Wayne, Bartholomew Co; he was age 36 and Rebecca was age 30, both born in IN (the census taker was sloppy). The state census of 1 July 1856 shows Ennis (age 33) and Rebecca (age 27) and their four children living in Davis Co. She was born about 1828 in NC. In 1860 Ennis (as Amos Cox, age 37) lived at Union, Davis Co IA with his wife Rebecca (age 36, born NC) and his children (family #1000). His mother Rhoda (age 56) lived with him and Rebecca.

In 1870 Rebecca and Ennis lived at Union; she was age 42, born in NC, and Ennis was age 48, born in OH. In 1880 Ennis was without a wife; Rebecca had died on 30 July 1878, and her sister Martha Kirk (not married) lived with Ennis and his three children as a housekeeper. She was still living with Ennis in 1885, age 40 then. Ennis had a last marriage on 1 July 1880 to Lucinda E Corrisk and lived at Union. Lucinda was born 8 May 1834 in OH, and died 16 July 1917 in IA. Ennis died at Union on 11 July 1890 and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery at Troy, Davis Co. His gravestone gave his age as “68 y 1 m 1 d” which places his birth on 10 June 1822. His was the only Cox grave found in that cemetery. Ennis’ eight children from the first two marriages were-*

      a.    James Henry Cox, b 1845 in IN. In 1860 he lived with his father and step-mother Rebecca at Union, Davis Co IA. James was at Union in 1870 (family #149), and had married Isabelle M Wiley about 1866. She was born in MO in 1846, daughter of NY born parents. In 1880 they lived at Troy, Davis Co. James was a “huckster” then (a salesman). They lived at Chicago, IL in 1900 and James was then a bookkeeper. He also had a new wife, Isabel A _____, born in IA in December 1861, daughter of a MD born father and a Canadian mother. They married in 1893, but had no chilren by 1900. This Isabel died by 1920 and James then lived with his daughter Irene at Chicago. With Isabelle M, James had six children, all born in Davis Co IA-*

In 1920 he was living at Stockton, San Joaquin Co CA and worked as a grocer. He had married again about 1900 to a Ms Royer, probably at Chicago, and this wife died by 1910. Bernard then married a third time, to Julia Theresa Walsh in the 1910s and they lived in the west side of Stockton. She was born in CA on 9 January 1878, daughter of Thomas Walsh (born 1844) and Julia Connelley (born 1850), both from Ireland. Before Julia married Bernard, she worked as a telephone operator at Stockton. In 1930 they lived at O’Neal in San Joaquin Co.                     a.    Bethel May Cox, b Oct 1915 at Chicago, IL. (542w)

There was an Olin Cox from Shelby Co IA, born about 1873. He was Olin Everett Cox, born 28 Sep 1872. That Olin married Sarah, and afterwards lived and died in southern CA.

May Helena Cox, age 32, took a trip to England to visit Captain H Baynham (her father?) at Ealing District, London, and returned on the ship SS New York, sailing from Liverpool on 29 September 1915, arriving at New York on 6 October 1915. She reported that she was married, and had no baby with her. Mrs May Helena (Baynhamn) Cox died at Los Angeles, CA on 11 September 1958. Her death record shows that she was born 1 May 1882, and her mother’s maiden name was Janisch. The London, England register of births shows that May was born there at Lewisham. This May Baynham had married Harry Jasper Cox at Lewisham in 1909, so she was not the wife of Olin Egbert Cox. Harry was a surveyor. This May and Harry had children Charles H and Cecily P Cox, born in England in 1910 and 1914. (CAd,S, M,483s,542uvw,ILd)

John had married Mahalia Clementine Etta Parks about 1867 when she was age 19. She was born in Claiborne Co TN in April 1848, daughter of Levi Parks and Susannah Clarkson. In 1885 they lived at Prairie and at Union, Davis Co. Perhaps the state census had picked them up after they moved from one town to another. Living with them in 1885 at Prairie was Susan Parks, age 77 (born 1808 in TN). This was Clementine’s mother. The 1885 census for Union did not show Susan Parks, but instead included a Monroe family.

In 1900 John and Clementine were living at Dayton, Sheridan Co WY. John claimed he ws an invalid then, and was age 54; Clementine was working as a servant. In 1910 John and Clementine were still at Dayton, but he was apparently healthier; he was then a rancher. Their 11 year old grandson John F Cox lived with them in 1910. the boy was born in SD. In 1920, now in their 70s, they were in Powder River Co WY, and 18 year old grandson Clifford Cox lived with them. He was born in WY. Clementine was a widow by 1925, living at Bloomfield, IA with her brother Levi Parks. John no doubt died in WY in the early 1920s. Clementine was living alone at Bloomfield in 1930. She and John had two children, both at Union, Davis Co, and both still alive in 1910-*

                    e.    Jack E Cox, b 1908 in MT. (1281v,660w)

Although Minnie claimed she had five children, with just four still alive in 1910, there was a grandson, Clifford Cox, who lived with Minnie’s parents in 1920. In Minnie’s home in 1910 all children other than Clifford were shown. Hence, this Clifford must have been a son of a brother of Walter Cox, and that brother had married Minnie’s sister. (JY,W,483s, IAs,1281v,660w)

             2.   Florence Cox, b 1883. She may have actually been a son, or else married a Mr Cox. See the note following her brother Walter’s biography. (W,IAs)

Richard East was living in Elizabeth City, VA on 16 February 1623, and died in 1624. He was buried in Elizabeth City. (M88)

Richard East first started appearing in Henrico Co records on 11 September 1732 when James Pirant sold 290 acres next to Chickahominy Swamp in Henrico Co to Isaac Winston for £100. Richard East was a witness to this sale. William East [E4b3] also lived next to this swamp about this time, as did various Woodson families. On 2 October 1740 “Richard East of St Pauls Parish, Hanover Co,” traded to John Kirsie of same, for 79 acres of land on Chickahominy Swamp next to Thomas Baughan and Richard East, a plantation of 100 acres on the branches of Deep Run next to William North , William Randolph, and Abraham Childers, on a branch called Old House Branch. So these two land sales tell us that Richard had moved north to neighboring Hanover Co between 1732 and 1740. But on 3 August 1745, “Richard East of County & Parish of Henrico” sold 116 acres in Henrico Parish on Stoney Run to William Ellis of Henrico Parish for £30. Richard’s wife Elizabeth relinquished her dower for this sale. Richard was now living back in Henrico Co. And a Henrico Co court order of early 1737 mentioned “Richard East and Elizabeth his wife.” So we know he was married by then to Elizabeth. The Henrico County Parish Vestry records show that Richard lived in the Second Precinct.

On 31 August 1745 Richard East of Henrico Co bought 50 acres at the head of Deep Run from Thomas Smith. This Thomas, two days later, sold another 164 neighboring acres for £23. And on 7 October, for £10, Richard sold 150 acres to Robert Childrers, land bounded by the lands of Michael Holland, Meridith’s branch, Blackband’s corner, and Obediah Smith. On 5 April 1747 Richard East of Henrico Parish and Co sold 100 acres on a branch of DXeep Run called Drinking Hole branch to Thomas Pass for £5. On this same date Richard also sold another 100 acres on the south side of Deep Run for £5 to Alexander Padason.       Richard Sim East [E19a9b], son of James M East and Lucinda A Duke, was born in September 1848 in Randolph Co AL. He grew up in Randolph Co and in Chambers Co after his father died. It was probably in Chambers Co where he married Georgia _____ about 1867. She was born in AL in 1850. They weren’t found in 1870, but in 1880 they were living in Chambers Co. Georgia must have died in the early 1880s for Richard was found living in Chambers Co in 1900 with a new wife, Sarah D _____. He married her in 1883. She was born in AL in January 1850. They had one child who died before 1900 and they lived in Chambers Co where Richard was a druggist at Bethlehem. Sarah apparently died soon after 1900 because Richard and his third wife Callie Belle _____ were married about 1903 and were living in Chambers Co. Richard, then using his middle name, was still a druggist. Callie was born in AL in 1882. Richard died in the 1910s, after three children with Callie.       Richard Templeton East [E4b2a2e5], son of Thomas C East and Matilda Watson, was born in July 1845 at Chatham, Pittsylvania Co VA. In 1870 he was the eldest child still living at home with his parents. Richard married Isabelle Anderson on 20 December 1870 in Pittsylvania Co. She was born in Pittsylvania Co in November 1847 close to Chatham, daughter of Demarcus “Mark” Anderson and Mary Smith. As a girl, living with her parents, she was Isabella with an A at the end of her name; as she became an adult, her name became Isabel or Isabelle, without the A ending Richard and Isabelle lived at Staunton and had five children by 1880, ten by 1900 with nine still alive. In order to provide an education for his children, he donated land for a schoolhouse, called the East Schoolhouse. His daughter Emma became a teacher there. Richard died in the 1910s and Isabelle lived with her son Joseph and daughter Daisy in the Staunton area. All the children were born in Pittsylvania Co-*

a.    Nellie K “Willie” East, b Dec 1871 (called Willie in 1900 and 1920, Nellie on other census records), married George Dudley Smith in Pittsylvania Co on 11 January 1894 and lived at Staunton River Twp in Pittsylvania Co close to her parents for the first few years until soon after April 1910 when they moved to Altavista, Campbell Co. George was in the 1910 censuses of both counties that year; on 29 April he was a roomer living next to Nellie’s brothers in Campbell Co, and on April 15 he and Nellie and their children were at Staunton River in Pittsylvania Co. So apparently he was getting a home ready for them in Campbell Co in the month of April. George was born in VA in December 1872, son of George and Eliza Smith. He claimed he was age 21 when he married Willie, so if that was correct, he was born in 1874. George D ran a livery stable in 1910. He and Willie had ten children, the first nine born at Staunton River, Pittsylvania Co VA-*

She was born in VA in 1893. When he registered for the draft in September 1918, Luther named his mother (“Mrs Neller East”) as his closest relative, not his wife. Luther ran a livery stable in addition to farming, but after they moved to Altavista in the 1920s, he became a taxi driver. f.    David Taswell East, b 15 April 1881 at Hurt, Pittsylvania Co VA, was named after his mother’s brother. David moved to Roberts, Jefferson Co ID by September 1918. He married Mary Dancy Payne about 1914 and in 1930 they lived with her parents at South Nampa, Canyon Co. She was born in Monroe Co TN in March 1884, daughter of Floyd Lafayette Payne and Mary Elizabeth Saffles, and died in Canyon Co ID in November 1943. David claimed he was born in 1881 on his WW I draft records, but 1882 for Social Securty Retirement records. He died in October 1971 at Nampa. They had no children. Taswell’s cousin George Cabbel Parsons [E4b2a2e3d] had also moved to Roberts, ID. (M,27nqu,694f)

Ben’s cousin John Carter lived with him and Elsie in the winter of 1919-1920 at Nanpa, Canyon Co ID. Since Ben and Elsie’s son Willard was born in VA, it is likely that cousin Carter came back to ID with them in the summer or fall of 1919. (M,Z,27u, 694w,25f)

i.    Daisy F M East, b 28 Jul 1891 (she claimed she was born in 1889 for Social Security records), died at Altavista, Campbell Co in October 1971 where her brother Ben and sister Nellie lived in 1930. (Z,27uv)

Robert East, Robert Povall, Thomas Povall (all made their "X"), and Woodson and Samuel Trotman appraised the estate of the late Daniel Price in Henrico Co VA. Price died on 1 April 1692, so Robert was likely born by the 1660s or before. (M15)

Robert East [E14c] probably was a son of James East Sr and Ellphan _____ of Oglethorpe Co GA. (DM)

Robert East [E14d2], son of James East Jr and Mary Edwards, was born about 1792 in Oglethorp Co GA. He fought in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. The New Orleans battles took place during the months of December 1814 to January 1815. This would put Robert’s probable birth date in the early 1790s in Oglethorpe Co GA. He was not at home with his parents in 1820 and 1830. There was a Madison Co IL marriage between Robert C East and Hannah Furley on 11 November 1840, but this marriage was with the elder Robert’s nephew, son of his brother Henry Tate East [E14d1].       Robert East [E4b2a5h3], son of Grief Edward East and Sarah E Walker, was born in June 185_ in Halifax Co VA, and died soon after. He must have died because his parents had another child named Robert Clifton East born 23 March 1853 in Halifax Co, and there is a four year gap between Robert Clifton East’s birth and brother Beverly East, born in September 1849. The birth record of the first Robert is hard to read, and the day of the month and the complete year cannot be read. (SS)

Robert East [E7d6h], son of Daniel East and Sarah Carraway of Caldwell Co KY, was born 14 July 1855 in Trigg Co KY. (M92)

When he registered for the WW I draft, he signed his name Robert Marion East, but for the WW II draft, he said his middle inital was only that, not a middle name. In 1920 they were at Fountain Creek, Iroquois Co and he worked at a grain elevator. Lula was born at Mill Springs, Wayne Co in September 1889, daughter of John Henry Vaughn (30Aug1856KY) and Hannah E Hutchinson (01Oct 1859KY). In 1942 Robert worked for the WPA and lived at Clermont, OH. They had three sons by 1920; he apparently had no children with his first wife-*

He grew up in Giles Co and married Charlotte B Mitchell on 5 June 1841 in Tishomingo Co MS, and in 1852 married Harriet W King after Charlotte died on 30 May 1850. Soon afterwards he and his children were living in Tishomingo Co with his sister Susan and her husband. In 1857 Robert and Harriet and the children were living in Lawrence Co AR. Harriet was born in AL about 1833. Robert was a farmer. In 1865 he enlisted in the Confederacy at Powhatan, AR and served in Company G, 45th AR Cavalry. He was captured by the Union forces and imprisoned, but was paroled at Jacksonport (IL?) on 6 May 1865.

Robert A East [E14d1i5], son of Archibald East and Nancy Colter, was born 26 November 1860 in Washington Co IL. In 1900 he was married and living next door to his sister Amanda in Washington Co. Robert’s wife was Margaret A Hildebrandt, born in 25 October 1868 in IL. Margaret’s father was from Germany and her mother from IL. This was a second marriage for both of them. Margaret’s first husband was Thomas Samuel Maxwell, married 30 October 1889 at Elkton, Washington Co; he died 24 June 1890 at Oakdale in Washington Co. Robert’s first marriage took place in Randolph Co on 9 November 1882 with Anna Hutchison. (Was she Ann S Hutchison, born in 1863 in IL, daughter of Daniel Hutchison and Nancy _____?) His marriage with Margaret was in 1894. Margaret claimed that she had four children by 1900, and all four were still living. Her son Russell L Maxwell (born in December 1890) from her first marriage lived with them, so the three youngest children with Robert in 1900 make the four children she had.

Robert and Margaret and all their children moved to central CA in the 1900s, and in 1910 they were found at Modesto. He was a dairy farmer there. When he gave his mother’s birthplace, he said Ireland. In 1920 they lived at Santa Cruz, and in 1930 they were back at Modesto. He died at Modesto on 10 March 1945 and Margaret died there on 9 June 1959. All children born after Charles were from Robert’s second marriage. He had five, six counting his step-son, and the first five were born in IL-*

a.    Charles A East, b 15 Sep 1883, lived at Modesto, CA in 1910 and worked for a creamery, making butter. In 1920, still at Modesto, he was a postal clerk, and in 1930 he was a grocer. He had married Fanny Pearl Blue in 1905. She was a daughter of a Mr Blue and a Ms Johnson (death record info), and was born 2 August 1890 in IN. When their daughter Clara died, her death record said that her mother was a Ms Hilderbrand, and of course her father was a Mr East. This conflicts with the information on Clara’s mother’s death record. Charles died in San Diego Co on 17 March 1967. Charles and Fanny had two children, both born at Modesto, CA-*

      1.   Clarabelle East, b 23 Nov 1906. Her name was Clarabelle on the birth record, but Clara Bell on her death record. She married a Mr Nelson in the 1920s at Modesto, and lived there. Clara died at Modesto on 1 October 1985. (CAbd, 849vw)

      2.   Raymond E G East, b 14 Apr 1908, died at Reedley, Fresno Co CA on 18 September 1999. (Z,849vwf) (CAd,218u, 849vwf)

b.   Russell L East, b Dec 1890, was actually Russell L Maxwell, Robert East’s step-son. Russell used the East name after 1900. He was not found after 1910. (218u,849v)

c.    Frederick Oliver East, b 7 Feb 1895 at Tilden, Randolph Co IL. In June 1917 he lived at Santa Cruz, CA and was a dairyman at Boulder Creek. In 1920 he was a fruit farmer near San Lorenzo, Santa Cruz Co. He was not married in June 1917, but he did marry in 1920 to Mrs Elsie I Pike. Elsie was born in CA in 1894. In 1930 Fred and Elsie were living at Modesto near his brother Charles, and was a grocery store clerk (in Charles’ store?). Fred died at Los Angeles on 30 December 1956. On his death record, it was stated that his mother was a Ms Hilderbrandt. This is what Fred’s niece Clara’s death record said for Clara’s mother, not grandmother. Fred’s sister Minnie’s death certificate also had a similar name. By 1930 Fred and Elsie had no children of their own, but she did have two from her first marriage: Iona M Pike, born in September 1916 in CA, and Bobby D Pike, born 1920 in CA (he claimed born in 1921 in the 1930 census). d.   Vera East, b 10 Nov 1896, was not married by the end of 1919 and lived with her parents at Santa Cruz, CA. She was the proprietor of an ice cream shop. Vera died 27 March 1928. (W,218u,849v,850w)

e.    Minnie Irene East, b 16 May 1900, grew up in central CA, and married Herbert Lee Hartman there about 1919. He was born at Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz Co CA on 5 December 1894, son of Janie Hartman from Canada and Mary E Call. Herbert was a grocery store clerk. They at first lived with Minnie’s parents at Santa Cruz. Herbert died at San Francisco on 18 August 1951. This marriage ended in divorce after two sons, and Minnie then married James Reilly in the late 1920s. He was born in IL in 1891, and they lived at Cloverdale, Sonoma Co. He was a truck driver for the state highway department. Minnie died in Alameda Co CA on 28 April 1957. Her mother’s maiden name was Hillibrandt on her death record. Minnie’s two sons were both born at Santa Cruz-*

      1.   James H Hartman, b 29 Apr 1920. He enlisted in the US Army at San Francisco on 25 July 1940, intending to be stationed at Panama Canal. He was married at that time. James died at Stockton on 5 September 2003. (M,Z, CAb,80f)

      2.   Robert L Hartman, b 14 Nov 1924, died in Contra Costa Co CA on 27 July 1961. (CAbd,80f) (M,CAd, 218u, 849v,850w,80f)
