David later married Valerie Ann Sheets on 14 February 1987, but between wives he had a romance with Sheila Campana, and they produced a son who kept his mother’s family name. Valerie was born in Ventura Co on 11 November 1952, daughter of a Mr Sheets and a Ms Haigh. He married Minerva Jane Box on 19 June 1863 in Polk Co; the marriage record mistakenly says her name was Margaret J Box. Minerva was born in MO in September 1846. She was also known by her middle name, and was a daughter of Pleasant M Box and Rebecca Northern. David died between 1878 and 1880, and in 1880 Minerva and her three sons were living in Christian Co MO. In 1900 Minerva was living with her son Weldon in Christian Co. David and Minerva Jane had at least three children- a. Weldon Sidney East, b Feb 1868 b. Charles Edward East, b 31 Jul 1874 c. Minerva had remarried in the late 1880s to a Mr Harris, who was from IL. He died in the 1890s, leaving Minerva with a fourth son, Jasper Harris, born in March 1888 in Christian Co. And in 1870 in Polk Co, living with Minerva’s father was Joseph L Foster, age 14 and born in MO. See the biographies of David’s brother Bailey East [E4c6c3g3] and sister Elizabeth Jane East.[E4c6c3g7]. (L,MF,W,JG, 41n,42qm,97su) David C East [E13a1k3], son of Anderson R East and Mary A Goings, was born in 1833 in OH. He was named after grandfather East’s mother. David lived in Delaware Co IN since the mid-1840s, and married Mary J Skinner in Delaware Co on 19 January 1859. She probably died within four years because David married Mary L Burnett in Delaware Co on 14 December 1862. David was a merchant. Mary J was born in OH in 1838. In 1870 they lived at Anderson, Madison Co IN and he was a dry goods merchant there. In 1880, still living at Anderson, he was a farmer. Mary L was born in OH in 1845 (age 21 in 1870). David died by 1910 because Mary L was living alone at Anderson, next door to her son Charles, and also next door to her brother-in-law Thomas S East. Mary L and David had nine children, all living in 1910 and all born in IN-* a. Charles W East, b May 1864, married Laura L Smith on 23 May 1883 in Madison Co. and in 1910 they lived at Anderson, Madison Co next door to his widowed mother and uncle Thomas S East. Laura was born in IN in October 1867 (age 36 in 1910) . Charles was a hardware merchant at Anderson. There is a Madison Co marriage record between Charles W East and Amelia Perry on 27 March 1881, when Charles would have been almost age 17. Charles and Laura had three children by 1910, all born at Anderson, Madison Co IN-* 1. May East, b Nov 1883 and probably married by 1910. (729uv) 2. They had two children by 1910, both born at Anderson-* 1. Mary J Walker, b 1902 (729v) 2. Daniel E Walker, b 1906 (729v) (M,729sumv) (781knmq, 729rs) David C East [E11b], son of William East from VA and Drucilla ____ from KY, was born in 1837 in Centre Twp, Wayne Co IN and grew up in DeWitt Co IL. He married Laura W Laborance in DeWitt Co IL on 21 August 1872. They lived at Howard, Bates Co MO in 1880. Laura was born in Sangamon Co IL in September 1854, daughter of Adam Laborance from Germany and Charlotte R Dodge from NY, and was a sister of Charlotte Laborance (born NY in late 1849) who married David’s brother Henry on the same day. David died by 1900 and Laura remained in Bates Co, at West Point until 1900, but in 1902 she remarried, and within the next eight years she moved to Seattle, WA. Her children and her brother-in-law Rush had all moved to the Pacific Northwest also. Laura’s next husband was Edgar W Swan, a house carpenter. He was born in IL in 1842. This was his second marriage also. Laura and Edgar were not found after 1920, so probably both died at Seattle in the 1920s. She and David had five children-* 1. Laurence Justin East, b 23 Sep 1874 2. Edward E East, b Feb 1877 3. Anna D East, b Jun 1882 4. Lottie P East, b May 1885 5. Charles D East, b 22 Dec 1890 Adam Laborance, born 1812 in Ireland, lived with his wife Charlotte R Dodge at Bethlehem, Albany Co NY in 1850. Their children then were Rachael, age 3, Charlotte, age 9/12, plus older children with a Capron family name from Charlotte’s prior marriage. Adam and Charlotte apparently moved to central IL in the early 1850s with their (then) three Laborance children (son John was born in Albany Co in 1851), where they had daughters Laura and Annie Laborance. Illinois marriage records for the Laborance daughters consistently showed that the mother’s name was Charlotte R Dodge. Adam died by the late 1860s and his widow Charlote then married for a third time, using the name Charlotte R Laborance, to Jacob Willis in Sangamon Co IL on 29 June 1869. And as often happens when a parent marries again and there are prior children involved, the prior children choose to live with elder siblings instead of with the new step-parent; daughter Charlotte Laborance, in 1870, lived with her half-sister Catherine Capron and Catherine’s husband Jacob Parlier. Two years later Charlotte Laborance married Edward H East. Charlotte Dodge’s daughter Annie E Laborance married Charles V Durgy in Sangamon Co IL on 17 February 1875. Son John Laborance married Caroline Lyman Pursell in Sangamon Co on 21 September 1886. No IL marriage record for Rachael, the eldest Laborance child, was found. Of the children from Charlotte Dodge’s first marriage, Catherine Capron married Jacob Parlier in Sangamon Co on 14 Apr 1858. About the country of birth of Adam Laborance: The 1850 census of Albany Co NY said he was from Ireland. Children John (born 1851), Laura (born 1854), and Annie (born 1856) in later census records show that their father was born in Germany, and John in 1880 and 1920 said his father was from France. Since Adam died when the children were probably no older than young teens, their memories may not be accurate. Actually, “Adam Laborentz” age 20, arrived New Your Harbor on 16 October 1833 on the ship Albany The port of departure was Harve (Hamburg), but Adam’s birth place was Bavaria, which is now a state in southern Germany (where Munich is). After being in the USA where German pronunciation and spelling is rarely ever correct, the name got corrupted to Laborance. Edgar Swan had a son from his first marriage: Fred Burton Swan, born 28 May 1876 in IL and lived at Seattle from at least 1920. He died there 11 February 1942. He was a shoe salesman. (WAd,M, 231R,52k, 167m,685nqm,745su,731vw) David Clarkson East [E13a1f], son of James East and Martha Clarkson, was born 12 February 1788 in VA, probably Nelson Co. David married Elizabeth Beard of Rockbridge Co VA. She was born about 1795, daughter of William Beard and Mary Sprout. (M92,L) David Franklin East [E14d1f10], son of David East and Nancy Minerva Paul, was born 3 August 1865 in Washington Co IL, and died 15 January 1953. He married Nancy Anna Margaret Boyle on 17 October 1895 in Randolph Co, and afterwards married Elizabeth Wylie. Elizabeth was born in 1854 in IL. Nancy was born in February 1872 in IL of Irish parents. In 1900 they lived at Coulterville, Randolph Co and in 1910 they lived at Tilden, Randolph Co. Then in 1920 and 1930 they were at Clinton, DeKalb Co. Franklin was a street crossing flagman for the railroad in 1930. He and Nancy had five children, the first four born in Randolph Co IL-* a. David enlisted in the Confederacy at Smithville, AR and was a private in Company E, Nave's Battalion. He had blue eyes, dark hair, and was five feet five inches tall. He first married Amanda H Anderson on 20 October 1867 in Lawrence Co AR, and in 1880 they were living there at Spring River, where he was a woodworker. Amanda was born in TN about 1845, and died 1 May 1884 in Lawrence Co. David married Hester Anne Helms, his second wife, on 25 July 1884. She was born on Christmas day 1866, daughter of Wyatt Helms, and died on her birthday in 1900, at the birth of twins who also died. She and David had 10 children. He married his third wife, Janie Clementine McPike, on 21 July 1902. She was born 1 July 1884 in AR, daughter of Addy Norm McPike and Sarah Elizabeth Baker. Janie died at Dinuba CA on 9 January 1970; she is buried in Walnut Ridge Cemetery at Walnut Ridge, AR. They had 11 children. David died 4 July 1929 at Alicia, AR and is buried one mile east of his home in the countryside. His will is on record in Lawrence Co. After he died, Janie and her younger children lived at Marion, next door to daughter Eva. Many of the following birth dates were recorded and passed on to heirs, but years after the births happened. Otherwise, if birth dates were recorded as they happened, such as in a bible record as the event happened, we would have the dates accurate to the day. But many dates must have been done from memory since only the year was written down for most of the older children, and memories sometimes fail. In all, David and his three wives had 32 children- 1. Mary V East, b 1868 2. child East, died young 3. Abbie M East, b Sep 1871 4. Thomas East, b 1874 5. Joseph Henry East, b 6 Dec 1875 6. child East, died young 7. Felix James East, b 15 Sep 1877 8. He married Mary Collicott Griffith in Ripley Co on 25 February 1847. She apparently was married before because there were two older children in their home in 1850 (using the East name). Mary was born in IN in 1822, daughter of Wesley Griffith. In 1850 David lived next door to his widowed mother and younger siblings. He and Mary had a son-* a. George Alexander East, b Dec 1849 (507n) Mary’s children from her first marriage were Emily Griffith, born 1838, and William Anderson Griffith, b 1841. (W,507kn) David William East [E4c1a6d1d7], son of Thomas Benton East and Mary Shields, was born on 23 November 1882 at Marshfield, Webster Co MO. He was named as a son in his father's 1897 pension application. In September 1918 he was a farmer in Kaufman Co TX and had married Ada Mae Clair in 1904. Ada was born in MO in 1882. David died 1 February 1953 at Springfield, MO of heart failure, and was a widower for the second time when he died. David was buried at Modesto, CA. The informant for his death certificate was Walter H East of Springfield; Walter did not know the name of his mother, yet she was alive when Walter was age 9. In 1910 he and his family lived in Haskell Co TX, and in 1920 David, Ada, and their four children lied in Kaufman Co TX. Apparently each time Ada was to give birth, they mad a quick trip back to MO for the birth. In the 1940s David worked at French Camp, San Joaquin Co CA but lived at Salida, Stanislaus Co. Their children were all born in MO-* a. Virgil Thomas East, b 17 Aug 1905, grew up in TX, lived at Modesto, CA in the 1940s, and died at Pittsburg, Contra Costa, CA on 7 March 1982. George was a carpenter and they lived in Boyle Co KY (two counties north of Adair Co). He was born in 1821 in KY, son of Samuel Latimer and Mary Daugherty. From the birth places of their children, it appears that George and Deborah moved to Palestine, Anderson Co TX in 1850 after the census was taken in KY. George was a mechanic at Palestine in 1860. He served in Company K, 15th Texas Cavalry during the Civil War on the Confederate side, but the scant military records for him do not indicate that he died during nthe war. Deborah was a widow in 1880 and was living with her two youngest sons at Palestine, Anderson Co TX.; in 1900 she lived with her daughter Mary at Houston (and was called a “daughter-in-law” to her 66 year old son-in-law). George must have died at Palestine, Anderson Co TX soon after 1860; in 1870 she was woreking as a seamstress at in Anderson Co, and was by then without a husband. The Houston City Directory of the mid-1890s showed “Debora A Latimer, widow of George W” and she was living with Joseph W Davis. Joseph W Davis, born in KY in 1842, lived next door to Deborah’s daughter Mary at Houston in 1900. George and Deborah had four children by 1850, then seven by 1860-* a. Mary C Latimer, b Jul 1845. She married William L Davis in 1870 and they lived at Houston, TX. William was born in (Lafayette Co?) MO in February 1834 (or in TX per 1880 census). Their two sons were born at Houston-* 1. Warren Latimer, b 1851 at Palestine, Anderson Co TX, was age 29 and a grocer in 1880 at Palestine. In 1860 the census shows him to be son D B, age 8, and in 1870 he was Warren, age 10. In 1900, still at Palestine, he was age 38 and born in September 1861. (1031qrsu) f. G W Latimer, b 1857 at Palestine, Anderson Co TX, was James M in the 1870 census, age 13. (1031qr) g. (AN) (K,AN,47q, 245rs,252u) Dicie East [E19a1], daughter of Stephen East and Desa, was born in 1802 in Spartanburg Co SC and grew up there and in Jackson Co GA. She married James Loggins Jr in 1825 at Pickersville, SC. James was born about 1799 and grew up in South Carolina, a son of Samuel Loggins who also moved to GA when James and Dicie did. James also used the name John and James Logans in order to avoid the federal troops who were always gathering up stray Cherokee who hadn’t already been captured and forced to OK. James served in the South Carolina militia during the War of 1812. (This war took place during the years 1812 thru 1814.) In his application for a veteran's pension he described a march from SC to Mobile, AL where he said he was discharged. When gold was discovered in GA in 1828, people from all parts of the US began migrating to the Georgia Blue Ridge in what was the first US gold rush (these prospectors were known as 29ers, the first use of a term that would later be applied to the 49ers of California). This is about the time that many of the South Carolina Loggins families moved into GA. James and Dicie were among them. They settled in what was then Habersham Co (later White Co). When the Cherokee were being removed, Dicie’s father and two of his sons, Pinckney and Zealous, moved to Alabama with a band of Indians led by a chief named "King" Solomon Ray. When a Cherokee married, the man would become part of the band to which his wife belonged. Dicie never heard from her father again after his eviction from Hall Co, and his move to Troup Co in western GA. Dicie was never enrolled as an Indian; her husband refused to allow her to admit that she was Indian, and in 1851 this caused a permanent rift between them. He felt that having her name on a government roll would mean being forcibly taken away like the group that were moved west. Later, when benefits were made available to the Eastern Cherokee, it was impossible for her descendents to prove connection to the tribe. Her grandson, John Loggins, diligently tried to provide proof of his Indian ancestry. His Cherokee claim file is filled with sworn testimonies from people who had personally known Dicie and knew of her Cherokee parents. One such affidavit states that Dicie wanted to get on the rolls but her husband, James, would not allow it. He said he was in enough trouble with his family for marrying an Indian and he didn’t want to cause more. The testimony goes on to state “and there was no more peace between them.” They lived in Hall Co GA two doors from Dicie’s father in 1830 and next to James’ father, and in 1840 were still in Hall Co. In 1840 their close neighbors were three other Loggins families, the John Miller family, and the Tailor Armour (written as “Talor Armer”) family. After many of Dicie’s siblings moved to Troup Co GA and to eastern AL, she and James settled on a ridge above the Chestatee River south of Three Sisters Mountain in Lumkin Co. They lived in Habersham Co in 1850 and in White Co GA in 1860; these are the three counties north of Hall Co GA. (White Co was formed in 1857 from the western half of Habersham Co.) James was born in SC in 1799, and was age 20 to 29 in 1830, age 30 to 39 in 1840, age 44 in 1850, age 60 in 1860, age 80 in 1870, age 81 in 1880. His elder daughters also weren’t very consistent when they gave their ages to the census takers. Hence, we can only estimate the birth dates of many of the children. In the 1830 census the children were one boy and one girl, both under the age of 5; in 1840 the children were the boy, now age 10 to 14, a daughter age 10 to 14, with two new daughters age 5 to 9, and the two youngest daughters under age 5. That made six children. By the time the 1850 census was taken, only the daughters remained at home, and son William lived nearby with his wife. In 1860 two daughters remained at home, while the other four children had married and lived on their own. It appears that the ages of daughters shown in the 1850 census gives us the most information, but the 1860 census actually gives us their more (accurate) names: S (Sarah) was age 20; R (Rebecca) was age 18, E (Elizabeth) was age 16, N (Nancy) was age 14, and E (Eliza) was age 12. At home in 1860 were Sarah and Rebecca, which gives us the names found for the two initials S & R in the 1850 census; Sarah was now age 25, and Rebecca was age 24. Nancy was age 21 living with her husband in 1860; in 1870 her age was 24, ten years under the truth, and she lived next door to her parents in White Co. Her sisters Sarah, age 35, Rebecca, age 33, and Elizabeth, age 31 were again living with their parents. Dicie died in Walton Co GA on 22 November 1905. They had at least five children, all born in GA-* a. girl Loggins, born about 1826, died in the 1830s in Hall Co GA. This girl is not Sarah nor Rebecca since those two sisters consistantly gave their ages over the census years to show both were born in the 1830s. This was an elder daughter born in the late 1820s, according to the 1830 census. Since Dicie and James didn’t marry until 1825, and son William was born in 1828, it would be likely that a child would have been born before William. Hence, this girl must have been born in the late 1820s, and died in the 1830s. (JY,250jk) b. William Pinkney Loggins, b 5 Oct 1828 c. Sarah Loggins, b 1832 d. Rebecca Loggins, b 7 Dec 1833 e. By 12 September 1876 she had not married since she was called Emma East in her father's estate records then. (M92,BP,JA, 59r) Drury East [E4c3a3d], son of Isham East and Mary Eades, was born 30 March 1789, died in Grayson Co VA on 18 March 1820. He was not found on any 1820 census and probably had no children. He lived in Grayson Co as an adult. Drury wrote his will on 8 March 1820, so he probably knew he was going to die soon. His grandmother Fanny East and brother William East were two of the executors of Drury’s estate in April 1820. His estate was finally settled on 15 February 1826 at the home of Eli Cock. At that time William East and Thomas Baldwin were the acting executors. In Drury’s will, he named George W Hill, his sister “Elizabeth East,” and “Lusinda Eads.” Drury also declared his “brother” William East and his “sister” Elizabeth East as Executors. There was a Drury East who supplied liquor for the estate sale of William Moore in Patrick Co VA, and was paid for the liquor on 15 December 1825; the actual estate sale was on 28 June 1819. William East was also at that sale. In the November 1821 court in Patrick Co, still concerning the William Moore estate, the accounting shows that the estate received “Rent of place where Drury East lived that was called McCCraw’s place to Drury East.” This short sentence implied that Drury East no longer lived there (or no longer lived). (W,1043p,30p) Drury East [E4c3a3a3], son of John East and Mary Johnson, was born in Patrick Co VA in 1815 (age 30 in 1850, 45 in 1860, 53 in 1870). Drury was probably a brother of Elizabeth East, born 1812, who married George Martin Nelson and of Isom East, born 1817. All three of these East people were born in VA, lived for a while in NC, moved to Wythe Co in the 1840s, and lived there into the 1850s or later. Drury had married Nancy _____ in 1842. Nancy was born in NC in 1824, and since their eldest child was born in NC, they probably married in NC. They stayed in NC until about 1844, then moved to Wythe Co. Their son John attended the same school where children of his sister Elizabeth East attended, and they were all in the same classroom in 1851. Because the name Drury is relatively rare, and it appears that only descendants of Isham East [E4c3a3] and wife Mary Eads had sons with the Drury East name, then this Drury of Wythe Co would probably be one of Isham’s descendants. In 1860 Drury East (spelled Drewey East) and his family were living at Madison, Morgan Co IN. They had probably moved there in the early 1850s since the school records of son John were no longer found in Wythe Co after 1851. Drury died in the 1870s, probably in Morgan Co, and in 1880 Nancy was living at Indianapolis and was taking in laundry to make a living. She and Drury had at least five children-* a. John H East, b 1843 in NC, spent his childhood years in Wythe Co VA, then moved to Madison, IN when he was about 10 years old, and grew up there. (377r,383s) Interesting note: When the list of children in school teacher Robert B Saferight’s classroom was made in November 1851, they were not shown alphabetically, and hence Elizabeth East’s and George Martin Nelson’s two children were listed just before Drury’s son John East, as if they were all from the same large family. In March 1854 Elizabeth’s son Thomas East was shown in the class list, but John East, Drewry’s son was not. In any case, since they were all in the same classroom in 1851, they probably all lived in the same neighborhood. In 1900 Edgar was a boarder in his future mother-in-law’s home at Philadelphia, PA, and living in the same home was Edgar’s future wife Mary, who was at that time a widow (Mrs Mary Atkinson). Edgar East was then a clerk. It does not appear that Mary and Edgar had children; she had none from her first marriage. It appears that she had died by 1925 since Edgar took an ocean cruise alone on the ship Fort St George to Bermuda. He arrived back at the port of New York on 13 August 1925. On the ship’s register he gave his home address as a hotel at Richmond, VA. (8su) Edith East [E4c6d], daughter of Joseph East and Mary _____ of Louisa Co VA, was born by 1768 when her father write his will, but she apparently had no adult children at the time. This indicates that she was born no sooner than around 1730. Actually, she was born about 1742 in Louisa Co and married Thomas Peers on 22 November 1759 in Goochland Co. She received her father’s Negro man Harry in his 1758 will. As part of the will, Joseph said that if Edith dies with children under age, then Thomas Peers shall become owner of Harry until the children become of age. (731wf) (W,M,94u,539v, 731wf) Edward East Sr [E4c], son of Thomas East Sr of Henrico Co VA and Dorothy Thomas, was born perhaps around 1675; he rented 150 acres in Henrico Co in 1705 from her Majesty the Queen of England. Edward was a witness in Henrico Co to the will of John Woodson on 25 November 1715. Edward left a will in Henrico Co dated 8 August 1734; the will went to probate on 2 February 1735, thus indicating that he died a few days before then. In the will he named six children. Witnesses to the will were William Porter Jr, John Porter, and Anne Porter. Edward could not sign his name and made an X. His wife was named the executrix, but was not named. In the will he gave: to son William, 1 shilling; to son Edward, “part of my land living on t\he north side of the run I live on;” to son Isham “the other part of my land, and negro after his mother’s death. the first child of above negro to my daughter Mary;” to my two sons Tarlton and Joseph, the “rest of the estate after the death of their mother.” Witnesses to the will were William Porter Jr, John Porter, and Ann Porter. The value of Edward's estate was £23/3/6. There is a court record in Henrico Co of 3 March 1755 stating “we have assigned Elizabeth East, widow and relic of Edward East, dec’d, her full third of his lands.” There were three Edward East men who could have had a wife living in 1755. But since Edward East dec’d had a wife alive 20 years after he died, then this widow Elizabeth East may have been quite a bit younger. She was not a widow of Edward East [E3a] since we know that his wife was Mary Hobson. And she could not have been a widow in 1736 of Edward Jr since he was living in March 1740 and was a member of Henrico Co Parish (William East was also mentioned at this time in the parish records). So widow Elizabeth East mentioned must have been the widow of Edward East Sr. The Henrico Parish Vestry Book records show that a disputed land boundary between Elizabeth East and Francis Gath was settled on 3 May 1736; Edward East Sr had died between his will date of on 8 August 1734 and when it went to probate on 2 February 1735. Hence, widow Elizabeth was the land owner by this date, otherwise the land would be described as Edward’s land. Edward’s wife was Elizabeth Woodson, daughter of Robert Woodson and Elizabeth Ferris, and was born about 1680. Since Elizabeth and her two eldest sons were members of the Henrico Co Parish, it is likely that most children were also members while they lived in Henrico Co. Her and Edward Sr’s children were- 1. Edward East Jr, b 1690s-1710s 2. William East, b 1690s-1710s 3. Isham East, b 1690s-1710s 4 Mary East, b 1690s-1710s 5. Tarleton East, b 1690s-1710s 6. Joseph East, b 1690s-1710s Other people named in the Henrico Co Parish record books were the neighbors often named in deed records of Edward Sr and Thomas East Sr & Jr. (W,M85,M13,EP,M47,29p) Edward East Jr [E4c1], son of Edward East Sr of Henrico Co VA, was born in the 1690s-1710s in Henrico Co. He owned land near the western run of Turkey Island Creek, land also next to Beverly Randolph and Robert Maddox, on 5 August 1744. Edward was named as an officiating member of Henrico Co Parish on 29 March 1740. Whether he had children is unknown, but there was a younger Edward East in Henrico Co who was born about 1721, so this younger Edward must have been a son of one of the eldest two sons of Edward East Sr and his wife Elizabeth Woodson. (EP,M15, M47,29py) Edward East [E4c1a], probably a son of Edward East Jr of Henrico Co VA, was born about 1721 in Henrico Co. He married Mary Hobson by 1745. She was born about 1725. Edward left a will in Henrico Co dated 9 September 1753 and recorded (after Edward died) on 4 March 1754. In the will he left 50 acres to his son Jesse, and left 50 acres next to Jesse’s inheritance. This land was next to land belonging to Jane Porter. He also named his wife Mary; her two brothers William and Benjamin Hobson were the executors. Witnesses to the will were Jane Porter, Charles Woodson, Robert Maddox, Thomas Jolly, and Sarah Warrener. The value of Edward’s estate was £38/1/0. Edward and Mary had at least two sons. Since he died at an early age, he probably had few children. The two known children are- 1. Jesse East, b abt 1746 2. Benjamin East, b abt 1748 (L,29p) Edward East [E4c3b1f4], son of Asa East and Charity _____, was born in 1836 in IL, but grew up in Lincoln Co MO. He married Phebe Lee Neal in Calhoun Co IL on 18 August 1856 when she was age 15. She also was born in IL, in 1841. (Calhoun Co is the county east of Lincoln Co.) In 1850 the only 9 year old Neal girl in either Lincoln Co and in Calhoun Co was Emily Neil in the Alexis & Rebecca Palmer home (ages 59 and 49, and born in KY and MO). Edward and Phebe had two children by 1860, both born in Lincoln Co- a. Betsy Ann East, b 1858 (46q) b. This Edward East was an oil lease salesmen. His wife Florence was born in MS in 1900, and they had no children by early 1930. In June 1917 he worked at Chattanooga, TN for Southern RR as a carpenter in the Bridge & Building Department, and had a child. He was single then, and lived at Glen Alice (4 miles southwest of Rockwood). His brother Alonzo also worked for the B&B Department. In 1930 Edward lived at Chattanooga, but worked in a candy factory. He was then married to Thelma _____. She was born in 1905 in TN, and was first married in 1923. Edward’s first marriage was in 1917, so it appears that since he was single in June 1917, his first wife must have died at the birth of the child that Edward claimed he had to support in June 1917. His children were all born in TN-* 1. Edward East, b 1917. He said he was age 11 in 1930; if this was correct, then he may have had an older brother who probably died before 1920. (221f) 2. He was a TN politician and judge much of his life, and was a trustee of the University of Nashville and of Vanderbilt University. In 1892 he was the Prohibition candidate for governor of TN, but lost the election, receiving about two percent of the vote. In 1867 (married 32 years in 1900) he married Ida Tennie Horton of MS, widow of Gustavis Ward, a Confederate Soldier, and daughter of Henry C Horton. Ida was born in TN in March 1842. (M77,M92, EE,NL,W,8rsu) Edward Hudson East [E11f], son of William East from VA and Drucilla ____ from KY, was born in October 1845 at Clinton, DeWitt Co IL. He was called Edwin in the 1870 census. He and three siblings had their own home separate from their parents in 1870. They were family #129 at Wapella, DeWitt Co. Their parents were family # 190 and #262 (they were shown in the census twice). Edward H East married Charlotte D Laborance in DeWitt Co on 21 August 1872. This must have been a double wedding since Edward’s brother David also married on this date, to Charlotte’s sister Laura W Laborance. Charlotte was born at Bethlehem, Albany Co NY in December 1849, daughter of Adam Laborance and Charlotte R Dodge. Henry’s wife Charlotte died 2 January 1874 in Bates Co MO (from childbirth?). See the note following David C East’s biography. About 1880 Edward married Hattie Baxter from Trenton, MO and they lived at Victoria, Victoria Co TX, near the central Gulf Coast; Edward raised livestock in TX. Hattie was born in December 1859 in MO. In 1910 they were in Nueces Co, and in Kleberg Co in 1920. (These three counties are near the coast and each county is one or two counties southwest of the prior one.) In 1920 Edward was a retired cattleman living at Dutada with his youngest two children, grandchildren, and ranch workers. Hattie had died within the prior decade. He moved from VA in 1806 to Davidson Co TN. After his father died, when Edward was still a boy, James Carter was Edward’s guardian; this James Carter was one of the administrators of Edward East’s fathers estate. And in 1817 in the settlement of the estate of Samuel Buchanan, Edward H East was given a Negro woman named Lucy. And again, one of the administrators / executors of the Buchanan estate was James Carter. The deceased Samuel Buchanan must have been an uncle of Edwards’s wife. In the 1820s Edward was the guardian for Elizabeth Saunders, a minor orphan. She was left property in her late parents’ will, and on 15 November 1821 Edward H East was in court to account for Miss Saunder’s expenses and inherited properties. He again appeared in court on this matter on 22 March 1822, and on 12 March 1823 and 9 October 1923. Elizabeth Saunders’ late father may have been Francis Saunders since matters of his estate appear in Davidson Co court records during the early 1820s. William Saunders was the executor. Edward was also the executor of the estate of James McBride in on 2 July 1823. Edward married Cecelia Buchanan on 12 October 1812 in Davidson Co. She was a daughter of John Buchanan, and was born in VA about 1791. Cecelia's father obtained from NC a grant of 5,000 acres for Revolutionary War service. It was upon this grant, on a tract on Stone's River, where Edward and Cecelia lived and died. He was a justice of the peace, and beginning in 1853 was chairman of the county court for a number of years. Edward was blind in 1870, living with 18 year old Molly Base, and two servants. She was born in AR in 1854. In 1880 they were living in Nevada Co close to his brother Edmund, and had three children. In 1900 Elias C East and his second wife Queen E _____ (Vaughan?) were living at Texarkana in Miller Co AR. This was also Queen’s second marriage. Elias operated the Texarkana East Funeral Home and Queen was a seamstress. She was born in AR in December 1872 (age 27 in 1900, 40 in 1910, 42 in 1920). Elias died in the 1900s, probably in the early 1900s since he and Queen had just one child before he died. In 1910 “Mrs E C East” was living in Texarkana with her her son, and was an Undertaking Proprietress. (Bowie Co TX census, family 21, second page of Texarkana; their business was within two city blocks of the AR-TX state line, which runs north-south thru town, so her home was always within a short walk, but sometimes switched states.) It also appears that after Elias died, Queen turned their funeral parlor into a dual undertaking parlor - rooming house combination. In 1910 there were nine boarders, including Queen’s widowed sister Mrs Frank Stinnett, who lived with them in 1900. Queen was still alive in September 1918 when her son Jack, on his draft card, named his mother “Mrs E C East” as his nearest living relative. At that time they lived on Vine Street in Texarkana, AR, but in 1910 their boarding house was on Olive St in Texarkana, Bowie Co TX. In 1920 Queen was still living at Texarkana, in TX; she ran a casket making business then. In 1930 at Texarkana, now back in Miller Co AR, she was till in the funeral home business. Elias and Queen had one son, making four children in all for Elias, all born in AR-* a. Elizabeth East, b 1876 (62s) b. Joseph East, b 9 May 1878, died 5 June 1957 in Nevada Co. (MV,62s) c. Jack died at Little Rock in October 1977. (M,Z,91u,102vw) In 1900 thru 1930 Queen’s widowed sister Mrs Frankie Stinnett (or Mrs Frank Stinnett?) lived with Queen There was a 13 November 1892 marriage in Lawrence Co AR between a Frances Vaughan and Mr J F Stinnett. In 1870 Elias and his wife are found in Randolph Co (Louisa PO, census Page No. 47, family number 345). Elias was a member Company 1, 13th Alabama Regiment, CSA. He married F A Cornette Pool about 1867. She was born in AL on 15 August 1842 (gravestone says 1849; she was age 8 in 1850, age 18 in 1860, age 29 in 1870, age 39 in 1880), daughter of Robert C Pool and Margaret _____. In 1880 they lived near Roanoke in Randolph Co, a few doors from his widowed mother and brother Cicero and sister Samantha, and they had four children, all born in Randolph Co. Elias and Cornette moved to TX after 1880 and she died there on 22 May 1898. She was buried in Armour Cemetery West in Limestone Co. Later that year Elias married Nancy A _____, who was born in April 1842 (per gravestone; born April 1846 per 1900 census; born 1843 per 1910 & 1920 census) in TX, and died in TX in 1920; Nancy and Elias were also buried in Armour Cemetery West in Limestone Co, but his gravestone has no dates. He died 11 December 1923 at Coolidge, Limestone Co on pneumonia. Nancy and Elias were living at Amour, Limestone Co TX in 1900, near his children and grandchildren. The children moved to Limestone Co by the mid-1880s since Elias’ grandchildren were born there starting in 1886; when Elias and Cornette moved is unknown, but it was likely about the same time as his children. Since Nancy was age 52 when she married Elias, she had no children. Elias and Cornette’s children were- 1. Beulah East, b 30 Oct 1867 2. Robert Warren Nicholson East, b 7 Apr 1870 3. Elijah was assigned to Captain James C Price’s Company, Lewis’ Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers. In 1870 and 1880 there was an Elijah East living at Oxford, Butler Co OH. He was born in KY about 1790 of VA parents. His wife (then) was 39 year old Jane _____ from SC. This whole family was shown to be Mulatto. Elijah’s first wife was Ellen, but they did not appear to have had children. Elijah lived in Butler Co OH from 1840, but in 1830 an Elijah Eastes was shown living in Estil Co KY. (K,285n) Elisha East [E4b2a8], minor child of Thomas East and Obedience _____ of Pittsylvania Co VA, was a mis-reading of the records, and this person was actually daughter Elizabeth. (EP) Elisha East [E10d], son of William East and Martha _____, was born in VA in 1778 in Halifax Co VA. He was living in Halifax Co in 1820 thru 1850, and probably since birth. In 1820, four doors away, was Archer Farmer, age 26-44. In 1850 Elisha’s wife was Anna _____; her correct name was Hannah Farmer, whom he married in Halifax Co on 17 January 1814. There were no other Elisha East marriages between 1814 and 1850. Witnesses at the marriage were Richard East and Daniel Comer. Hannah was born in VA 17 January 1788. On 14 August 1819 in Halifax Co Elisha sold land in Halifax to Isaac and Sarah D Medley. Again there is an 1844 recorded deed of trust concerning Elisha in Halifax Co, so he lived in that county his whole life. Elisha died in Halifax Co on 6 August 1853 of of dropsy. His death certificate said that his parents were “William and Martha East” and that he was born in Halifax Co, and that his wife was Hannah. The informant for the death certificate was their son “William D East.” Elisha was age 75 when he died, hence born about 1778. They had at least five children, all probably born in Halifax Co VA-* 1. Harriet G East, b 1814, married in 1844 to Archer Moore. See her biography. 2. Nancy T East, b abt 1815, married Thomas H Carlton in 1835. See her biography 3. Obediah F East, b 1817. He was age 23 in the 1850 census; the 1830 and 1840 census had a boy born 1816-1820 in Elisha’s home, and there was no son in 1830 nor in 1840 who was in the 1826-1830 age group. In 1820 the only son was in the Under age 10 age group. Hence, the 1850 age for Obediah must be wrong, and he was likely born in the 1810s, probably in 1817. He was not found after the 1850 census, so had probably died in the 1850s.(26ijkn) 4. William David East, b 3 Jan 1823, married Caroline Frances Moore in 1848. See his biography. 5. John H East, b 1823, died 19 August 1854. (SS,26jkn) Dropsy is an ailment caused by eating the mixture of contaminated mustard oil mixed with argemone oil; its symptoms are acute nausea, vomiting, loose motions, bloated stomach, erythema and swelling of hands and feet. In 1840, there was one male slave in Elisha’s household. The 1820 census showed only four East families in Halifax Co: John, Richard, Nancy, and Elisha. This Richard East must have been one of the two witnesses at Elisha and Hannah’s marriage; he may have been Elisha’s brother since his age was about the same as Elisha’s and he had four children under the age of 10 in 1820. (M92,SS, 26mijkndz) Elisha East [E4c3b1c1], son of Larkin East and Mary Payton, was born in 1829 in Simpson Co KY. She married Harrison Cumbee in Charlotte Co on 2 October 1826. They were living in Charlotte Co in 1830, and by that time had one son. They were not found anywhere in 1840; in Halifax Co in 1840 was a Thomas R Cumby, but at that time he had no sons but had two daughters, and a wife. In 1850 Harrison was a carpenter in Halifax Co, with a young woman named Sarah A Cumbee in his home, age 25, but no wife. If the Joseph Cumbee next door had married, the Sarah with Harrison would have been the right age to be Joseph’s wife. Harrison was born in 1806 in VA and was a carpenter. His wife Eliza was likely born about 1807. Their son was- 1. Joseph Cumbee, b 1827, was a boatman (boat builder) living next door to his father in Halifax Co in 1850. In Joseph’s home the head was Thomas R Cumbee and his wife Eliza. This Eliza was age 37, and Thomas R was age 38. They had seven children ranging in age from 16 top 1, and then 23 year old Joseph Cumbee was listed last, as if he wasn’t a son, but was instead a nephew. The Thomas R Cumbee home also had other young men in it. All were carpenters or boatmen, so the home was a boat building establishment. Joseph was apparently learning his uncle’s trade. (24j,26n) There was a marriage in Charlotte Co between an Eliza Cumby and Benjamin Howard on 21 February 1839. That marriage was a second for Benjamin since they had numerous children in 1840, but the wife’s age matched with Eliza East’s age, and Benjamin was born in the 1790s. They lived in Campbell Co in 1850, and Eliza was born in 1804; Benjamin was born in 1781. None of the children had familiar East names, and they ranged in ages from 13 years to 5 months. Eliza had a broken shoulder then, and Elias was also suffering a serious ailment. He was a stone mason. Eliza died in 1913 and Eliza died in 1917, both probably at Newbrg where they had lived for over 30 years. They are buried together in Birch Lake Cemetery at Calvin. (M94) Elizabeth East [E4b2a8], daughter of Thomas East and Obedience _____ of Pittsylvania Co VA, was born soon after 1777. She was probably not 21 years by September 1798, but was at least 21 on 2 April 1808 when she sold some of her inheritance to her older brother Thomas. On that date her name was given as Elizabeth East, so she was not married (or had married an East?). (W,49k) (M92,D,W,L,JA,556m) Elizabeth East [E4c6c5a], daughter of James East and an unknown mother, was born between 1785 and 1794 in Lincoln Co KY or VA (Lincoln Co was a VA county in 1790). Nothing is known of her. (W,359h) Elizabeth East [E1b2], daughter of Thomas East and Sarah Graves, was born 26 August 1792 in Henry Co VA. She married Thomas S Webb on 5 January 1808 in Henry Co (the marriage bond was posted on 28 November 1807); the surety was Thomas C Bouldin (see Sally East, Elizabeth's sister). Elizabeth and Thomas moved to Giles Co and lived there for years afterwards near Pulaski. Later in life Thomas was called "Colonel," and died of typhoid pneumonia near Pulaski on 28 November 1851 at the age of 59. There are two gravestones in the Hopkins/Blooming Grove Cemetery off highway 15 near Leatherwood Creek which read "Thomas S Webb, 7 November 1793, 28 November 1851, aged 58 years," and next to it is "Mrs. Nancy, wife of Thomas S. Webb, d. 3 July 1844, aged 38 years." Because the 1840 census of Giles Co (page 160) shows the wife of Thomas S Webb to be in her 30s, then the census fits the age of Nancy, who was buried with Thomas. Apparently, by 1840 Elizabeth had died (or divorced Thomas?), and he remarried to Nancy. Another source of info says that Elizabeth died by 21 October 1878 in TX; they moved to TX before 1850; this info then must be talking of Elizabeth’s children, if Elizabeth had died by 1840. The only Thomas S Webb family found in Giles Co in 1840 shows his wife in her 30s, living in the north or northeast part of the county. But since they had four children in their early teen years, and 11 children altogether then, it would appear that this may be the second marriager of Thomas, and not a Thomas Webb Jr. At the time the Thomas S Webb family was living next door to the B(uckner) Abernathy family, father-in-law of Elizabeth's sister Maria, in the north or northeast part of the county. He was born on 15 September 1789 in KY. In 1850 and 1860 they were still in Monroe Co. This was Joseph’s second marriage. His first wife was Nancy R McCune, whom he married in Bourbon Co KY on 18 March 1816. Nancy died at McCune, Pike Co MO on 9 January 1834 with the birth of her ninth child; the last eight children were born in Pike Co. With Elizabeth East there were no children. She died in Monroe Co on 6 September 1868 and Joseph then lived with his daughter Elizabeth. He died 17 December 1870 in Monroe Co. Elizabeth East and Joseph Holliday were buried in Holliday Cemetery in Monroe Co. Joseph’s parents were William Holliday (born 1755 at Rathfriland, Down Co Ireland) and Martha Patton (born about 1760 in Ireland). (W,M92,995mnq) Elizabeth East [E4c3a3g], daughter of Isham East and Mary Edds, was born 22 July 1797 in Stokes Co NC. She married Freeman Copeland on 28 January 1822 in Patrick Co VA; the minister was Thomas Whitlock and the surety bond was paid by William East. Since Elizabeth’s paternal grandfather William East had died in 1803, the William East providing the bond must have been her brother. Freeman was born in NC in 1800 and died in Surry Co in the 1850s. In 1830 and 1840 they lived in Surry Co, and were probablyn there in 1827 when they were wanted in the Grayson Co courthouse concerning matters of her brother Drury’s estate. The March 1827 court record shows that “_____ Copeland and Betsey his wife are not inhabitants of this Commonwealth, and having not entered their appearance ...” In 1850 they were both still in Surry Co (spelled Copland), and lived at Siloam. In 1860 Elizabeth and three children still lived together in Surry Co, at Dobson. They had seven children, all born in Surry Co NC- 1. girl Copeland, b 1822-1830, had married or died in the 1840s. (W) (M92,L) Elizabeth East [E4c3a3a1], probably a daughter of John East and Mary Johnson, was born 2 January 1812 in Stokes Co NC. She was age 1811-1820 in 1840 with her husband in Stokes Co, and age 1811-1815 in 1820 and 1830 in Stokes Co in her father’s home. Elizabeth married George Martin Nelson in Stokes Co on 14 December 1830; the bond was provided by Jason Amburn. Martin was born about the same time as Elizabeth, according to the 1840 census. They remained in Stokes Co into the end of the 1840s, but in 1850 lived in Wythe Co VA. She died in Wythe Co on 9 February 1881 and was buried in Shaffer Cemetery with Martin. He was born in Stokes Co NC near Pilot Mountain on 13 August 1810 and died in Wythe Co on 5 July 1881 “age 70y-10m-23d.” He was buried in the small Shaffer Cemetery. Living in their home in 1850 was Isom East, age 33 and born in VA. This was probably Elizabeth’s brother. In the Shaffer Cemetery there were only four Nelson graves; Elizabeth and “G M Nelson” plus children Isom and Margaret Nelson. There were only three East men from Surry Co or Stokes Cxo NC who could be Elizabeth’s father: John East [E4c3a3a], Joseph C East [E4c3a1d], and Thomas East Jr [E4c3a2e]. All three had a daughter of Elizabeth’s age in the censuses of 1820 and 1830. Since we can be pretty sure that the Isom East living with Elizabeth in Wythe Co in 1850 was her brother, then of the three possible fathers just mentioned, all had a son of Isom’s age. But of those three possible fathers, it was only John who had a father named Isham, a possible namesake for Elizabeth’s brother Isom. Furthermore, Drury East [E4c3a3c8] had also moved to Wythe Co and had a son born there. Drury was a nephew of John East [E4c3a3a]; families generally stick together when they moved to a new location. Hence, Elizabeth East who married George M Nelson is probably a daughter of John East. (She cannot be a sister of the above Drury East because Drury was a son of William East, Elizabeth’s uncle, and William’s children are known; none of them were Elizabeth or Isom.) Elizabeth and Martin had seven children by 1850, all born in Stokes Co NC-* a. Isom Nelson, b 7 Oct 1832 in Stokes Co NC and moved to Wythe Co VA when he was about age 17. He married Margaret A _____ in 1859 and lived next door to his parents. Margaret was born in VA on 1 September 1841. When the Civil War broke out, Isom served in the Virginia Infantry for the Confederacy and received a pension for his service. He enlisted as a Private on 15 May 1862 in Company H, 63rd Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was hospitalized on 20 October 1863. Isom was promoted to Full Corporal 4th Class on 1 January 1864, and was a Prisoner Of War on 3 July 1864 at Marietta, GA and sent to Camp Douglass, IL on 16 July 1864. Over the years after the Civil War, Isom and Margaret did a good job of avoiding the census takers. The next time after 1860 they were found was at Lead Mine, Wythe Co in 1900. Margaret was buried in Shaffer Cemetery with Isom. She died 22 July 1899 “Wife Of Isom.” Isom died 9 March 1907. By then their daughter had died. His and Margaret’s daughter was-* 1. Elizabeth Nelson, b 1859 in Wythe Co VA, She married George H Suthers at the home of Colonel Robert Sayers on 27 October 1881. She was dead by 1900 (probably dead long before then). In 1870 William was not found, but Sophrona and her eldest three children lived at Fort Chiswell in Wythe Co; their ages, though were about ten years off, as if someone who was not familiar with the family gave the census taker incorrect information. They lived in Wythe Co at Black Lick in 1880. William died by 1900 and Sophrona lived at Fort Chriswell. They had nine children, all still alive in 1900-* 1. Letitia Nelson, b 1863 (1085s) 2. (492q,W,76mk,1085nqrc) Elizabeth East [E4c3a1d7], daughter of Joseph C East and probably Joseph’s first wife, was born in 1814 in NC. She married James Badgett in Surry Co on 4 October 1845 and lived in Stokes Co at Marshes. James Badgett was born in 1815 in NC. Elizabeth must have married a Mr Copeland first, and then married James Badgett second. The bondsman for the second marriage was Albert White. No marriage records were found that may apply to Elizabeth, before her marriage with James Badgett, but her marriage record with James was “Elizabeth Copeland,” so she must have married a Mr Copeland first around the middle or early 1830s (her first two daughters were born then). And the only prior marriage for James Badgett was on 21 January 1837 in Rowan Co; that marriage was with “James Badget” actually, and was too late to explain the first two daughters below. Elizabeth was an apparent widow living in Surry Co in 1840 with two daughters; her mother, aunt, or mother-in-law was also living with her then. On the following census page were: John Venable [E4c3a4e], son of Ursula East and William Venable; Freeman Copeland, husband of Elizabeth East [E4c3a3g]; and Jesse Copeland, Garrett Copeland, and Truman Copeland. These three Copeland men were of age to be brothers to Freeman Copeland. In 1860 her apparent father Joseph East, age 76 and “feeble” was living with her and James. James Badgett died in the 1870s in Surry Co, and in 1880 Elizabeth lived at Eldora next to her son Burell. Elizabeth’s parents were both born in NC, according to the 1880 census. Elizabeth’s seven children were all born in NC, probably Surry Co- 1. Adaline Copeland, b 1834 2, Sally Ann Copeland, b 1836 3. Clarissa J Badgett, b 1842 4. John R Badgett, b Dec 1844 5. She married Harry L Campbell in 1895 (per 1900 census) or in 1887 (per 1910 census) and they lived at Fairfield, Henrico Co.
