Jesse Cherry [C1a6b1], son of Faithful Cherry, was born in 1731 in Norfolk Co VA, or in Tyrrell Co NC (see notes following). We know Jesse's father was Faithful Cherry because Jesse's brother's Isaac named Jesse as a brother (or brother-in-law?) in Isaac's will; Isaac was named as Faithful's son in Faithful's will. Jesse was in Martin Co NC in the state census of 1787, and was living next to his uncle Job and three doors from his father. Jesse had a large family. In 1790 he was living next to his brothers Joel, James, and Jonathan. By then Jesse's father had been dead for over a year. There was another Jesse Cherry in Martin Co in 1790: He was Jesse Cherry Esquire, and was living three doors from Thomas Beach Senr and had only a wife, with no children. Jesse, son of Faithful, sold 50 acres on Wild Cat Swamp, bounded next to Thomas Whitley's land, to brother Joel Cherry on 20 January 1784. The sale was witnessed by Harrell Cherry and Rhodie Cherry; Rhodie made her “Χ” mark. On the same date Faithful Cherry sold 50 acres in the same area to Jesse; the witnesses were the same.

"Loving friend" Jesse Cherry was named as the executor in the will of William Anderson on 13 November 1789. In these years, a “loving friend” was usually a brother or a close -in-law. Witnesses of William Anderson's will were Jesse Cooper, Rhoda Cherry, and Jane “ Π” Cone. Of the executor and the witnesses, they all lived near each other in Williamston. There were three Cone families four doors from William Anderson, and the Jesse Cone home was a few doors further on and next to Jesse Cooper. About mid-way between the Anderson home and the four Cherry homes of Jesse, Joel, James, and Jonathan, was the home of the county coroner Harrell Cherry. Rhoda, Jesse's sister, probably never married and could have been living with Jesse in 1790; Jesse had five females in his home (Joel had four, but James and Jonathan had one each). Jesse also witnessed a sale between Isaac Byrd and William Anderson on 11 March 1778.

From various sources, Jesse Cherry of Martin Co married Mary Riddick first (the mother of his children), married Eliza Bennett second, and married Julia Miller last. Mary was a daughter of Joseph Riddick and Hannah ____. Julia was a daughter of Joshua Miller and Polly Little. Jesse was living alone in Martin Co in 1810, and died there about 1817. He had eight children-

William Anderson apparently died by the summer of 1790 because his widow Ann was the head of their home. In her household then were three females, a boy under age 16, and a boy over age 16. William's will in November 1889 named his wife Ann, daughters Ann & Elizabeth, and sons William, and James Anderson. In 1787 William Anderson, living in Williamston, had one boy under the age of 21, and two females in his home. From these two census reports and William's will, it appears that William Anderson's children were born as follows: William, born by 1774; Ann, born by 1787, and Elizabeth and James born after 1787.

Neil Cone, planter, left his 30 July 1782 will in Martin Co in which it named sons Ned, Jesse, Levy, & William Cone, and daughters Sarah Joyce, Mary Harrell, Patience Morris, Martha Cherry, & Charity Cone. Witnesses to this will were Jesse Cooper, William Brewer, and Andrew Anderson. (57,68, 77,91, G,1aehpz)

Jesse Cherry There were five early Jesse Cherry men living in and around Martin County by 1810 (three still living), and two by 1790: Jesse Cherry, son of Faithful Cherry Jr, was born in 1731 and died in 1817, and married Mary Riddick, Eliza Bennett, and Julia Miller; Jesse Cherry Esquire, son of John, was born in 1740 and died in 1807, was a war hero and a politician, and married Elizabeth Gainer; Jesse Cherry, son of Jonathan Cherry Sr, was born in 1763 and died in 1823, was a bricklayer, and married Elizabeth _____; Jesse Cherry Junior, son of Jesse Esquire, was born in 1770 and never married; and another Jesse Cherry Junior, probably a son of Joel Cherry, was born about 1785 and lived in the same neighborhood as Joel Cherry in 1810. All five of these Jesse Cherry men lived in Martin County. Jonathan and Joel Cherry were brothers of the elder Jesse Cherry.

Information on children and spouses of Jesse Cherry, born in 1731, mostly came from the book The Thigpen Tribe. This source, though, had obviously listed Jesse's parents incorrectly. As for the will record showing Jesse as a brother of Isaac: Source JY read this will in 1980, taking notes, but not quoting the whole will. And again in 1990 he re-read the same will, forgetting that it had been read ten years prior. Both sets of notes matched. But there is a discrepancy in that the transcribed copy of Isaac's will, made into a book, shows Jesse being named as a brother-in-law of Isaac.

Jesse Cherry [C1a9c1], son of John Cherry and Mary Jordan, was born 4 July 1740 in Tyrrell Co NC, probably in the section of the county which became part of Martin Co in 1774. He was married about 1760 to Julia Little, and about 1770 married Elizabeth Gainer. Elizabeth was a daughter of Arthur Gainer and Sarah Elizabeth Butler. Jesse's wife Elizabeth was born in 1750 or 1751, probably in Tyrrell Co, and died in 1836. Source 59 says Jesse's wife was Elizabeth Wheatley, daughter of Samuel Wheatley (born about 1705). But the will (Tyrell Co NC, dated 1 October 1751) of Arthur Gainer said he gave to "my Daughter Elizabeth Cherry ten Shillings."

Jesse rendered at least two services for his country during the Revolutionary War, serving 84 months; he received 640 acres for his service, and was discharged as a private. He lived in Martin Co from at least 13 September 1775 since he witnessed the will of Robert Sherrod on that date. In 1779 Jesse was listed on the Martin Co tax roster. On 27 October 1784 he received three tracts of Martin Co land from the state of NC: 200 acres next to “Cherry's old corner,” 100 acres next to Benjamin Wheatley's (spelled Whitley's) land and “along a line supposed to be in Job Cherry's line,” and 100 acres next to “Cherry's old line,” Edward Byrd's land, and next to Whitley's land. In March 1793, sheriff John Bowers of Pitt Co sold a negro to “Jesse Cherry of Martin Co” for £81. In the sale it was mentioned that Jesse was an executor of Benjamin Whitley, so perhaps Jesse bought the slave with estate money in order to help maintain the Whitley farms. In the 1790 census, this Jesse and his wife were living in the area of many of the neighbors named in the above 1784 land purchase.

Jesse was also a representative to the House Of Commons for Martin Co for five terms (1790, 1791, 1792, 1795, and 1801), and was a Martin Co court justice in 1792. We know this was the correct Jesse Cherry of Martin Co because he was referred to as Jesse Cherry Esq when, in 1810 his heirs received a land grant as the “brother and only heir of Daniel Cherry, dec'd, soldier in the last war.” The title Esquire was normally reserved for elder respected politicians.

Jesse was dead by 28 July 1807 because Jesse Cherry (born in 1731, and son of Faithful Cherry) was the administrator of the estate of the late Thomas Fones, and sold some of the estate land to “Elizabeth Fones now the wife of Elisha Williams” of Martin Co, land next to the land patented by “Jesse Cherry decd.” And on 29 September 1808 “Darling Cherry, executor to the last will and testament of Jesse Cherry Esq. Decd and in consideration of the qantity of four hundred & fifty dollars in hand,” sold to Thomas Cofield a Negro man by the name of Joe; Darling signed and James Bennett witnessed (deed Book E, page 253). And on 22 September 1810 the Martin Co coroner, Harrell Cherry, son of Faithful Cherry (and uncle of the late Jesse Cherry Esquire), referred to “the executors of Jesse Cherry the plaintiff,” thus also saying that Jesse was dead. There were three Jesse Cherrys in the Martin Co census of 1810: Jesse Cherry the bricklayer, born in 1763 (son of Jonathan Cherry); Jesse Cherry, born about 1770 (the bachelor son of Jesse Cherry Esquire); and Jesse Cherry Junior, born in 1731 (son of Faithful Cherry). Bricklayer Jesse did not die until 1823. In 1790 Jesse Cherry, son of Jonathan, lived in Martin Co next to Joel Cherry, son of Faithful.

After Jesse's death Elizabeth later married Edward Byrd on 7 February 1822 in Martin Co “at the residence of Lawrence Cherry, Esq. by the Rev. Joseph Biggs.” Edward, age 82 at the time, was the father of William Byrd who married Jesse's daughter Lovey Cherry. Elizabeth was age 71 at this second marriage. Jesse and Julia had two sons, and with Elizabeth he had at least twelve children, many of whom moved to Wilson, Hardin, Davidson, and Rutherford Counties TN. The sources of naming Jesse's children are shown after each child-

Arthur Gainer left a 13 September 1780 will in Martin Co naming his wife Elizabeth, daughters Elizabeth Cherry, Sarah Turner, Mary Jenkins, Nancy Avary, brother Joseph Gainer, and sons James Gainer and Arthur Gainer. William Byrd of Tyrrell Co left a will dated 8 November 1791 in which he named his mother Ann Slaughter, brother Edward Byrd, and mentioned Solomon Cherry, and others. This will was probated in Martin Co in December 1791. (51,57,66,69,90,91,WD,RM, DK,1aepzt)

Jesse Cherry [unknown], born in NC in 1761, lived in Jasper Co GA from 1823 to his death in December 1841. The Southern Recorder newspaper reported, on 14 December 1841, that “At his residence in Jasper County, Mr. Jesse Cherry, an aged and respectable citizen of that county, [died] in his 80th year. He was a native of North Carolina, and had lived in Jasper County for the past eighteen years.” <– Sources?

Jesse Cherry [C1a6b2c], son of Jonathan Cherry of Martin Co NC, was born close to 1760, perhaps in 1763, in Martin Co NC. He was no doubt named for his uncle. Jesse the nephew was a bricklayer, as was his father. In the 1787 state census of Martin Co there was only one Jesse Cherry in the county, the son of Faithful (and brother of Jonathan) who was living three doors from Faithful in Williamston (district 3), and who was known as Jesse Cherry Esquire on many records. But Jonathan Cherry (in district 7) in 1787 had two adult males in his household, two boys, and four females. Jesse, son of Jonathan, was probably the other adult male in Jonathan's home. The 1790 census showed two Jesse Cherry men: one had a large family and was living next to Joel, James, and Jonathan Cherry (in Jonathan's house there was only himself and his wife); the second Jesse was living close to Thomas Beach Senr and William Slade, and had only himself and his wife. Of these two, the one close to Jonathan and Joel was Jesse Esquire, and the one close to Thomas Beach Senr was the son of Jonathan.

The 1800 Martin Co census shows Jesse as “Jesse Cherry - son of Jonathan,” and he was aged between 26 and 44. Therefore his birth date was between 1756 and 1763. And since he was a newly married adult in the 1790 census, he was likely born in the 1760s. Jesse, son of Jonathan, had two boys and two girls under the age of 10 in 1800. One of the boys was the Jesse Cherry Junior in the 1810 census.

On 17 February 1784 “Jesse Cherry, bricklayer of Martin Co,” bought 50 acres for £6 from “James Biggs, cooper of Martin Co;” this was witnessed by Jeremiah Cherry and Joshua Cherry (made an “Χ”). James Biggs signed; James was the husband of Jemima Cherry . Jesse was probably the Jesse Cherry who was one of the executors of the 1811 will of Job Cherry in Martin Co. Jesse was named as the executor in the 10 August 1822 will of William Swanner, and Jesse's son Dawson was a witnesses.

Jesse left a will in Martin Co dated 24 July 1823 and proven in September 1823; the executors were James Mayo (perhaps the husband of Jesse's sister Elizabeth?) and Dawson Cherry, and witnesses were Daniel Parrish & Richard Medford (see Jesse's sister Jenney for a Medford connection). In his will Jesse named his wife Elizabeth and five children; to daughter Martha one Negro girl, Harriet; to daughter Polly Medford a Negro boy named Sam; to daughter Sabrina a Negro girl named Charlotte and Negro Clarey after Mother's death; to son Dawson half of the land not given to wife Elizabeth, also to Dawson the half given to wife Elizabeth after she dies, and a Negro boy named Washington; to wife Elizabeth half of land including plantation, Negroes named Vilet, boy named Peter, and girl named Clarey; to son Howell 100 acres including the Bellflower tract and a Negro boy named Peter after mother dies. Jesse's father named the first three of Jesse's children in his father's will. Jesse apparently married Elizabeth Mayo in 1789 or 1790, and had no children by 1790-

2.    Cynthia Cherry, b 1790s?

3.    William Cherry, b 1790s?

4.    Martha Cherry, b c1795

5.    Howell Cherry, b 20 Jun 1793

6.    Mary Cherry, b 1790s

7.    Dawson Cherry, b c1800

8.    Sabrina Cherry, b p1800

In the 1789 Martin Co will of James Biggs (husband of Jemima Cherry ), James named “Loving friend Jesse Cherry” as an executor. Jesse lived a few doors from James in 1787 at Williamston. James Biggs also had a sister Mourning Biggs who married Wright Cherry. James Biggs was the husband of Jemima Cherry [C1a6f1] (91,1apze)

Jesse Cherry [C1a9c3a], son of John Cherry Jr and Sarah _____, was probably born in the mid-1760s to the 1770s in Tyrrell Co NC (born about 4 July 1749 in Halifax district of Martin Co, per 114). He married Elizabeth _____. (57,69,77,NS,DK,WD)

Jesse Cherry Jr [C1a9c1c], son of Jesse Cherry and Elizabeth Gainer, was born about 1770 in Martin Co NC. On 12 November 1808 Jesse Cherry sold to Silas Bennett, both of Martin Co, a tract “with all the appurtenances excepting one quarter of an acre of land together with my father grave yard lying and being in the aforesaid county containing three hundred and twenty four acres” on the west side of Smithwick's Creek on Ward's line and by Biggs' and Cherry's dividing line. Robert Warren witnessed and Jesse Cherry signed. Because this deed mentioned “my father grave yard” in November 1808, the Jesse selling the land must have been a son of Jesse Cherry Esquire; Jesse Esquire died about 1807. In 1800 Jesse Jr was single, the head of his own household, living alone in Martin Co, age 26 to 44.

In 1810 there were three Jesse Cherry men in Martin Co: the first Jesse was living next to Joel Cherry on page 445 of the census; this Jesse was a son of Jonathan. The second Jesse was called Jesse Cherry Jun. and was six doors from Abner Cherry (page 446); Jesse Jun. (not to be confused with the Jesse Jun. in the 1810 census -- see below) was age 16 to 26. The third Jesse Cherry was the subject of this biography. He was three doors from William Swanner (on page 449), and was the son of the late Jesse Cherry Esquire. This Jesse, although called “Jesse Cherry Jun.” in 1800 when his father was still living, was still single. He appears to have always been a bachelor; in 1800 he was born between 1756 and 1774, and in 1810 he was born between 1766 and 1784. Therefore, Jesse's birth date was about 1770. After 1810 he was not found, nor did he leave a will in Martin Co. (69,1aehpz)

Jesse Cherry [unknown], possibly a son of Joel Cherry and Joel's first wife, was called Jesse Cherry Jun. in 1807 and 1810 in Martin Co NC. He was born between 1785 and 1794, probably in Martin Co. Jesse, called Jesse Cherry Junior, was of age to witness the land sale of 83½ acres from Thomas Fones to “Elizabeth Fones now the wife of Elisha Williams” on 28 July 1807. Jesse Cherry (not this Jesse) was the administrator of the Thomas Fones estate; it was the deceased Thomas Fones' land being sold, and was property next to Cherry land and patented by Jesse Cherry deceased (Jesse Esquire, who died soon before the date of this land sale). Since Jesse was often called a “Junior” after the death of Jesse Esquire (he also became an adult at about the time Jesse Esquire died), Jesse Junior wouldn't be a son of Jesse Cherry Esquire, but would instead be a “junior” to another older Jesse Cherry. In 1807 and 1810 the only older Jesse Cherry men in the area were the son of Faithful (born in 1731), and the son of Jesse Cherry Esquire (born in 1770). Neither of these two older men had a son named Jesse, so “Jesse Cherry Jun.” must have been a cousin or nephew to the older ones. It was common to use the “Junior” title if someone older of the same name lived nearby. And Jesse Junior lived close to Jesse Cherry, son of Faithful, in 1810. But this does not resolve the problem of who Jesse Junior's father was.

In 1810 Jesse Jr and his family consisted of Jesse, another male in his young teen years, a woman of about the same age as Jesse, two young teenage girls, and a girl under the age of 10. Since Jesse was not of age to be a parent to the teenagers, they may have been his siblings. After 1810 Jesse was not found in the Martin Co area. Jesse appears to be closely related to Abner Cherry since he lived six doors from Abner in 1810 and was named with Abner to be an executor of Job Cherry's February 1811 will with Abner. From the 1790 and 1800 censuses, the eight Cherry men who had sons, one of whom who could be Jesse, were:

Harrell Cherry the county coroner had a boy under age 16 in 1790 and that boy was age 10 to 15 in 1800. Harrell Cherry left no will and was dead by 1810.

James Cherry had an older teenage boy in 1790, and died between 1797 and the summer of 1800. His will only named sons James and John.

Jesse Cherry Esquire, had many sons; one was over age 16 in 1790. Jesse Esquire was born in 1731, so was of an age to have a son named Jesse Cherry Junior. But there is no evidence that he did.

Jesse Cherry, son of Jonathan, was newly married about 1790, yet without children then. He did not name a son as Jesse in his will, but had two boys under age 10 in 1800. They wouldn't have been over age 16 in 1807 to witness a land sale, so Jesse, son of Jonathan, was probably not the father.

Joab Cherry, had three sons in his house in 1790. one was over age 15 and the other two were under age 16. Joab was not found in 1800 and left no will.

Job Cherry, had two teenage boys over age 15 in 1790, but he did not name Jesse Cherry as a son in his poorly written 1811 will. Job died in 1814, but was not found in 1810.

Joel Cherry, had three boys under age 16 in 1790. Joel's 1816 will indicated that he was married twice, and the last wife was the mother of his five youngest children. Jesse was not named as one of them. But Jesse “Jun.” could easily be a son from the first marriage. In 1810 Jesse lived in the same community where Joel lived.

Jonathan Cherry, had an older teenage boy and two under age 16 in 1790. He did not name a son Jesse Cherry in his will.

Of these eight men, one is the likely father of Jesse: Joel Cherry. (1pzaeh)

Jesse Cherry [unknown], was in Edgecombe Co in 1820. He was born between 1795 and 1804. He was not on the 1815 Edgecombe Co tax roster, but in 1820 he was living in Edgecombe Co with a young woman (his wife?) of about the same age. They had no children then, and lived next to widower John Mayo and Frederick Hopkins. After 1820 Jesse was not found in the Edgecombe Co area. (5i)

Jesse Cherry [C1a9c1g3], son of Isham Cherry and Silva Harrell, was born 27 April 1804 in Martin Co NC. He was a young man when his family moved to Hardin Co TN, and there he was elected County Register in the place of James Barnes who resigned. Isham Cherry and Eli Cherry, his father and brother, were bondsmen. Jesse and his brother Noel were indicted in Hardin Co on 5 October 1824 for assault and battery against Alexander Shaddock. In the 1830 census Jesse was the head of his household, but there was apparently another young family living with him. The second man was close to Jesse's age (probably Jesse's younger brother Harrell Cherry), the woman in the household was in her late teens (Harrell's wife? or Jesse's wife?), and there was a young boy under the age of five. Jesse married Nancy Lilly, daughter of Noah Lilly, and sister of Margaret Lilly who married Jesse's brother Noel. Nancy was born about 1810. Noah Lilly of Hardin Co gave to his daughter Nancy Cherry a Negro boy named George Westly on 10 July 1837 (Hardin Co deed book D, page 11). Noah's daughter Nancy must have been an older adult at the time because Noah also granted “unto my daughter Nancy Cherrys heirs to wit Columbus Franklin, Isham Perry, Margaret Elizabeth, Noel Jackson, Lilly and all other lawfull heirs she may have in the present wedlock ...” And Hardin Co deed book I, page 378, dated 20 January 1847, concerns the January 1842 petition of “Columbus F Cherry, Isham P Cherry, & Margaret Elizabeth Cherry” by their guardian Jesse Cherry. 100 acres in the 6th Civil District was sold to Eli Cherry. This was in reference to the tract of Isham Cherry, the grandfather of said petitioners.

Jesse apparently had financial difficulties and was forced to sell a slave to pay off debts. He borrowed $700 from Elias W Porter of MS on 4 March 1839, with slave George, age 21, as collateral, in order to pay off what was owed to David Robinson (Hardin Co deed book D, page 317).

Jesse was appointed guardian (i.e., power of attorney) of his three children in order receive inheritance from Jesse's father Isham on 2 August 1841. Jesse was found in Titus Co in the 1846 tax roster in Titus Co TX, and Nancy was found there in the 1850 census. Jesse must have died in the latter 1840s in Titus Co. There was also a “J B Cherry” and an “S R Cherry” in the 1846 tax roster. The five children named in the court records were-* #b-#h

Jesse Viola Cherry [C1a9e9b9c], daughter of McGilbra Longstreet Cherry and Nancy Winniford Weathersbee, was born 26 January 1858 in Martin Co or in Pitt Co NC and died on 20 May 1862. (77.121)

Jimmie F Cherry [C1a9f4d6a], daughter of James M Cherry and A L Rawls, was born 4 March 1877, probably in Weakley Co TN, and died on 8 July 1879. She is buried in Ralston Cemetery in Weakley Co with her father. (117,45nqr)

Joab Cherry [unknown] of Martin Co NC (was perhaps a son of Job Cherry and Job's possible first wife?). Joab (perhaps he was Job Jr?) was born by the early 1750s because on 6 March 1773 Joab bought from John Kennedy, both of Tyrrell Co (later to become Martin Co), 50 acres, part of a 560 acres tract “on ye east side of Stancil's branch.” On 8 July 1777 Joab sold 50 acres to William Anderson, both of Martin Co, land “beginning at a red oak marked Thms I C running thence So to a corner tree a pine” etc. This was witnessed by Isaac Kennedy and Jesse Cooper. Joab Cherry signed. In December 1778 Joab witnessed a sale from Anderson to Thomas Ward. In January 1779 Joab witnessed a land sale from William Anderson to Isaac Kennedy. On 17 March 1779 “Joab Cherry of Martin Co” sold 100 acres to Lylliston Banks “beginning on the South side of Stancel's Branch at the mouth of the Spring Branch running up the Branch to a white oak Isaac Kennedy line” etc. This was witnessed by Jesse Cooper and Charles Hunter. “Joab” Cherry signed. And in 1779 Joab was on the county tax list.

In the 1787 state census Joab was married and had six children, and no slaves; he lived near Joel Cherry. In 1790 he had seven children, no slaves, and was living near Harrell Cherry. Joab was not in the 1800 or 1810 census, so had apparently died in Martin Co in the 1790s. Isaac Kennedy was probably the husband of Mary Ann Cherry . (68,77,1zt)

Job Cherry [C1a5e], son of Faithfull Cherry and Patience _____ of Norfolk Co VA, was born in Norfolk Co in the 1720s (he was named in his father's 1727 will), and received one _____ (barrel?) of about five gallons “to be delivered to him at the death of his mother.” Job moved to Tyrrell Co NC by 1755 since he was on the county tax list then, possibly with his new bride Abiah Ventures (his daughter Jemima was born about 1756 in NC). Job would have been about age 30 when they married, and about age 40 when Abiah's first known child was born. Therefore it would be reasonable to assume that Job may have had a wife before Abiah, and possibly one or two children with the first wife. Abiah was born about 1736. Two of Job's brothers also moved to Martin Co, or were there in the mid-18th Century: Faithful was one who actually settled in Tyrrell Co, as did Job (in what became Martin Co in 1774); brother Titus witnessed a land sale between a John Cherry and William Swanner on 15 September 1762 in Tyrrell Co.

On 26 November 1764, for £7/10, Job sold 114 acres in Tyrrell Co, land adjacent to more of his farm land, to Southey Haislip (Book E, page 326). This land was also next to that of Charles Haislip and land owned by Mr Whitehurste. In February 1774 Job Cherry bought 150 acres from Matthew Yarall. This purchase was witnessed by _____ Cherry. In 1779 Job was on the Martin Co tax list. On 27 October 1784 Jesse Cherry, probably Job's nephew (Faithful's son), patented 200 acres from NC, land next to Job Cherry's land.

In the NC state census of 1787, Job lived next door to Jesse Cherry and two doors from Faithful Cherry in district 3; four doors from Faithful was James Biggs who had married Job's daughter Jemima Cherry [C1a6f1]. In the state census Job is shown with a large family: one adult male (Job), five white males under 21, six white females, and five Blacks. Job also bought an 11 year old Negro boy named Phill from William Pully in October 1790 in Martin Co.

Job Cherry was a private in the NC Continental Line under John Price, and 640 acres were granted to Job for his 84 months of service. On 17 January 1782 Job was paid £12/8/8 plus another £1/0 from the “State of NC Halifax District” for his military service; he also received £2/2 on 17 April 1784 for his military service of 1787.

Job Cherry Sr and Joshua Cherry sold 150 acres to David Carraway on 14 November 1795. Joshua signed; Job made his “Χ” mark. Job and his wife were living in Martin Co in 1800 with one apparent daughter or granddaughter (age 16 to 25). He left a will in Martin Co dated 23 February 1811. It was proven in December 1814, so Job died in the latter part of 1814, at an age of about 90. The executors named in the will were his son Abner Cherry (son Jeremiah had already moved west to Columbia, TN, so could not be an executor), and Jesse Cherry (Job's great nephew); witnesses were Malachi Etheridge and Harrell Cherry (son of Job's brother Faithful Cherry). Job could not write, but in his rambling will he gave son Abner land, the plantation, and the house in Williamston “formerly belonging to Jonathan Cherry” (son of Faithful). He gave son Joshua a Negro named Dick, gave son “Jerry” a Negro named George, and gave cash to Joshua, Job Jr, and Abner. Jemima and her mother were not named, so were probably dead by 1811. See Jemima's biography; her husband also did not name her in his will. Job had at least nine children (see Joab Cherry), the first eight born in Tyrrell Co NC-

1.    Jemima Cherry, b c1756

2.    Joshua Cherry, b 15 Feb 1761

3.    Job Cherry Jr, b c1763

4.    Jeremiah Cherry, b 1 Apr 1766

6.    Abner Cherry, b c1768

7.    Mary Cherry, b c1770

8.    Anna Cherry, b c1772

For more Price information, see Job's son Jeremiah ; he married Mary Price. Also, William Swanner's 8 June 1777 will named his wife Sarah, sons Thomas, William, Henry, Matthias, and four unnamed daughters; the will went to probate in July that year. (69,91,JY,L, 28p,1pet)

Job Cherry Jr [C1a6e3], son of Job Cherry and Abiah Ventures, was born about 1763 in Tyrrell Co NC. He owned land in Martin Co. There are deeds of a Job Cherry who could not sign his name, but instead made an Χ. Since Job Cherry Jr did sign, then any record of a Job Cherry signed with an “Χ” is Job Cherry Sr.

Job Jr sold 100 acres to William Carraway on 6 October 1800 and signed the deed of sale (Book C, page 701). By 1787 Job Jr was married to a woman who was born about the same time as he; they lived in Williamston, and had eight children by 1800-

Job Cherry [unknown] (son of Job Cherry ?), of Caldwell Co KY, left a will there in 1848: Book B, page 98. He also had a daughter Ann Cherry because in 1819 he cave consent, as her father, for her to marry. Since he gave consent, she must have been under age 18. Job (as Jobe Cherry) was on the Trigg Co in 1810 tax roster, living in the Eddy Creek area; he was at least age 21 then. Per the 1830 Caldwell Co census, Job was born in the 1760s, and his wife in the 1750s. His daughter was-*

Joe Nelson Cherry [C1a6e4h2b4], son of Pleasant Nelson Cherry and Susan Lillian Sands, was born in 1906, probably in Maury Co TN. (EC)

Joel Cherry [C1a3b1], son of Spring Cherry and Lucy ____, was born by about the 1740s (he was married in 1768) in Norfolk Co VA. Joel received the 105 acre plantation his father inherited from his father John Cherry in 1754, plus cooper's tools. Joel married Nancy Allen in 1768 in Norfolk Co, but by 1785 he was not listed in Norfolk Co on the Federal census. He may be the Joel Cherry, or his descendants, who moved to the northeastern part of TX. They also may have moved to SC by 1800. (77,28pam)

Joel Cherry, parents unknown, was born 21 October 1768 in Norfolk Co VA. He married Nancy Allen in Norfolk Co VA on 23 December 1802. She was born 5 July 1783, probably in VA, and was a daughter of Captain John Allen and Myrick Middleton Wilson. Joel and Nancy apparently moved to SC soon after their marriage. He died on 10 January 1848 at Lancaster, SC, and Nancy died on 24 June 1859 at Lancaster. There were eight children who survived them. Their twelve children were-

Joel Cherry [C1a6b4], son of Faithful Cherry and Susannah _____, was born by the mid-1750s in Tyrrell Co NC. He was a cooper in Martin Co, and was named in his father's February 1787 will. Joel bought 100 acres from John Kennedy on 4 July 1777 (thus he was probably at least age 21 then), land next to Isaac Kennedy's property. On 6 February 1783 Joel bought 100 acres from his father, land on Wildcat Swamp next to Benjamin Whitley's line. This was witnessed by Stephen Anderson and Harrell Cherry. In the 17 October 1783 will of Isaac Cherry, “dearly beloved brother Joel Cherry” was given Isaac's plantation. On 20 January 1784 “Jesse Cherry, bricklayer of Martin Co” sold 50 acres to “Joel Cherry, a cooper of Martin Co” for £7. The land was on the east side of Wild Cat Swamp, and next to Thomas Whitley's line. This purchase was witnessed by Harrell Cherry and Rhodie Cherry, who left her Χ mark. Jesse Cherry signed. On 29 September 1810 Jonathan Cherry granted “my worthy friend Joel Cherry” power of attorney. This was witnessed by Malachi Chappell and Obadiah Bullock.

In 1787 Joel was living next to Joab Cherry in Williamston, and in 1790 was living next to his nephews James Cherry and Jonathan Cherry (sons of James Cherry), and next to older brother Jesse Cherry. Harrell Cherry and Job Cherry lived nearby. Joel was a member of the House of Commons from 1804 to 1805, in 1809, from 1812 to 1813, and in 1816.

Joel may have been married to Lydia ____ for on 25 November 1806 Joel and Lydia Cherry witnessed the sale of land from Isaac Kennedy to Levi Harrell. Joel's wife in 1800 was born after 1755, so could be the mother of the two girls born before 1787. His wife in 1810 was at least 45 years old, thus placing her birth date (if she was the same wife) between 1755 and 1765, or about 1760. He was called “Joel Cherry Esq” on 2 January 1816 when he bought a Negro named Linden from Isham Cherry for $300. Joel left a 13 November 1816 Martin Co will, proven in September 1817, in which he said his present wife Susanna was not his first wife, and the five youngest children were those of his wife Susanna. Susanna was Susanna Smithwick (Martin Co deed book D, page 120), daughter of Edward Von Smithwick. This connection was found in a land deed dated 13 Mar 1804 Martin Co. Susannah and Joel Cherry both signed the deed to sell 150 acres to Luke Smithwick, land originally given to Susannah by her father.

Joel's first children were two girls born by the summer of 1787. His family is hard to piece together since some of the children died young, and his will did not name all of them. Between 1790 and 1800 Joel acquired two slaves, and by 1810 had eight. From the census records in Martin Co of 1787, 1790, 1800, and 1810 we can build his family, carrying the information of each prior census to the next; Martin Co's 1820 census no longer exists. Using information generated by census and probate records of Martin Co, and the 1830 census, Joel may have had thirteen children-* #a-#i, #k-#n

Joel Lilley Cherry [C1a9c1b3c], son of John W Cherry and Elizabeth Boyer, was born 19 December 1824 in Howard Co MO, and grew up in Linn Co. He married Mary Ann Hines in 1842 in Linn Co. She was born 15 December 1823 in Howard Co. In the fall of 1859 they moved from Linn Co to Cooke Co TX and were found there on the Federal census. Soon afterwards, they moved to Washington Co AR, and in 1861 he joined the Confederate Army. For years after the war they were found in Washington Co. Mary Ann died there on 28 January 1889 and was buried in Rose Cemetery at Prairie Grove.

Joel moved to the Indian Territory (OK) after his wife's death and was living with his son John T near Butner, north of Wewoka. Joel was murdered by highway robbers in February 1901 (the killers were caught and/or killed). He was buried in the Holdenville, OK Cemetery where his granddaughter Mattie Cherry was buried.        John Cherry Jr [C1a], son of immigrant John Cherry and Elizabeth Faithful, was born about 1641 in Norfolk Co VA. He married Rebecca Maund about 1662. She was born about 1647. Records of Norfolk Co show an assignment from Andrew Etheridge and wife Ann to John Cherry on 6 May 1699. There is a deed dated 1 March 1665, recorded 25 February 1666, from Richard and Joan Yates of “Elizabeth River in ye county of Lower Norfolk” to John Cherry, taylor, also of Elizabeth River. The deed conveyed 350 acres on Deep Creek “being in ye southern branch of Elizabeth River” for 1,000 pounds of tobacco. This land was originally patented to Richard Yates on 6 March 1664. John also bought other land, in addition to that inherited as an elder son. He had about 595 acres at the time of his death, even though 105 acres of it was patented over a year after he died.

John obviously lived along Deep Creek in Lower Norfolk Co, and was a taylor and a farmer. He lived near John Slough, Thomas Slow (Slough), Thomas Richardson, and George Ballentine. John Cherry Sr and William Maund witnessed the will of W H Whelten in Lower Norfolk Co on 13 September 1690. By this time John's father had been dead twenty years (per JY), and John himself had a son named John. Hence he was called John Sr in 1690. John made his will in Norfolk Co on 12 January 1698 (or 1699), and it was recorded on 18 July 1699 in Norfolk Co. The will is partially destroyed and water damaged, but about half is legible. In it John mentioned his wife Rebecca, daughter Rebecca, and sons John and William. It also names Faithful and Samuel Cherry, but does not state the relationship. The will, found in Norfolk Co Deed Book 6, page 131, mentions land on Deep Creek and a plantation bought from Isaack Seaborne. The executrix was his wife Rebecca and witnesses were William Maund and “Rebeckah Cherry Jr” (his daughter). And in 1704 “widow Churry” collected quit rents of £600 in Norfolk Co. John had at least five children, but other evidence indicates he perhaps had nine children-

John Cherry III [C1a2], son of John Cherry Jr and Rebecca Maund, was born in 1671 in Lower Norfolk Co VA. He married Sarah Spring in Norfolk Co. She was born about 1705 in Norfolk Co. In 1704 he was listed in the Virginia Quit Rents with 150 acres. On the 10 June 1731 Tithable of Norfolk Co he was exempt because he had just turned 60. On 12 or 13 February 1747 John bought 100 acres on Biggs Creek from John Biggs and wife Sarah ____. John Cherry left his will in Norfolk Co dated 30 April 1754 which was probated in March 1755. John's will was witnessed by Joseph Biggs, Hillary Cherry, and John Ferebee. John Cherry could not sign his name, but made an “Χ” instead. In it he named his wife, children, and four grandchildren: Jonathan Cherry, Ufan Cherry, Ann Cherry, and Joel Cherry. His will did not mention possible son Samuel, nor say who the parents of these grandchildren were. John's children were-

c.    Bethia Cherry, b c1708

d.    Elizabeth Cherry, b c1711

e.    Affia Cherry, b c1714

John Cherry's will gave to some of his children “Twenty Shillings” and not “One Pound.” This would be the equivalent of someone today saying “100 cents” instead of “one dollar.”

See Samuel Cherry, Jesse Cherry, Titus Cherry, Sarah Cherry, and Jeremiah Cherry for early {Biggs} connections. (69,77,WD,NW)

John Cherry [C1a7b], son of William Cherry and Elizabeth _____ of Norfolk Co VA, was probably born about 1705 in Norfolk Co. John was the head of his own household in 1730 in Norfolk Co, listed as “John Chearey son of William Chearey.” He inherited his father's plantation in 1737. William Cherry's will, dated 22 November 1736 in Lower Norfolk Co VA, (Book 1, page 17, probated 20 May 1737), named son John. And in 1755 he may have been in Tyrrell Co NC. A John Cherry was on the tax list then. (57,77,WD,28p)

John Cherry IV [C1a3a], son of John Cherry III and Sarah Spring, was born about 1705 in Norfolk Co VA. He received 20 shillings from his father's 30 April 1754 will. Nothing was found concerning John as an adult in Norfolk Co. He died intestate, probably before 1754. John's father John III, in his 30 April 1754 will, mentioned a grandson named Jonathan Cherry, and granddaughters named Upham and Ann Cherry, and another grandson named Joel Cherry. Children of John IV were-*

1.    Jonathan Cherry, was probably born in Norfolk Co VA in the 1730s or 1740s.

2.    Uphan Cherry (girl), was probably born in Norfolk Co VA in the 1730s or 1740s.

3.    Ann Cherry, was probably born in Norfolk Co VA in the 1730s or 1740s.

4.    Bethia Cherry, was probably born in Norfolk Co VA in the 1730s or 1740s. She was named after her paternal aunt.

5.    Abigail Cherry, was probably born in Norfolk Co VA in the 1730s or 1740s. (WD,28p)

John Cherry [C1g4], son of Joseph Cherry of Norfolk Co VA, was born in 1717 in Norfolk Co. (WD)

John Cherry [C1a9c], son of Lemuel Cherry and Mary Courtney, was born about 1723 in Norfolk Co VA. He was given the “manner plantation” in his father's July 1754 will, along with a “lot of Coppers tools” (cooper's tools?) and a Negro man Jeam. John was named as an executor of his father's will, along with William Willis. On 25 March 1771 John purchased land left to his brother William Cherry in 1760. John later sold this land to Joseph Holliday for £27 (the transaction was recorded in Pitt Co). He was also probably the John Cherry who sold 140 acres on 6 February 1773 to Colin Clark in Beaufort Co, land on the north side of the Pamlico River. This deed was also signed by John's daughter Elizabeth Cherry . John was probably the John Cherry on the Tyrrell Co (now Martin Co) tax list of 1755. John married Mary Jordan, daughter of Jesse Jordan of Pitt Co. On 15 September 1762 William Swanner sold four acres to John Cherry, both of Tyrrell Co, for £50 Virginia currency. This land was bounded by Swanner's line, a swamp, and Troops Branch. Witnesses were Joseph Biggs and Titus Cherry . £50 for only four acres was quite expensive, so this land must have included buildings, or perhaps a house. Tyrrell Co deed book 3, page 21, records the sale of “640 acres lying in the county of Tyrell on the west side of Nuk Creek which was formerly called Bertie Co” from John Spear to John Cherry, for £40 Virginia currency; this transaction was recorded on 27 November 1753. And Book 4, page 379 recorded the sale of “120 acres lying in the county of Tyrell on the north side of Buck Swamp branch” from Southey Hayslip to John Cherry on 1 May 1763 for £14/8. Book 4, page 490, recorded 200 acres being sold to John from Thomas Beach on 28 October 1765. Much of this land was later sold to Thomas Eastwood (husband of Ruth Cherry ) and to Joseph Biggs (husband of Margaret Eastwood, Ruth Cherry's daughter), leaving John with abou 641 acres (one square mile). Therefore, John spent his last years in Tyrrell Co.

John Cherry left a will in Tyrrell Co, dated 11 March 1766 (Book 1, page 40), where it was probated in October that year. John could not write, and made his mark. He left his “plantation where I now live” to his son Daniel; son John received the plantation on Buck Branch. Witnesses were John Bennet, William Ward, and Ruth Eastward. The will named his wife Mary to be the executor, and named five children-*

John Cherry Jr [C1a9c3], son of John Cherry and Mary Jordan of Tyrrell Co NC, was born around 1743, probably in Tyrrell Co. He served 84 months in Revolutionary Army, from 1776 to 1783, and died prior to 1790. His term of service in the Revolution places his birth date at least by 1760. For this service he was paid £105/18/10. John married Sarah _____ and lived in Beaufort Co NC. He was listed on the Beaufort Co tax roster of 1786 as John Cherry Jr, but must have died soon afterwards since his son Jesse, as “heir to John Cherry,” assigned 640 acres on the south side of Red River in Davidson Co TN to Andrew Breakey on 3 May 1787. This was Grant 291. On 6 November 1766 in Beaufort Co John was allowed claim of £80 for a slave named Luke who was executed. On 20 July 1781 John purchased from Hugh Parker of Wilmington, NC, the boat “Snake” for 20 guineas. John had a son-

A Guinea was a non-existent British monetary unit, equal to 21 shillings (one pound is 20 shillings). Its usage would be equivalent to the U.S. pricing system of charging a few pennies less than a whole dollar, such as $9.98. (57,69,77,114, DK,WD,4t)

John Cherry [C1a9k1], son of Samuel M Cherry and Mary Moore, was born in the early 1760s in Pitt Co NC (although the 1800 census of Pitt Co shows him to be age 45 or older.) He was not named in his father's will, although the rest of his brothers and sisters were. John married Nancy Manning around 1785, and they lived in Pitt Co for the rest of their lives. She was about the same age as John. He was a farmer, and represented Pitt Co in the House of Commons. In 1790 he was the only John Cherry in the county, was married, and a young boy and two other females were in his household, and no slaves. In 1800 he was still the only John Cherry, and the young boy was no longer with him, but he still had his two daughters, and owned four slaves. In 1810 there was a second John Cherry as the head of his home in Pitt Co (John Cherry, son of Lemuel Cherry and Nancy Ann Moring, a close cousin to the elder John, the politician). In 1810 John the politician was living next door to William Cherry (brother of the other John), had three sons in their late teens/early twenties, two daughters under the age of 10, a wife younger than John, and owned two slaves. The other John Cherry had almost the same family profile in 1810, except that two of the three sons were in the next younger age bracket. The second John Cherry was near the end of the listing for the county. It appears that the census taker had listed the younger cousin twice (or had listed a third John Cherry ), and omitted John the politician in 1810. In 1810 and in 1820 the John who lived closer to Roderick Cherry was the younger cousin John. The 1820 census, though, does list politician John's wife Nancy. She was over age 45 or older, and had one young boy aged between 10 and 15 in her home (he could have been a grandson). The 1820 census of Pitt Co showed only one John Cherry in the county, age 26 to 44; this must have been the younger cousin.

A deed from Allen Moore (Book B, page 355) in February 1822 to “Nancy M Cherry widow of John Cherry” places John's death by February 1822. Since he was not found in the county in 1820, his death was probably before then, but after 9 August 1814 when he received land from his father (Book T, page 338). John died in Pitt Co. His wife Nancy was not found after 1820, so may have died in the decade after then, or lived with an adult child. John and Nancy had at least three children-

a.    Margaret Cherry, b c1782

b.    Sarah Cherry, b c1784

c.    John Cherry, b 1780s

d.    probably other children. (57,77,L,WD,7aehiz)

John Cherry [C1a3f1a], son of Theophilus Cherry of Norfolk Co VA, was named in his father's April 1804 will. There were three John Cherrys in Lower Norfolk Co VA in 1785, and since John's father had eight children, but only four or five of them were at home in 1785, John was likely living in his own home then. (28pa)

John Cherry [C1a9f2], son of Charles Cherry and Winifred Mercer, was born about 1768 in Beaufort Co NC. He married Mary _____ about 1789 or 1790 since the 1790 census showed no children, just John and one female. John received from his father's 1805 will the land where John was then living, land next to Samuel Boutwell and _____ Williams. John lived next to his brothers William, Jeremiah, and Mercer in Beaufort Co in 1810. He left his will in Beaufort Co dated 26 July 1836 (Book C, page 98); it was probated in March 1839, so he probably died early that year in Beaufort Co. Mary was not found as the head of her own home in 1840 in Beaufort Co, and in 1820 there was no female in John's household who would have been old enough to be the mother of his children. Therefore Mary probably died between 1815 and 1820. In 1820 in his household were two young men (Jared and Lemuel?), a young woman (Winifred?), and a young girl under the age of 10 (a granddaughter?). John named six children in his will-

John Cherry [C1a6c3b], son of James Cherry and Sarah _____, was born about 1770 in Tyrrell Co NC. He was living with his parents in 1790 in Martin Co, and was not yet married. He was not found in Martin Co in 1800 nor in 1810. (1aehp)

John Cherry [C1a7d4b], son of Lemuel Cherry and Sarah McPherson, was born about 1785 in Norfolk Co VA. He said he was born in TN in the 1850 Jackson Co TN census; this must be incorrect since his father does not appear to have moved to TN until the end of the 18th Century. John, with his brothers Wilson and Cary, was in the Battle of New Orleans on 7 & 8 January 1815. They served in Captain Henry West's Company, 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Militia (Infantry). John was living in Jackson Co in 1820. He married Nancy Odle and died in 1860 in Jackson Co. Nancy was born in 1800, daughter of Daniel Odle. Since there is a fifteen year age difference between them, and there is a large gap in the birth years of some of his children, and since John had no wife in his household in 1820, Nancy may be a second (or third?) wife. He was on the Jackson Co TN tax list in 1803. He apparently had many children, or else some of the children in the pre-1850 census records were step-children or were grandchildren-

John Cherry [C1a9j3], son of Lemuel Cherry and Nancy Ann Moring, was born in the 1780s in Pitt Co NC. He took his cousin John Cherry's seat in the House of Commons after cousin John died (1810 to 1822). John was one of two John Cherrys in Pitt Co in 1810 (the other was his older cousin, the politician son of Samuel Cherry). There was only one John Cherry in Pitt Co in 1820. He was born between 1776 and 1794, and was living between two Bell families, and had a wife of about the same age, and two boys born between 1805 and 1810. Because of the age of the boys, John must have been born in the late 1780s. His children in 1810 were-*

John Cherry [C1a9k1c], son of John Cherry and Nancy Manning, was born late in the 1780s in Pitt Co NC. He was probably dead by 1800 since he was not living with his parents in 1800. (57,77, 7ae)

John Cherry [C1a6e2g], son of Joshua Cherry and Martha R Keene, was born 1 December 1796 in Bertie Co NC. He grew up in Davidson and Rutherford Counties TN. (L)

John Cherry [C1a9f2d], son of John Cherry and Mary _____, was born in 1799 in Beaufort Co NC. He was called John Sr after his father's death, but John Jr before. He married Priscilla _____ ("Prucy" in 1850) before 1833. John and another male of the same age were in his own home in Beaufort Co in 1820; neither was married at the time. The other male was likely a brother; if so, all brothers are then accounted for in the 1820 census. John and Priscilla were living two doors from his sister Winifred in 1850 in the Tranter's Creek community of Beaufort Co with many of his Cherry relatives, and next to his sister Anna. Prucy was born in 1803 in NC. John left his will in Beaufort Co dated 21 July 1868; it was probated on 29 January 1870. The executor was Jeremiah R Cherry. Prucy was still living in Washington Township in Beaufort Co in 1870 (called “Prusia” then). John had two children, named in his will-*

1.    George W Cherry, b 1834 in Beaufort Co NC. He was still in the county in 1870, age 36, and was a farmer in 1850. (87,4n)

2.    Hester A Cherry, b 1843, in Beaufort Co NC, married _____ Ball by 1868; she probably had children. (4in)

There was an Olivia Cherry, age 16, living with John and Prucy in 1850. (87,4in)

John Cherry [C1a3f1f1], son of Maxey Cherry and Lydia Deal, was born between 1793 and 1804 in Norfolk Co VA. (28pam)

John Cherry [C1a3f6d], son of Robert Cherry and Mary Worsley, was born about 1794 in Edgecombe Co NC. (77,5h)

John Cherry [C1a6e6d], son of Abner Cherry, was probably born about 1800 in Martin Co NC. He may have been the John V Cherry of Randolph Co GA (the portion which became Stewart Co GA in late 1830) who was appointed to be in charge of a team to lay out a road from Lumpkin to Columbus on 26 September 1830. Others in charge William Dixon and James W Dunaway. (77,118,1aep)

John Cherry [unknown], was living in Gibson Co TN in 1840. He was born in the 1800s and was married to a woman born in the 1810s. From the ages of their two children in 1840, it would appear that John married about 1834. By 1840 their children were-*

1.    boy Cherry, b 1831-1835

2.    girl Cherry, b 1836-1840 (13k)

John Cherry [unknown] of Pitt Co NC, was born about 1805 in Pitt Co NC. He married Mary Ann Albritton about 1829. She was born about 1808 in NC, daughter of Luke Albritton who had served in the NC Legislature. John died about 1841 or 1842, and Mary Ann married Rippon Wedigan Ward on 23 February 1842 in Pitt Co. She and John Cherry had three sons and a daughter when she was widowed. This Cherry-Ward family was living in Pitt Co in 1850, eight doors from the William Cherry- Talitha Parker family in Parker's District. Rippon Ward raised his Cherry step-children, and died soon before 5 May 1883 when an article was printed in The Daily Reflector about him. John was probably the John Cherry who lived about five miles southeast of Greenville and sold land there in 1828 on which a poor-house was built. The John Cherry in Pitt Co in the 1830 census appears to be this John; the John Cherry in 1830 and his wfe agree with the ages of John and Mary Ann. In 1830 there was a grandmother or aunt in the house (age in the 60s in 1830), and two older teenage boys (too old to be children), plus a younger boy, born between 1821 and 1825.        John W Cherry [C1a9c1b3], son of James J Cherry, was born between 1795 and 1800 in either Martin Co NC or in Davidson Co TN. He married Elizabeth Boyer in Rutherford Co TN on 29 January 1818; bond was posted by Thomas Bragg, future husband of John's sister Catherine (Catherine and Thomas were married on 12 February 1818). Elizabeth was born 19 July 1798 in Stokes Co NC, daughter of Henry Boyer (born about 1769) and Margery (Marjory?) Mullikin (born 4 March 1777). In 1820 they were not listed in their own home, but instead John's father James Cherry had an extra young woman age 16 to 25 in his household who was not listed in the 1810 census. This may have been Elizabeth Boyer, living with her new husband John in his father's home. Elizabeth gave her age as 53 in the 1850 census of Linn Co MO, and was born in NC. By 1823 John and Elizabeth had settled in Howard Co MO, and in 1832 had moved to Linn Co. Some of the Bragg families of Rutherford Co TN had also settled in Howard Co. In 1830 there were John Cherry and Lewis Lilly, Henry Bragg, & Joseph Bragg families in the county. In 1840 there were William Cherry and the two prior Bragg families. The 1840 census of Linn Co also had a John Cherry family. John died at home in Linn Co on 29 November 1848 and was buried there in Magnolia Cemetery in an unmarked grave. Elizabeth died at her home in Linn Co in April 1860. Elizabeth Cherry, widow of John W Cherry, appeared before the Justice of the Peace of Linn Co MO and filed a claim for a land Grant as the widow of a war veteran. Her sister, Katherine Goodman, was one of the witnesses. John was a Tennessee Volunteer in the War of 1812. He entered on 27 September 1814 and was discharged on the following April 27. He served in Captain James Pace's Tennessee Volunteers, and was a soldier under General Jackson.

Census records show that John had 10 sons; nine were named in Elizabeth's request for a veteran land grant. The boys were all born in Howard or Linn Counties MO-*

He was listed as a son of Thomas on the tithable listing from Sugg's Mills to Deep Creek in June 1730. Jonas was not named in his father's 1748 will. Therefore he may have already received his inheritance, or died between June 1730 and April 1748. He did not appear on the 1785, nor the 1810 census of Norfolk Co. (77,EC,RM,L,90,1z,28pz)

Jonathan Cherry [C1a6b2], son of Faithful Cherry Jr, was born about 1734, either in Norfolk Co VA or in Tyrrell Co NC. He was named in his father's 9 February 1787 will as a son. On 7 January 1775 Jonathan Cherry bought 200 acres in Martin Co from Needham Bryan, land which already contained houses and other buildings. And on 6 March 1775 Thomas Beach of Martin Co sold to “Jonathan Cherry of the Province of NC & Co of Martin brick layer” 100 acres next to Beaver Dam swamp. Witnesses were Jesse Cooper and Jesse Cherry. Thomas Beach made his “Χ.” In 1779 Jonathan Cherry was on the Martin Co tax list. On 26 September 1779 Jonathan received 30 acres from NC “beginning at a pine on the N. side of the Beaver Dam Swamp,” and bordering Yarrell's property and Jonathan's existing property. On 20 September 1782 Jonathan bought 100 acres on the east side of Beaver Dam Branch from Arthur Wheatly of Martin Co, witnessed by Jesse Cherry (probably Jonathan's son or brother) and Sedwick Haslip.

Jonathan Cherry left a Martin Co will dated 26 July 1815 in which he named sons and daughters, but no wife; son Jesse and brother Joel were the executors. The will did not name son Jonathan Jr. It was proven in December 1818. In his will Jonathan named his granddaughter “Sinthy Luster” and grandsons Frederick Cherry and William Cherry. Jonathan signed his will. His children were-

Jonathan Cherry Jr [C1a6b2a], son of Jonathan Cherry “bricklayer of Martin Co” NC, was born in 1754, probably in Martin Co. Jonathan Cherry gave his “worthy friend” Joel Cherry (Jonathan Jr's uncle) his power of attorney on 29 September 1810 in Martin Co; We know this was Jonathan Jr because he could not sign his name, while his father could. And on 20 January 1811 Jonathan sold 133 acres at “bever dam swamp yarnells old corner” to Jonathan Ward. The transaction was signed by Joel Cherry for Jonathan. This land was next to Jesse Cherry's and Jonathan Cherry's property. Earlier, on 28 September 1810 Jonathan sold 50 acres in Martin Co to Edward Byrd, land on the north side of Beaver Dam Swamp; this was witnessed by Jesse Cherry (deed book F, page 21). Jonathan did make an attempt at signing, which looks like a child's attempt at making the letter W. An “Elder Jonathan Cherry” was the pastor of the Baptist church at Little Conetoe in Edgecombe Co in 1803. Perhaps the pastor was this Jonathan. Jonathan Cherry Jr moved to Bedford Co TN sometime after 1810. He had two sons, and probably others-

2.    William W Cherry, b 1777 (77,1z,5x)

Jonathan Cherry [C1e7c], son of Samuel Cherry of Norfolk Co VA, was born by 1795. (69,77,NW)

Joseph Cherry [C1g], son of immigrant John Cherry, was born about 1668 in Lower Norfolk Co VA; he was over the age of 60 in a tithable list in Norfolk Co VA on 10 June 1730. Joseph was in the June tithable list each year from 1730 through 1734. And on 22 March 1735 he witnessed the will of William Cherry. Joseph died sometime after then. He was a constable in the 1730s, His wife is not known, but some of his children were-

1.    Joseph Cherry Jr, b c1705

2.    Matthew Cherry, b a1710

3.    Martin Cherry, b a1715 (69,90)

4.    John Cherry, b 1717 (WD,69,77,90)

Joseph Cherry Jr [C1h1], son of Joseph Cherry of Norfolk Co VA, was born about 1705 in Norfolk Co. He probably married Elizabeth _____ and had children-*

a.    Thomas Cherry, b a1735

b.    Matthew Cherry, b c1743 Norfolk Co. (WD)

Joseph Cherry “of Norfolk County,” left a Norfolk Co will dated 23 May 1790; the will was probated on 17 September 1792. In the will (Book 3, page 88), witnessed by Wm Plummer, SamlΧ” Cherry, and William Ballance, it named “friend Thos Cherry and my granson Jas Cherry as executors.” Witness Thomas Cherry was likely Joseph's youngest brother, as it was common then in documents to call a brother or close relative as a “friend.” In 1785 there was only one Joseph Cherry and one Brian Cherry shown on the Federal census, and they lived two doors apart. Joseph named his wife Sarah, two children, and three grandchildren-

1.    Bryan Cherry

2.    Sarah Cherry

3.    boy Cherry, probably dead when his father's will was written in May 1790, had three children by then-

       a.    James Cherry, was named as a co-executor in his grandfather Joseph Cherry's May 1790 will. Therefore James was likely born by 1769. There is a marriage record in Norfolk Co between a James Cherry and Sarah Everage (Etheridge?), dated 11 January 1789. Surety was provided by Samuel McPherson. James made oath that Sarah was of lawful age. Therefore she was likely born about 1771 if she looked that young. In 1785 all eight McPherson families in the county lived in the section of the county between “the Northwest River to the Carolina line,” where a Lemuel Cherry lived. There were also Etheridge families in the neighborhood. Lemuel could be James' father. In 1785 there were four people in Lemuel's household; perhaps Lemuel's wife was dead in 1785, then Lemuel died by May 1790 when Joseph's will was written. James was not listed in the 1810 Norfolk Co census. (28pma)

       b.    Thomas Cherry

       c.    Judith Cherry (28p)

Joseph Cherry [C1a6b2a1], son of Jonathan Cherry Jr of Martin Co NC, was born about 1776 in Martin Co. We know he was a son of Jonathan Jr because on 1 May 1802 Jonathan gave property to Joseph “for love to son Joseph.” (77)

Joseph Cherry [unknown], born 17 December 1818, was bound over to Walter Hood, his guardian, in January 1824 in Hardin Co TN, and again on 20 June 1825 “until age 21.” (125,51,76)

Joseph Cherry [C1a9c1g2b], perhaps a son of Noel Cherry and Margaret Lilley, was born 17 December 1818. Since Noel, Franklin, and Joseph were not named as minor children in the court records just after Noel Sr died, Joseph, Noel Jr, & Franklin must have been the older ones. (Or perhaps they were NOT children of Noel?) (77)

Joseph Cherry [C1a3f6e1i], son of William Robert Cherry and Frances Elizabeth Savage, was born 14 February 1867 in Edgecombe Co NC. He married Georgiana Savage, and died on 16 October 1935. He was buried in the family graveyard near the town of Speed. They had three children-*

1.    Lucy Gorham Cherry, married Lucius Long Davenport. She also married Dr Earl E Pittman. Lucy had three children-*

       a.    Lucius Long Davenport Jr

       b.    Gladys Elizabeth Pittman

       c.    Edith Pittman (77)

2.    William Robert Cherry, married Addie Williams. (77)

3.    Gladys Cherry, married her second cousin Robert Pender Cherry, He was a son of Thomas Harmon Cherry and Catherine Mason Pender. They had two daughters-

       a.    Bobbie B Cherry

       b.    Gladys Elaine Cherry (77) (77,84,5r)

Joseph Alfred Cherry [C1a6e4e2], son of Jeremiah Cherry Jr and Mary Rebecca Cooper, was born about 1822 in Columbia, TN, and died young. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery north of town. (53)

Joseph Blount Cherry [C1a7f3c4], son of Solomon Cherry and Mary Cherry of Bertie Co NC and a brother of William Walton Cherry, was born about 1816 in Bertie Co (he was age 34 in the 1850 Bertie Co census, and 44 in 1860). Joseph was a planter, lawyer, and public official. He served in the NC House of Commons in 1848, 1850, and 1852, and in the state senate from 1856 to 1860. When the Civil War began, Joseph fought in the Confederacy even though he did not advocate separating the Union; his loyalties lay more with NC than with the Union. Joseph married Sarah Outlaw after 1840; the wife in the 1840 census was not yet age 20 (i.e., born between 1821 and 1825), but Sarah Outlaw was born in 1818 (she was age 22 in the 1850 census, and age 42 in 1860) in NC. Joseph and Sarah lived at his plantation “The Oaks,” which he bought from the widow of his brother William in 1850. Joseph was still living in the Windsor area of Bertie Co in 1860 and in 1870. In 1850 his half-sister Temperence Swain, Celia Walton (age 58), and two youngsters, possibly children of his brother William, were living with him. Temperence, and Celia Walton, were still living with Joseph in 1860. Joseph had five children, all born in Bertie Co-*

a.    George Outlaw Cherry, b 1840 after the summer in Bertie Co NC (he was not yet born when the 1840 census was taken). He was a Confederate veteran and was secretary to Governor Zebulon B Vance. He was not shown in his father's household in 1850 (was he living with grandparents?). George settled in Houston, TX after the Civil War. He married many times. In 1860 he was listed in the household of Joseph and Sarah, but was the last named child, not the first. Therefore he was probably from a first marriage of his father. (77,93, 6knq)

c.    Emily O Cherry, b 1845 (6nq)

d.    Jane/Mary E Cherry, b 1847 (6nq)

       1.    Solomon Cherry, b (21 May 1910 per Z) in Bertie Co NC, married Emma Mae Britt from Green Co NC. (Solomon lived at Windsor when he died in February 1975, per Z.) They are the parents of-*

               a.    Solomon Gilmer Cherry, b 26 Dec 1932 in Bertie Co NC. (77,6q) (77)

Because of the order the census taker had listed the children in the household in the 1850 census, it appears that Sarah was a second wife. There was a Celia Walton, age 58, living with Joseph and Sarah in 1850, and was listed between the five year old child and the three year old child. Temperance Swain, age 17, Joseph's half sister, was also living with Joseph and Sarah in 1850, and was listed following Cecelia Walton and before 3 year old Mary E Cherry. In 1860 Temperance was still living with Joseph and Sarah. (93,6iknq)

Joseph Carlton Cherry [C1a7f4e2a7], son of Joseph William Cherry and Pennaritta Jean Pritchard, was probably born in the 1880s in Bertie Co NC (he was not shown in his parents' home in the 1880 census). He married Janie Britt. They had two children-*

He was a coach maker, born in TN in 1833, and son of John G Gillespie and Ann _____. In 1860 Josephine and Blackburn lived close to her sister Sarah and her husband James S Martin. Blackburn died at the age of 78 in 1911 on Bear Creek Pike, of pneumonia. His wife was not mentioned in the obituary, so she may have died before him. They had at least two children-

1.    Annie Gorham, b 21 May 1867 in Edgecombe Co NC. She was a graduate of Littleton College and taught school until she married Sellers Mark Crisp at her parents' home near Battleboro on 27 May 1891. He was born in Pitt Co on 30 March 1865, probably a son of Silas Crisp and Sallie Eliza Edwards. They lived in Edgecombe Co for several years where five of their seven children were born. Around 1902 they moved to Falkland, NC, where Sellers died of a heart attack at home on 16 August 1926. Annie died 3 January 1935 at home. She and Sellers had seven children-*

Joshua Cherry [unknown], witnessed the 7 April 1760 will of John McCaskey in Tyrrell Co NC (the other witnesses were Francis Holley and Nathaniel Cooper). Joshua was likely at least 18 years old at the time, so must have been born by 1742, but possibly sooner. This is the earliest record of a Joshua Cherry in what was to become the Martin Co area of NC. The earliest Cherry settlers in the area were brothers Faithful and Job Cherry. Neither one named a son Joshua in their wills, but it is also known that both men did omitted some of their eldest children from their wills. Job was born in the early 1720s, probably about 1720 or 1721, and Faithful was born about 1710. Both could be Joshua's parent.

Joshua probably died in the Kershaw Co area of SC by 1798. His daughter Mary, in a 28 January 1798 Martin Co NC court record (Book A, page 124) appointed her brother Joel Cherry of Kershaw, SC power of attorney to recover money to be owing her from her “father Joshua Cherry's estate in SC.” Mary couldn't handle the matter herself because she was in the process of moving from Martin Co (to SC?). She signed the record. Therefore, Joshua had at least two children-*

a.    Mary Cherry, an adult in 1798

b.    Joel Cherry, an adult in 1798, was living in Kershaw Co SC in 1798. (DK)

Joshua Cherry [C1a6e2], son of Job Cherry and Abiah Ventures, was born 15 February 1761 in Tyrrell Co NC, in the part which became Martin Co. (Source 78 & WD says Joshua's parents were Jesse Cherry and Julia _____; source 69 & LJ says his parents were Job Cherry and Abiah Ventures; source 57 says his parents were Jesse Cherry and Mary Reddick. Because of the close ties in witnessing land purchases between Joshua and Job Cherry and Job Cherry Jr, Job Cherry and Abiah Ventures must be the parents.) For his Revolutionary War pension Joshua stated in Bedford Co TN on 6 August 1832 that he was born in Martin Co NC on 15 February 1761 (although Martin Co was not formed until 1774 from Halifax and Tyrrell Counties). He must have spent much of his youth in Martin Co.

Joshua was living in or near Williamston, Martin Co in 1787, according to the state census. On 20 July 1778 Joshua enlisted in the new Revolutionary Army in Child's Company in Martin Co for nine months; he was living in Martin Co when he enlisted, and was discharged as a private. He later enlisted in Pitt Co in 1780 as a substitute for another soldier, James Cottenhead of Pitt Co.

Joshua married Martha R Keene about 1784 in Bertie Co; Bertie Co is the county neighboring Martin Co to the north, across the Roanoke River. Martha was born in August 1765, probably in NC. If she was the same wife in Bedford Co TN in 1820, she was born before 1776. Her parents were George Keene and Elsie Holly.

Joshua and his family were living in Martin Co in 1787. At that time he had two boys, a wife, and two other females (daughters?) in his house. In 1790 he and his family were the only Joshua Cherry in Bertie Co; there were no boys in the household in 1790, but there were still three females. This was the only Joshua Cherry family in the state in 1790. On 14 November 1795 Job Cherry Sr and Joshua Cherry, “both of Martin Co,” sold 150 acres to David Carraway1 Job signed with an Χ and Joshua signed. Joshua does not appear in Martin Co in the 1790 and 1800 census records, yet the 1795 land sale says he lived in the county. Therefore he must have lived just across the county line to the north.

Joshua had moved to Davidson Co TN (in the portion which became Rutherford Co in 1803, and then Bedford Co in 1808) between the 1795 land sale and 1800; he was not on any 1800 census of NC. On 25 September 1808 Joshua Cherry of Sumner Co TN swore that “Prince Orrange Wright” died in the NC Line of Service and was a nine month soldier in the 3rd NC Regiment with Joshua, and swore that Wright was taken sick and was “carried to the Auspittle at New Windsor where he died.” In 1811 Joshua was listed on Sumner Co TN's tax list. His father's will of 1811 did not say where Joshua was living. And on 25 July 1814 “William Brown of the county of Caldwell State of KY” sold 350 acres in Caldwell Co to “Joshua Cherry of the state of Tennessee Sumner Co” for $1,000 (Caldwell Co Deed book B, page 67). This was land on the waters of the dry fork of Eddy Creek, and next to land of James Cage (see the will of John Butler for a possible connection to the Cage family). Joshua's Caldwell Co land purchase was witnessed by George Russell and Job Cherry. Witness Job Cherry must have been Joshua's brother Job Cherry Jr .

On 9 April 1818 “Joshua Cherry of the State of Kentucky & County of Caldwell” sold his 350 acres in Caldwell Co for $2350 to John Wilson, and apparently moved to Bedford Co TN; William Mercer was a witness to this sale (Book B, page 510). On 6 August 1832 Joshua applied for a military pension in Bedford Co; he did not sign, but made his Χ mark instead. Joshua was aged 71 then. The pension was $60 per year. On 9 September 1838 he asked to have his pension transferred to Marengo Co AL, where he had gone to live with his son Jared in the summer of 1835. Joshua had first tried to get his pension transferred on 31 July 1835, but for unknown reasons, the transfer was never completed until 4 March 1838. In both changes of address for his pension, Joshua also did not sign, but made his Χ mark. Joshua died in 1841 in AL. By 1787 he appears to have had four children, and more after then-

Jarrard William Cherry, his guardian, was discharged from the guardianship duties in March 1846 because “Joshua Cherry, late a minor,” assumed the responsibility for himself. Joshua was not living in Sumter Co in 1850, so may have already moved to TX. He was dead when his father's will was written on 27 October 1868. Thomas was born in NC in 1821, and was probably a son of Samuel Williams and his wife Dicey, age 71 and 67, who lived three doors from Thomas in 1850. In 1850 Thomas and Julia were living in Pitt Co in Haddock's District and by then had four children. Julia died in the latter 1850s, probably in Pitt Co. Their seven children were-*
