f.     Pervin Turpin (boy), b 1840-1844 in Dyer Co TN. He was shown as Pervin Turpin in the 1850 census (age 10), but was probably the William Turpin (age 26 in 1870) who married Nancy Ann Wright in Dyer Co on 18 February 1863; Caroline Buck's family was the only Turpin family in the county, so Pervin's name was probably William Pervin Turpin. (L,44knq)

The 1850 census gave his name as “Richd" and in 1860 he was “Richard.” He married in Dyer Co to Ann Eliza Harris on 22 September 1863, and also in Dyer Co to Louisa T Hassill on 13 June 1864.         Tempy Carroway [C1a6e5a1], daughter of Tempy Kennedy and _____ Carroway, was born before March 1822, and probably in the 1810s, in Martin Co NC. She was named in her grandmother Ruth Cherry's March 1822 will. (91)

Alexander Blair Cathey [C1a6e4f1da2], daughter of Theo Adeline Vaughan and Alexander Blair Cathey, was born 19 April 1935 in Columbia, TN. (55)

A C Cherry [C1a9k5f8], daughter of Lemuel Cherry and Pheny Perlinah Smith, was born in 1857 in Pitt Co NC. Nothing else is known of her. (L)

A J Cherry [unknown], married Rachael A McCauly in Haywood Co TN on 17 December 1861. He apparently died by 1867 (in the Civil War?), because she married D D Mays on 5 February 1867 in Haywood Co. Rachel was born about 1843. (29m)

Aaron Cherry [C1a3f], son of John Cherry III and Sarah Spring (son of Samuel Maund Cherry and Frances Ballentine, per thigpen), was born in 1717 in Norfolk Co VA. He lived in Bertie Co NC in 1755, 1757, and 1769 since he was on the county tax lists then. Aaron married Mary Pierce. If she was the mother of his children, she must have been born by the early 1720s. Aaron died without a will. After his death, his widow Mary married James Warren in Bertie Co on 21 June 1788 (see Bethia Cherry). James later provided the bond for the marriage of his step-son Thomas Cherry and Thomas' second wife Rachel Outlaw. Aaron had the following children (order probably incorrect)-

1.     Theophilus Cherry, b late 1730s?

2.     Erastus Cherry, b c1745

3.     Sarah Cherry, b a1750

4.     Rebecca Cherry, b a1750

5.     Frances Cherry, b a1750

6.     Robert Cherry, b 1749

7.     George Cherry, b a1750

8.     Solomon Cherry, b c1750

9.     Thomas Cherry, b c1755

10.   John Cherry?, was a witness to possible brother Robert Cherry's 1809 Edgecombe Co will. Robert had a son named John who received an inheritance in the will, so shouldn't have been a witness to the same will. Perhaps witness John Cherry was a brother of Robert. (95,JY)

11.   William Cherry (was named as an uncle to Solomon's son William Walton Cherry (source 93). William was graduated from the University of NC in 1800 in a class of three, was a trustee of the university from 1804 to 1809, and had a brilliant career as an attorney until his early death at the age of 27. Therefore his birth date was after 1782. Could he be the William Cherry who married Peggy Baker in Bertie Co on 13 November 1801?) There was no William Cherry in Bertie Co in 1810. (57,93,L,WD,6meht)

Aaron Cherry [C1a3f2a], son of Thomas Robert Cherry and Sarah Rhodes, was born in 1760 in Bertie Co NC. Aaron was living in Bertie Co in 1781 since he was on the county tax roster then, and was still there in most of the 1790s (a son was born there). Aaron moved to Edgecombe Co near the end of the 1790s. He was in Edgecombe Co in 1800 through 1830. In 1830 he was living close to Charles Wilkinson and Lunsford R Cherry, had ten slaves, and was apparently married, with no children in his household. Aaron married in the early 1790s. He left a will in Edgecombe Co dated 16 January 1835 (Book F, page 182). In it he named his wife Elizabeth and children. Aaron died in Edgecombe Co on 1 October 1835 and his estate was in probate the following month. His executors were Charles W Knight and Jesse C Knight. Aaron gave to his son Lunsford R Cherry a Negro Elisha after Aaron's wife's death, to son Lewis K Cherry he gave the “land and plantation whereon I at present reside” after wife Elizabeth dies, and a Negro boy named Ben, and to daughter Sarah R Jones “my Negro woman Hatty & her increase, and my Negro girl Milly & her increase after the death of my beloved wife Elizabeth Cherry.” Aaron named his “worthy friends” Charles W Knight and Jesse C Knight to be the executors.

Aaron married Elizabeth Holmes Knight on 22 July 1798. She was born 3 March 1773 and died on 14 January 1841, daughter of John Joshua Knight and Ann Lucretia Cherry [unknown] (per 77 & PA). James Knight, in his 20 July 1844 will, made a gift to the “2 eldest sons of Linsford R Cherry .” William R Cherry acted as security. Elizabeth's will (Book F, page 250), dated 12 March 1840, was probated in February 1841 in Edgecombe Co. She left all property to her daughter Sallie, and a legacy of $1,000 to the heirs of son Lewis. In 1840 she was not the head of her household, so must have been living with one of her children. Elizabeth's obituary was also noted in the January 16 edition of the Tarboro Press. Aaron had two sons under the age of 10 by 1800 (and 15 slaves). He and Elizabeth had three children-

1.     Lunsford Rhodes Cherry, b 22 Jul 1798

2.     Lewis Knight Cherry, b 21 October 1799

3.     Sarah Rhodes Cherry, b 30 Jul 1802

On 26 January 1846 Nancy Ward, Lydia Austin, Joseph John Porter, Nancy Porter, Joseph John Pippin, James Knight, John Knight, Celia L Staton, Jesse C Knight, Lunsford R Cherry, and Sally R Jones sold their interest in the estate of William W Knight deceased to Charles W Knight (Edgecombe Co deed book 24, page 223). All names here mentioned concerning the estate sale must have been heirs to the late William W Knight. Since Lunsford's wife Elizabeth Knight had died in 1841, before her father's estate was settled, Lunsford inherited his wife's inheritance, and then sold it to a brother-in-law in 1846. Not all of the sellers were children of William W Knight; some must have been grandchildren, or children-in-law as was the case with Lunsford. (57,77,83,64,94, 95,L,5pehij,6t)

Aaron Cherry [C1a3f9d], son of Thomas Cherry and Rachel Outlaw, was born in the latter half of 1795 in Bertie Co NC. He was named in his father's September 1812 will, and was living in Snake Bite Township in Bertie Co in 1870, when he was 74. In 1850 he was single (age 54), living four doors from Mrs Elizabeth Cherry (age 63, and perhaps a widow of one of his brothers?), and the James Duers family (age 66) with whom Elizabeth was living. In 1840 this same Elizabeth was living between William J Cherry and Theophilus Cherry ; Aaron was then still unmarried, living close to his brother James Cherry . Aaron married Elizabeth Harmon in Bertie Co on 4 November 1852. Bond was provided by William J Cherry, and witnesses were Jeremiah Bunch Jr, Richard T Harmon, and Charles Harmon. Elizabeth was born in 1824 in NC. In 1860 Aaron and his family were living three doors from his younger brother Thomas . By 1860 Aaron and Elizabeth had three daughters, all born in Bertie Co-*

Aaron Cherry [C1a7f3a11], son of Levi Cherry and Sarah _____ of Edgecombe Co NC, was born about 1800 in Edgecombe Co, and was named as an heir in his mother's 1835 estate records. (Aaron was: age under 10 in the 1810 Edgecombe Co census; age between 16 and 26 in the 1820 Edgecombe Co census; age in the 20s in the 1830 Edgecombe Co census; age in the 40s in the 1840 Edgecombe Co census; age 53 in the 1850 Edgecombe Co census, while his wife was age 54). Aaron married Eliza _____ by 1820. She was born in NC in 1796, and in 1830 they were still in Edgecombe Co, two doors from his mother. He was too old to be a son of any of Levi's sons, and because his home was so close to Sarah, it is assumed that Aaron was her son. Aaron and Eliza had no children by 1830 or 1840. In 1850 he was still in Edgecombe Co. In 1850 Mrs Anna Thigpen (Anna Cherry, Aaron's sister) was living nearby. Living with Aaron and Eliza was Eliza Harris, age 18. Aaron died on 15 November 1858, “age about 60,” from burns. (77,5pjkn)

Abigail Cherry [C1a9m], daughter of Lemuel Cherry and Gatsey Ann Llewellyn, was born about 1742 in Beaufort Co NC. She was alive in July 1754 when her father's will was written. (57,WD,4p)

Abner Cherry [C1a6e6], son of Job Cherry and Abiah Ventures, was born about 1768 in Tyrrell Co NC. He was not the head of his own home in 1790, but by 1800 had married and was living in Martin Co near his father's household. Abner was named in his father's will as an executor in February 1811. He inherited a lot and house in Williamston, “formerly belonging to Jonathan Cherry.” On 27 October 1806 Abner sold two Negro girls named Silvey and Besse, aged about 17, to James Everett Jr for £450. This transaction was witnessed by James Ward, John Ward, and Jesse Morris. The Wards may have been relatives of Sarah Biggs; see the Related Families page. Abner also was an executor, along with Darling Cherry, for the estate of John Winberry in 1815 in Martin Co.

On 10 November 1807 Abner Cherry sold 96½ acres to George Roebuck, both of Martin Co, land bounded on one side by property of William Biggs. He was still in Martin Co in 1810. In 1832 an Abner Cherry won land tracts in the 1832 “give away” of the Cherokee Indian land, in Bibb Co GA. Abner's wife was born circa 1775 and they had three children by 1800, and at least eight by 1810. There is a marriage record in Bibb Co between an Abner Cherry and Sarah Trent dated 25 February 1828. Because the Abner of this biography was by this time about 60 years old, this 1828 marriage could have been of a son (or grandson?). The senior Abner had at least eight children (some ages may be for the wrong child)-

Aby V Cherry [unknown], probably a daughter or granddaughter of Joshua Cherry or his brother Job Cherry Jr, was born in NC in 1802. Perhaps her name was actually Abiah Ventures Cherry, named after the mother of Joshua and Job. Aby V Cherry married William Parker in Caldwell Co KY on 6 February 1829. Joshua and Job, both lived there in the mid-1810s (Caldwell Co deed book B, page 67), so Aby could have been a descendant of either. William Parker was not in the 1830 Caldwell Co census, but a Robert Parker was; he was the only Parker family in the county. William Parker was the head of his household in 1840, and in 1870. He was born in NC in 1805, and by 1850 they had six children,, all born in Caldwell Co-*

Ben Cherry [unknown], married Jessie Milligan in Hardin Co TN on 31 October 1878. (9m)

Benjamin Cherry [C2] of Ireland came to Norfolk Co VA soon before 1740. He was an adult when he arrived, and at that time may have already had some children. Therefore he must have been born by about 1710. Ben's sons were-* #1-3

a.     William Cherry [C2a], was probably born in Ireland in the 1730s, by 1740. (FC)

b.     Joel Cherry [C2b], probably born in Ireland in the 1730s, was killed in the Revolutionary War. (FC)

c.     Andrew Cherry [C2c], probably born in the 1730s, moved to NJ and enlisted on the American side during the Revolution, and later moved to Huntingdon Co PA. His family later migrated to OH Territory. One of Andrew's grandsons married Maria Peterson, daughter of Peter Peterson, and named his son Peter Peterson Cherry [C2c#&] -- who became a famous historian of the Western Reserve.(FC)

d.     Benjamin Cherry II [C2d], b 1744 (FC)

The Stuart Uprising (see note below) caused the Scottish aristocracy to flee into Ireland from Scotland, and thence to the Virginia Colony. This brought four brothers to Norfolk Co. The Cherrys of Macon County IL are descendants of Benjamin Cherry [C2].

In North Carolina, where some of the descendants finally settled, the 1790 Federal Census has the family name Cherry more than any other surname. Of the four brothers, William Cherry [C2a] became a professional soldier fighting in the French & Indian Wars, then in the Revolution, and later in Mexico. Many of his descendants settled in and around Dallas, TX. Joel Cherry [C2b] was killed in the Revolution. Andrew Cherry [C2c] moved to NJ, where he enlisted, but later moved to PA. His family later migrated to Ohio Territory. (One of Andrew's grandsons married Maria Peterson, daughter of Peter Peterson, and named his son Peter Peterson Cherry [C2c#&1]-- who became a famous historian of the Western Reserve.) Benjamin Cherry [C2], who was registered in Norfolk Co VA in 1740, moved to Chester County PA with his son Ben Cherry II [C2d], who was born in 1744 in Norfolk Co. Ben II married Mary Peterson, and English woman, in 1764.

It was Scottish custom to name the first son for the paternal grandfather and the second for the maternal grandmother. Thus Benjamin Cherry II's first son, born in Chester County PA in 1765, became Benjamin Cherry III [C2d1] and his brother, born in 1767, was named Peterson Cherry [C2d2]. Benjamin Cherry II had a number of daughters. When he died in 1789, his son Ben III took over as head of the family and reared his young sisters and cared for his mother.

The PA tax lists show Benjamin II's record. In 1765 he was renting a home in Ridley Township, Chester Co. In 1766 he owned his home, was a shoemaker, with a horse. In 1769 he had become a cordwainer (a maker of fine shoes), owned 11 acres, a cow, a horse, and three sheep. By 1779 he owned 100 acres. Also, PA Archives (Series 5, Volume 4, page 601) of 1785 lists him as having been a Private from Bedford Co PA in the Revolution.

The 1790 Federal census for PA lists young Ben Cherry III as having no young males in his family, but had 10 females in his home. They probably included an infant daughter, his mother, and seven sisters. Brother Peterson Cherry, who lived nearby, was listed as having one young male in his household. The brothers sold their inheritance in PA and moved to Rowan Co NC later in 1790, in time to be picked up in that state's Federal census, which listed them just as PA had.

In a few years Ben and Peterson moved to Franklin Co GA, land recently ceded by the Cherokee Nation. Each person was entitled to two draws for free land, after residing in the county one year, being married and the father of at least one child. However, Ben and Peterson failed to win, and so purchased 100 adjoining acres each at $1.00 per acre. Here Benjamin Cherry IV [C2d1b] was born on 26 January 1790. In 1808 Ben Cherry III and Peterson Cherry sold their plantation, as did neighbor William Cherry (a cousin?), and migrated northwest into Overton Co TN, where Ben III's son Peterson Cherry was born. Again they purchased 100 acres each on the banks of Thistle Carrier Creek, all three having mutual boundaries.

When Benjamin III died in 1830, his heirs were Benjamin Cherry IV (called Jr); Peterson Cherry (a son born in Overton Co TN in 1808); and Russell _____ (presumably the husband of Ben III's first child, a daughter). At that time in the 19th Century, a woman's portion would likely have gone to her husband's care.

Benjamin Cherry IV fought with General Jackson in the War of 1812, but temporarily deserted in Florida along with many other Tennesseeans in order to go home and get their crops in. After the harvest, they went down the Tennessee River to rejoin Jackson and fought in the Battle of New Orleans. In 1819 Benjamin IV decided to go to the new land opening up in IL, and with his bounty land grant settled in Sangamon Co on virgin land near Riverton, IL. After his father's death in 1830 he returned to TN to bring his mother and a number of slaves to Sangamon Co, where the slaves were given their freedom, but continued to live on the farm. Brother Peterson settled in Macoupin Co, IL where he brought up a large family, including a son also named Peterson Cherry who fought in the Civil War.

On 11 July 1820 Benjamin Cherry IV married Elizabeth Strickland, a daughter of Joseph Strickland, in Sangamon Co. Their first son broke the tradition when he was named Wyatt Cherry for Elizabeth's brother. Wyatt Cherry, born in 1821, married Susan Hall, daughter of Garland Hall and Penelope Strickland. Other children of Ben IV were: James Cherry ; Clemmon Cherry, who died at age 23; Elmyra Cherry, born in 1830, married David Huckleberry on 19 November 1848; and Martha Cherry, born in 1824, married William Allen on 30 June 1842.

Benjamin Cherry IV deeded 60 acres of his farm to son Wyatt Cherry and sons-in-law David Huckleberry and William Allen as wedding gifts. (The Allens died leaving six of seven young children, who were divided among the relatives, the eldest son making his home with his grandfather Benjamin Cherry, and another with his aunt Huckleberry.)

Son Benjamin Cherry V was born in 1837, and married Eliza Barnes. His son Charles Cherry worked in a watch factory in Springfield, but became lost from the family history. Finally a seventh child was born to Ben and Elizabeth, little Willis, who apparently died in infancy. When Ben Cherry IV died on his farm he was buried in Springfield's Oak Hill Cemetery, a plot now (1980) owned by the Huckleberry granddaughter, Erma Ciesler of Springfield. Elizabeth went to make her home with son Wyatt on the Hall homestead, where she died in July 1878. She is buried in the Hall Cemetery in Blue Mound, Macon Co IL.

Wyatt Thomas Cherry married Susan Hall in Blue Mound on 20 September 1848. They lived with his parents for a few years and then after the death of Garland Hall they moved to Blue Mound. Susan had inherited a share of her father's holdings, and Wyatt had homesteaded adjoining land. The children of Wyatt and Susan Cherry were all born in IL: Amos Cherry, born in 1849; Benjamin Alfred Cherry, born in 1852; John Alvin Cherry, born in 1854; Thomas Wyatt Cherry, born in 1857; David Willis Cherry, born in May 1860; Margaret Cherry, born in 1863; George Cherry, born in 1867; and James Hall Cherry, born in 1869. Living with Wyatt and Susan in 1860 in Macon Co IL was James Hall (Susan's brother?), age 42, Andrew Allen (son of Martha Cherry who had married William Allen), age 14, and Tempy Malor, age 40; Tempy and James were born in TN, and Andrew was born in IL.

Wyatt Cherry died 14 January 1903 and his wife Susan Hall died in 1894. They are buried in Hall Cemetery with a joint gravestone, near the graves of Garland Hall and Elizabeth Cherry. Many of Wyatt's children did not marry. One married son moved to Sand Pointe, ID, where two children were born but no grandchildren. Thomas pioneered to NE, where he married Mary Frances Sinnard of Christian Co IL, and then they homesteaded in northeast Wisconsin in 1904. They were parents of six children and many of their descendants still live in and around Porterfield and Marionette, WI. Several of Wyatt's sons helped to build the Union Pacific Railroad and were at Promontory Point, UT when the final “golden spike” was driven. James Hall Cherry, Wyatt's youngest son, remained at home.

On 24 January 1897 James married Mary Jane Call in Dexter, Effingham Co IL. They lived in Lovington for a time, where children Nellie Maretha Cherry was born and died (1898 - 1899); Orlan Alfred Cherry was born 29 May 1901, and drowned in the Sangamon River in 1914; Floyd Alvin Cherry was born 15 September 1904; Frieda Maude Cherry was born 18 March 1907; Lola Bernice Cherry was born 12 December 1909; Harland David Cherry was born 11 March 1912, and died in 1995 in Sacramento, CA; Martha Elizabeth Cherry was born 2 November 1914; and Ilda Kathleen Cherry was born 2 June 1921. The only grandchildren of James and Mary are Frieda's daughter Mrs Mary Oviatt (who was living in Lone Pine, CA in 1995 and who has six sons and one daughter; one son is Kevin Oviatt of Twentynine Palms, CA) and Ilda's three daughters: Gloria, Judith (who lived in Florida in 1995) and Sarah Jones. All three Jones girls are now grandmothers themselves. Still residing in Decatur, IL (in 1980) are sons Harland and Floyd Cherry, and daughter Martha Cherry Weaver.

The Stuart Uprising (James I of Scotland 1603-1625 was Queen Elizabeth's heir; he was a Stuart) incurred large debts and the monarchy was forced to raise taxes. In 1642 war broke out between Charles I and much of Parliament, resulting in the abolishment of the monarchy and the execution of Charles I in 1649. Oliver Cromwell soon became “The Lord Protector” during the Cromwell period (1653-1658). Before and during this dark period in British history, there were high taxes and political persecution (per Encyclopedia Britannica). (JY,60n,67q)

Benjamin Cherry II [C2d], son of immigrant Benjamin Cherry Sr [C2], was born in Norfolk Co VA in 1744. He moved to Chester Co PA with his father, and probably there he married Mary Peterson, an English woman, about 1764 in Chester Co. Ben was found on the Chester Co tax rosters in 1765, 1766, and in 1769. He was a shoe cobbler, and by 1779 he owned 100 acres. He died in Chester Co in 1789, but was buried in Bedford Co where his sons had moved. Benjamin and Mary had two sons and many daughters-*

1.     Benjamin Cherry III [C2d1], b 1765 in Chester Co PA (his father was on the Chester Co tax roster during those years). He was found in Bedford Co PA in the 1790 census, with his brother Peterson living close by. (Chester Co is in southeast PA, and Bedford Co is six counties to the west, also bordering MD on the south.) PA Archives (Series 5, Volume 4, page 601) of 1785 lists Ben as having been a Private from Bedford Co PA in the Revolution, so between 1779 and 1785 he had moved westward six counties. By 1790 Ben had married and had one daughter, then moved to Rowan Co NC that year, in time to again be in that county's 1790 Federal census. After a few years Ben, his family, and brother Peterson's family moved to Franklin Co GA (chk 1800-1820 GA census). In 1808 Ben and brother Peterson sold their GA land and moved to Overton Co TN. Ben died in 1830, probably in Overton Co before the summer census was taken. His heirs were his two sons and his daughter. Ben had at least three children, but probably more from the close proximity of the Cherry neighbors of son Peterson in Macoupin Co IL-*

        a.   girl Cherry, b a1790 in Chester Co PA. She was probably one of the ten females in her father's home in Rowan Co NC in 1790. She married James Russell. He was named in Ben Cherry III's 1830 probate records, and was one of the four men who bought 100 acres in Overton Co on 28 April 1818 for $385. The other three were Peter Cherry (no doubt Peterson), Benjamin Cherry, and Harvey Cherry. They were shown as “all of Overton County.” (FC,70z,69a) Chk Overton Co for James Russell.

        b.   Benjamin C Cherry IV b 26 Jan 1790 in Rowan Co NC (1860 census says GA, 1790 census says Rowan Co, 1850 census says NC). He fought with General Jackson in the War of 1812, but temporarily went AWOL in Florida along with many other Tennesseeans in order to go home and get their crops in. After the harvest, they went down the Tennessee River to rejoin Jackson and fought in the Battle of New Orleans. On 28 April 1818 Ben, and his uncle Peterson Cherry, & Harvey Cherry, and brother-in-law James Russell “all of Overton County,” bought 100 acres in Overton Co from Jacob Beason for $385. In 1819 Benjamin IV decided to go to the new land opening up in IL, and with his bounty land grant settled in Madison Co, in what was to become the north central part of Sangamon Co on virgin land near Riverton. (Sangamon Co was formed out of the North West Territory in 1821.) After his father's death in 1830 he returned to TN to bring his mother and a number of slaves to Sangamon Co, where the slaves were given their freedom, but continued to live on the farm. On 11 July 1820 Benjamin Cherry IV married Elizabeth Strickland, daughter of Joseph Strickland and Louise _____ in Madison Co. They were both found in Madison Co in the 1820 census (the only other Cherry in IL in 1820 was Willis Cherry in White Co). Elizabeth was born 12 May 1799 in SC (1850 census says NC). Their first son broke the tradition when he was named Wyatt for Elizabeth's brother. Benjamin Cherry IV deeded 60 acres of his farm to Wyatt Cherry, David Huckleberry and William Allen as wedding gifts.
