This Samuel Parris was the Village Priest involved in the Salem Witchtrials. He was a merchant in Barbados, moved to Salem Village (Danvers)Mass. where he served a congregation from 19 Nov 1689-1692. He was firedin 1692. He came from Barbados with a daughter Elizabeth 9yrs old and an11yr old Neice Abigail Williams and a part negro/Carb Indian slave namedTituba, who was married to John Indian and was implicated as a Witch butnot tried. He went to Harvard College but did not remain to graduate. Before preaching at Salem Village he preached at Stowe.

NEXUS: Probably attended Harvard College 1672-74. He was a merchant inBoston and then in 1689 he accepted a position as minister in SalemVillage, Mass., where he was subsequently caught up in the witchcrafttrials.
"'...From Mr. Paris' position, as pastor of the Salem Village Church, hemay have come in contact with cases in a perfunctory way which gave himunpleasant publicity. In 1695 a council met at Salem Village to conferabout the witchcraft matter as related to Mr. Paris and his people.Shortly after this he left the church and the place. He became a trader, went to Watertown, then Concord; but his stay in each place was short. Hethen went to Dunstable, where for a few months he preached. He at lengthwent to Sudbury, and died there about 1720. Thus originated the Salemwitchcraft, and thus passed away the man who received notoriety by it....

'Mr. Paris was the son of Thomas Paris of London. He went to HarvardCollege, but did not remain to graduate. Before preaching at SalemVillage he preached at Stowe. He was twice married, his first wife dyingin 1696, at about the age of forty-eight, his second wife in 1719. Hisfirst wife was buried at Danvers.

His son NoyesParis, born 1699, took his first degree at Harvard College, 1721. Hisother son, Samuel, was born 1702.

'After Mr. Paris came to Sudbury, we conclude that for a time he taughtschool there. The records state, that in 1717, Mr. Samuel Paris was toteach school four months of the year at the school-house on the west sideof the river, and the rest of the year at his own house. If he was absentpart of the time, he was to make it up the next year. In Book III,Sudbury Records, we have the following statement, witht eh date May 25,1722:

'These may certify that ye 28 pounds that ye town of Sudbury agreed togive Mr. Samuel Paris late of Sudbury, for his last yeares keeping schoolin sd town, is by Mr. John Clapp treasurer for said town by his self andby his order all paid as witness my hand John Rice excuter of ye lastwill and Testament of ye sd Mr. Paris.'

'There are graves of the Paris family in the old burying ground atWayland. Towards the southeast side of it stands a stone with thefollowing inscription: "Here lyes ye Body of Samuel Paris, Who died July27th 1742 in ye 8th year of his age."
