Oman Whatley a Revolutionary Soldier was born in Bute
County, North Carolina, May 8, 1751, and died in Georgia,
December 1, 1798. Oman and his wife Judith (Thornton) Whatley
are found to have lived in Richmond and in Princess Ann,
Virginia at one time.

He fought in the Revolutionary War and lived in Walton and
Wilkes (later named Oglethorpe) Counties, Georgia.
He received Bounty Land Grants in Georgia for his
Revolutionary Service, and his widow later received land in
Lee County in the Land Lottery of Georgia in the year 1827.
Oman Whatley's Will was recorded in Oglethorpe County, Georgia
January 1, 1799.

His wife, Judith Thornton, was born in North Carolina February
8, 1751, and died November 4, 1842. See documented letter
proving Judith's maiden name, on the following page. The
children listed in Oman Whatley's Will were: Oman Bradley,
Wyatt, Tabitha Whitlock, Wilson, Polly, Burwell, Charity,
Rebecca and Elizabeth Whatley.

From the "History of Harris County, Georgia, 1827": (Footnote
1*)

"Onan Whatley (should be transcribed Oman), a kinsman of Rev.
Samuel

Whatley, gave the land to Samuel and his deacons for the
Whatley Mill Church .... Samuel continued to preach here until
his death."

This church is described in the "History of Green County,
Georgia, 3786-3888," as follows: (Footnote 2*)

Bethesda Baptist Church was constituted in 3785 and known as
"Whatley's Mill Church." When organized it was in Wilkes
County, but was added to Greene County in 1802. The present
building was erected in 1818 and the name changed to Bethesda.
Jesse Mercer was pastor for a number of years.... This
splendid brick structure indicates that this section was both
populous and wealthy. In early days of the church
worshipers fearful of attack by Indians carried their guns to
services."

ORNAN:Origin of the name: Oman (Or'nan) means Prince. From
the Bible, "a Jebusite prince called Araunah (Awr'nan) Samuel
II. 24:16 ff. Oman owned a threshing floor on Mt. Moriah.
David purchased this property where he built an altar to

the Lord. I Chron. 23:15-25.Hence "wheat for meal
offering" was originated.

This PROOF of Revolutionary Service is for one of the earliest
grants made. For a very short period, a grant of 250 acres was
given and was tax free during a ten year period. Then, it was
realized that Georgia needed tax funds at once, and grants were
increased to 287 1/2 acres, and were taxable.

Excerpts from a letter written by NEWNAN HEARD, son of POLLY
WHATLEY & THOMAS HEARD, JR., and hence grandson of JUDITH
THORNTON & ORNAN WHATLEY. The letter is addressed to Augustin
E. Heard, and written from Little River, Bell County, Texas,
dated Sept. 26, 1857.

"Dear Brother:

We are glad to hear from our relatives, for Father says that
they have descended from a good stock of people. He says, from
GRANDMOTHER WHATLEY, who was a THORNTON, down to Uncle Tom and
Aunt Milly, as they all called her, were as good as people ever
get to be. We are also glad to hear from Burwell Whatley, David
Strong and Jack Hubbard."

Respectfully your brother, Newnan Heard

Ornan married (1) Tabitha GREEN. Tabitha was born about 1755.

They had the following children:

1015 M i Wilson WHATLEY was born 1 on Feb 21 1775 in Wilkes County, Georgia. He died 2 on Dec 22 1850 in Georgia.

WILSON WHATLEY (GEN. III. #2)

Wilson Whatley was born February 21. 1775 (According to our SJTW
Family Bible) and in 1778 according to Wilson Whatley's Georgia Bible,
and an 1850 Census calculation, which lists his
being 72 years old in that year. He and his family spent many years
in the eastern part of Georgia. We find his wife holding membership
in a Morgan County Baptist Church during the years 1809 to 1818, and
find Wilson active in Walton County during the years 1821 through
1832. They built a home in western Georgia's Paulding County (later
named Polk) in 1833. Wilson Whatley died December 22, 1850. The
Census Record lists his occupation
as Planter.

In the year 1821 in which the last child was born, he was elected
Trustee of the Walton County Academy. He was deeply interested in
schools and in community service and is listed on
the Board of Trustees of the Social Circle Academy in the year 1828.
He was Commissioner in the town in the year 1832.

From the Monthly Record of Baptist Church at Antioch, Morgan County,
Georgia, Nov. 1809 - Jan. 1848, No. 1 : "Sally Heard Whatley received
September 1809 constitution, and dismissed by letter January 17,
1818." (Removed to Walton County, Georgia.)

From Georgia Acts 1821, p. 3: "Wilson Whatley was a Trustee of the
Walton County Academy." From p. 1019: "The Social Circle Academy
granted charter, December 22, 1828. Board of Trustees: Wilson Whatley

From Georgia Acts, 1832, p. 98:"Town Incorporated, Commissioners:
Wilson Whatley and son, S.J.T. Whatley

Wilson Whatley married Sally Heard, who was born August 26, 1776
(according to our Family Bible) or 1779 (according to Georgia Bible
reference). They were married on April 5, 1798,
and she died May 5, 1845. She was buried on the lawn of her home in
Cedartown, Georgia with only S.H.W. on a small marker, according to a
"Study of Historic Houses of Polk County,"
written by Rosa Camerata. An excerpt of this is included on the next
page.

Sally (Heard) Whatley was a member of the famous Heard family of
Georgia, daughter of Captain Thomas Heard (1742-1808); grand-daughter
of Stephen Heard (1695-1774); and great
grand-daughter of John Heard, said to be, Earl of Tyrone, Ireland.
The lineage of her mother, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick is traceable to Sir
John Napier and Lady Elizabeth Montieth; Dr. John Woodson, who
immigrated in 1619, surgeon on the ship "George"; Joseph Royall, who
arrived o~ the "Charitee" in 1622; and other First Families of
America. The family chart outline will be found on pages following,
and a Heard Family Resume follows the chart. The Will of Thomas Heard
follows the Resume.

Capt. Thomas Heard was an original member of the "Society of the
Cincinnati", an hereditary order founded 1783 by officers of the
American Revolutionary War. Membership originally included only the
oldest living male descendant of the direct line of original members.
It is now expanded to include other direct descendants.

===========================================

WILSON WHATLEY, according to Census Reports, is assumed to have
married again after his wife Sarah Heard's death. His next marriage
appears to have been to Eleanor Bagley, who was born in Ireland,
March 19, 1781, and died in Georgia, December 6, 1852 with no issue.

We have been unable to locate a Will written by Wilson Whatley. He
died in 1850 and if a Will had been recorded for him, it is assumed it
was destroyed by tire when the County Courthouse in Cedartown was
burned in 1864 by Kilpatrick's Cavalry of Sherman's Army, when many
records prior to this date were destroyed. However, a Deed is
recorded February 3, 1853 in Deed Book A, Page 89, in which most of
his legatees are named:

From "Historic Houses, Cedartown", A WPA Study of Polk County,
Georgia, by Rosa Camerata:

"Located on South Main Street is a Pioneer home built in 1833, known
as the Whatley House. It is one of the oldest houses in Polk County.
It was built by Wilson Whatley and his wife, Sarah Heard, daughter
(should be kinswoman) of Governor Heard. She is buried in the (back)
yard of the home. A small marker marks her grave and the only
inscription on it is "S.H.W." The first Christian service held in
Cedar Valley was held in this home by Humphrey Posey, a Baptist
Missionary to Indians."
+ 1016 M ii Wyatt F. WHATLEY was born in 1770 and died in 1837.
