To the left is a death notice that appeared in one of the papers
in Glasson or Athlone announcing the death of Mary Earley, "widow of the
late Mr. Thomas Earley." She died on the 23rd of March, 1932 at the
age of about 72 (her birthdate is not known). Ballinagee refers to an area
a bit further north of Killinure along Lough Ree. "Died in Exile"
was a way of referring to anyone who died outside of Ireland. |
It is likely that Mary Earley emigrated to Chicago to be with her
dying younger brothers Thomas and Michael Killoughey. Michael died
in 1898 at the age of 30 years. Thomas died in 1904 at the age of
about 38. Mary's youngest child was born in 1895. It is possible,
then, to assume that she emigrated between 1895 and 1898 when her youngest
brother died. Did she take her youngest children with her?

Here Mary Earley is pictured with her elderly Mother, Julia Killoughey.
Julia's maiden name was McCormack suggesting a possible family relationship
to the great Irish Tenor, John McCormack who was born in Athlone.
This picture may have been taken just before Julia died in 1923.
Julia's death certificate says that she was 104 years old thus the guess
at her birthyear of 1818. Did Julia emigrate with her sons Michael
and Thomas? |
