Robert S. Gilkerson was born on Feb 18, 1821 in Barnet, Vermont.1,2 He was the son of Thomas Gilkerson and Marion Somers.1
Robert married Agnes N. Batchelder, daughter of Nathan Batchelder and Mary Nelson, on Feb 19, 1846 in Bath, New Hampshire.1
Robert and Agnes appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Manteno, Kankakee County, Illinois, enumerated Aug 1, 1860, with their children Laura, Mary, Nathan, Luther and Frank. Also in the house were John Betz, laborer, and William Batchelder, farmer.2
