     Edith Mahalia Avery was born circa 1873 in Canada.1,2 She was the daughter of Edwin Avery and Emma Vincent.

     Edith Mahalia married William John Gilkerson, son of Walker Minor Gilkerson and Prudence Thayer Somers, on Jun 20, 1893 at the Presbyterian Church in Sherbrooke, Québec. The ceremony was performed by William Shearer in the presence of the bride's sister, Fannie B. Avery, and J. Len Barrie.3,1

     Edith and William emigrated with their children Irene and Avery to the United States in 1900.1
