The following letters are transcribed exactly as found, with missing punctuation, spelling errors and for the most part without paragraphs. Please understand that with all languages new words are being formed constantly, and more archaic words are dropped from use. Also, there are words used today that may have had a different meaning or significance in past generations. It has been only in recent times that the formal spelling of words has been standardized through useage. Previously, you might find words spelled various ways within a single document. The thing to keep in mind is that generally, spelling was by the sound as it came to the ear of the person writing the document. This explains the varied spelling of surnames from census to census. So, when trying to decypher a handwritten document we should go by how the word would sound rather than by the manner in which it was spelled.

Wheat is worth from __ to 60 cts per bushel rye is worth from 50 to 62 cts per bushel. Bacon is worth from five to six cents per pound and are all dull sales at these prices and I wrote to you last summer that we expected to go Iway [Iowa?] territory but John russell moved back last September and he gave it such a name that I concluded that was no place for me and fatherinlaw also give the idea of moveing to that country and I still expect to remain in this country without times changes wheat crops very bad the hadeum?
