Welcome to the HARLEY mailing list! My name is Dianne [Harley] Wintch and I am currently the administrator of this list. I am responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible, and setting guidelines. Please keep a copy of this message on file for future reference, and please continue reading...
REMEMBER THESE ADDRESSES
If you have a question or need help and you would like to contact me directly, my email address is deharley@yahoo.com. Please put DIANNE in the subject line.
To Post a message to this list, i.e.Genealogical data, queries, etc. (things you want other members to read) send it to:HARLEY-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both.
To unsubscribe to this list, send a message to: HARLEY-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command - unsubscribe, and no additional text. You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to HARLEY as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below.
To change to DIGEST MODE (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two
steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to HARLEY-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second,
send the command "subscribe" to HARLEY-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests.
There is no formal NO MAIL mode. If you will be away for an extended period of time all you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again.
GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO THE LIST
This list is for the discussion of Genealogy and Family History, primarily relating to the HARLEY surname, and collateral family lines. Other topics relating to genealogical matters, such as migratory patterns, immigration, heraldry, historical sketches, census, wills & vital records, web sites etc. as relates to HARLEY are also encouraged.
Please, do not send file attachments (messages with files appended) to the list. If you have a file you would like to share with members, announce what you have to offer, then send the file to those who request it via private email. There are many HARLEY branches, and not everyone will want the data on all lines.
*No rude comments or 'flaming' is allowed. Do not jump to conclusions about the intent of another person. Keep responses light and friendly, especially when you are frustrated and/or trying to resolve a problem. (For definitions of flaming and related information see:
http://www.man.ac.uk/~zlsiira/Netiquette/flame.html)
Rules of other types of Forums may not necessarily apply here. If you do not like the way someone formats their queries or responses, or the content of their subject titles, please take it up with me personally, NOT in the list. This is a list for Genealogy and Family History, not for correcting others. Kindness and consideration should prevail. Again, I may be reached by sending mail to deharley@yahoo.com
Small gedcom files are permitted as long as the resulting message is no larger than 61440 bytes maximum. Please remember...NOT as attached files.
TIPS FOR POSTING
When posting your query try to give as much information as you know, i.e. dates and places of events, along with enough other family members so that the reader can positively identify if they are researching the same family. Be specific... Please remember that it helps to put something in the "subject line" of your message. Make the message as readable as possible. Do NOT use all capitals. Reserve them for the surnames, i.e.HARLEY, LEE etc.
When replying to the list (this also can apply to private replies) try to quote some portions of the previous message so that other readers are reminded what the "thread" pertains to. Make it clear what is the quoted material, and what you are adding.
Post your query frequently, perhaps once a month, if you have not yet found your ancestor. New people may join the list and have the information you are seeking.
Please send HARLEY replies to the list, not just to the original poster. Other members may benefit from the data that you provide.
Happy hunting!
