----------------------------------------

Birth:    May 1717, Green ln. Roxborough Pa.

Death:    31 Oct 1804

Reli:     Baptist

Both he and his wife were notably pious persons. The records of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, which is now (1894) situated on the northwest corner of Arch and Fourteenth (Broad) Streets, show that both Abraham and Anna Levering were baptised in the river Schuylkill, on September 11, 1756. Subsequently they became constituent members of the Roxborough Baptist Church, which was organized August 23, 1789, and he was made the first Deacon, having been chosen to that office on March 27, 1791. Until that time, since the organization, the pastor or supply officiated in the service of communion

The church, as first constituted, consisted of 32 members, of whom 11 were Leverings and 2 were married women who had borne the name. The old "meeting house," as first erected in 1793, stood in the midst of the present Leverington Cemetery. The approach from Ridge Avenue was between two long lines of Lombardy Poplar trees, while the building was surrounded by large Elms. These were consumed by fire, which destroyed the building. It was rebuilt in 1830, and like destruction compelled a third building in 1870, which also followed in flames in April, 1876. This third loss determined the congregation to remove to a new site, which was selected close against Ridge Avenue, a few rods east of the entrance gate to the long-used location.

Abraham4: In early life he lived on the Ridge Road, below the 6-mile stone (measured from Second and Market Street), where, about the year 1746, he built a large stone house upon land adjoining that of his brother Wigard, and opposite to that of his brother Jacob.

During his later years he lived on Green Lane, at the old homestead of his father. Before a meeting house was built in Roxborough his dwelling was often used as a preaching place. He was a constant attendant at church, and usually carried a large cane. He had a peculiar dislike for dogs in the meeting house, hence, whenever he found one there he caned it out.

Mrs. Levering died Aug. 1, 1799. He survived her several years. At the time of his death, which occurred on Oct. 31, 1804, he was a venerable looking man with white, flowing locks.

His estate embraced a large tract of land, upon which a part of Manayunk is now built. His will, dated Aug. 20, 1798, was proved in Philadelphia on Dec. 15, 1804. Both were interred in Leverington Cemetery.

Birth:    1719, Roxborough Philadelphia Pa

Death:    6 Jul 1782, Roxborough Philadelphia Pa

Burial:   Leverington Cemetary, Roxborough Pa

"He owned several tracts of land in Roxborough. One contained 88 acres, which he bought in 1753, and which he sold in parcels to various persons.  To recover this land one of his grandsons brought an action of ejectment in the year 1854 and another in 1857. He also owned a farm on the northerly side of the Ridge Road, at the corner of Hermit's Lane, and on it erected a large stone house similar to that of his brother Abraham. The date stone marked WL., 1742, is now in possession of Enoch Levering, who uses it as a back to his fireplace in order to keep it safe. Having sold all his lands in Roxborough. Wechard removed to Plymouth Township (then in Philad., now in) Montgomery Co., where he bought a large tract of land," etc.

The farm at the "corner of Hermit's Lane" Wechard sold and transferred to his nephew, John Levering, who lived in the house described, and died there July 28, 1832. His son Enoch succeeded to the ownership, and lived in the premises nntil he died, in June, 1775, aged 79 1/2 years. All the children of John, from the year 1778 to 1795, including Enoch, were born in this house. It is now numbered 3905 Ridge Avenue, Philad., being north of 3900th Street, formerly Hermit Street. It is still (1894) occupied by Sophia, widow of Enoch, and their uamarried daughter Sarah S., who will succeed to the title, by provision of the will of her father, on the death of her mother, who is now 86(1894) years old.

Wechard died July 6, 1782, and was buried in Lev. Cem. His will, on record in Philadelphia, is dated May 24, 1782, and was proved July 22, 1782. His signature to this will is written WECHARD Levering, a corruption of Wigard, and spelled as his pronunciation sounded.

ABRAHAM The will of Wigard Levering bequeathed "unto my son-in-law William Tunes," a sum of money for which "Samuel Tennis and John Tennis, grandsons of Wigard Levering," receipted on Feb. 13, 1751, which suggests the decease of their father prior to that date. The sons were, doubtless, born after 1720. Why they changed the spelling of their surname is not known. They lived in Towamencin Township, in Philadelphia County, which, in 1784, became a part of Montgomery County, Pa.

----------------------------------------

Birth:    1-24-1693/4, Germantown  Philadelphia Pa.

Death:    30 Jul 1762

Occ:     Innkeeper

Reli:     Quaker

Anthony Tunis rented, in 1746, what had been, since 1709, the "Wayside

Inn", and also the "William Penn Inn", from the heirs of Robert Jones, its founder and owner.

On his assumption of the Inn, Anthony added an Ordinary Room, or

"restaurant" to the Inn;  On the basis of this addition, the

Inn now became known as "Tunis Ordinary".  It continued as such until

after his death in 1762, his heirs continued to operate

it until 1776.

Since the location of Tunis Ordinary was at one of the main

intersections of the Philadelphia-Lancaster road, and the main

highway to the just-then opening West, with ever increasing traffic, the

Inn-Ordinary became an important stopping place, and

a center of activity for the township itself.

Anthony Tunis, from all accounts was an affable, gregarious person.  He

was apparently not only an inn-keeper, but was also

reported to have been a fine, experienced blacksmith;  his Inn was also

the local post office, and it is reported that

Benjamin Franklin visited there in 1763, on his inspection tour of the

province as Postmaster-General of the Colonies, and

supposed to have helped sort the mail on that visit.  Anthony was also

sheriff of Lower Merion Township.

From remaining accounts, the price of a meal at "Tunis Ordinary" was two

shillings, the same price charged for lodging a man

and feeding his horse overnight.  Anthony died between the time he wrote

his will, 6th day, 2nd month, 1762, and the date of

probate, which was 29th day, 3rd month, 1762, leaving his son, Joseph as

sole executor, and son Abraham, as trustee.  In his

will he names wife, Mary, sons Joseph and Abraham, and daughters Elenor

Cooke, Alse (Alice) Lees (dec'd), Agnes, Catherine

(Kite), Elizabeth, Hannah Reber, Bathsheba (Griffith, and six

grandchildren, and son-in-law, Evan Griffith.

It would seem that his family ran the Inn until 1776, when Abraham

Streeper acquired the Inn; during the Revolution, Streeper

joined the patriot cause, as First Lieutenant in the 4th Pennsylvania

Regiment of the Continental Line.  He left the running

of the Inn to his wife and servants.

The Inn was known as "Streeper's Inn" until about 1795, when a lavish

reception was held to celebrate the victory of major

General Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, at which

reception the General was present, since he was a resident of

a nearby community. From that day, to the present, the Inn became known as the "General Wayne Inn", although, today, it is no longer an inn or lodging place, but still serves meals and liquors as it did from its beginnings at its location, Montgomery Avenue, Merion, Pennsylvania.

----------------------------------------

Birth:    abt 1645, Haarlem, Holland

Death:    1708, Germantown Philadelphia

From Bean:  Arents Klincken, who came from Dalem, near Creyfelt, in

Holland, to this country in 1683, having known William Penn in Holland.  He built the first two-story house ever raised in Germantown, Penn having been present and partaken of the raising-dinner.  It stood near the southwest corner of Main and Tulpehocken Streets.  Arents Klincken served several years as burgess of Germantown, but finally, in 1691, declined longer service for conscience' sake.  He died at the age of eighty,

leaving a son, Anthony, a noted hunter, who spent a long life in such

exercises in the vicinity, and from whom the traditional name of Anthony has since been perpetuated in the Williams family.

Will dated 12-10-1707/1708 and probated 20 Feb 1707/1708
