Samuel, David, Joel & Robert Forrest McCorkle
of Lawrence County, Ohio

        Samuel was the second oldest son of Robert and Elizabeth Forrest McCorkle. He predeceased his farther at about age thirty. The testamentary record of Robert's death names Samuel's three sons: Joel, Robert F. and David. A granddaughter of Samuel also names Anna, but this daughter must have died before Robert, her grandfather. Both Joel and David moved to central Indiana before 1850.
       At age thirty eight, Robert Forrest McCorkle, son of Samuel, married Athalia Mounts in 1863. This photo of Robert was taken about 1905. In the 1860 census, he is found living with his mother, who had remarried Wilson Mannon. Robert and Athalia raised eight children on their farm in Union Township: Charles, Mary Elizabeth, Augustus, Naomi, Marshall Forrest, Samuel, Effie and Anna. Athalia died at age seventy nine and Robert Forrest (pictured at right) died at age ninety two, leaving a will. This small section of An Atlas of Lawrence County Ohio, Published by D. J. Lake & Co., Philadelphia, 1887, shows the farm of a Robert F. McCorkle in Union Twp. Lawrence Co., Ohio.  Adjacent is the farm of his cousin Henry Carty McCorkle. The area was known as Quaker Bottom, so named for some early Friend settlers from North Carolina. The stream to the west is the Indian Guyan. The larger road to the east is now State Route 775 and the dotted lines show the road to the two residences. The original frame dwelling of the Robert Forrest McCorkle family still stands at the spot indicated on the map and is in use as a home.  Behind this home is the original log cabin that was first constructed as a temporary residence.             Before 1850, Joel McCorkle moved to Hancock County, Indiana with several other Lawrence County residents. He, his wife Mary and daughter Elizabeth are enumerated in the October 1, 1850 Hancock census. By 1870, the McCorkles had seven living children: Elizabeth Charlotte, Martha, Lucinda, Elisha, Charles, Mary and Sarah Ann.  Joel probably died between 1900 & 1910 at the home of his son Elisha in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. Joel’s wife Mary apparently died before 1900. His daughter Mary married Elliot Thornton Billups. 

            David McCorkle seems to have moved to Indiana with Joel Simmons, his mother’s father. He probably never married and is buried with the Simmons family in the Sulphur Springs Cemetery, Henry County, Indiana. Except for the name, the tombstone is unreadable.
