  • Marriage*: 4 October 1826; Howard Co., MO; Married by Thomas Fristo, M.G. John of Ray County.; Principal=Elizabeth Titus9,5
  • Census*: 1840; Mc Corkle, Jno (index): 1 male 30/40, 1 female 30/40. Living near his brothers, George & Robert., Clay Co., MO10
  • Census: 19 November 1850; Clay Co., MO; Next to John & Elizabeth McCorkle was Squire & Kath.Titus. The McCorkles adopted some of the Titus children.1
  • Event-Misc*: 2 September 1870; Clay Co., MO; July 29 1870. The editor of the Liberty Tribune requested that the long time residents of Clay Co., MO contribute a short biography to the newspaper. The submissions were published under the title of "The Old Men of Clay County" and on Sep 2,1870 the paper printed the contribution of John McCorkle: "I was born in Augusta County, Virginia, six miles from Staunton, on the 2nd day of March, 1798. My father was a Virginian and served through the entire Revolutionary War in the American Army. He was at Yorktown, and saw Cornwallis' sword handed to General Lincoln(?). I emigrated to Kentucky in 1800. I came to Missouri in 1816, and settlied on the Cuivre in what is now Lincoln County. I came to Clay Co. in 1824 and have lived here ever since. I have always been a Democrat. Am disfranchised." I was intrigued by the reference to General Lincoln and the fact that the editor or transcribber had added a question mark to John's comments. So I did a little research and found that General Cornwallis was so embarassed by his defeat that he sent his second in command to present his sword to General Washington. This breach of protocol resulted in Washington sending his second in command, General Lincoln, to accept the symbol of defeat. So old John new his history.11
  • Death*: 10 May 1885; KS; John & Elizabeth's adopted daughter Catherine Titus Harrison & her family were recorded in Johnson Co., KS in the 1880 census, so we assume that John & Elizabeth Titus McCorkle came to live with the Harrisons some time after the Jun 12, 1880 Clay Co., MO census. Jane Simmons1,2

b. 1795, d. 20 November 1860
  • Burial*: Burlington Cemetery, Lawrence Co., OH1
  • Event-Misc*: Robert's will names wife Jane, but Jane who? Lucy Reardon's DAR papers names Jane Symonds. She also names Elizabeth Symonds as wife of Robert's brother Samuel. She attests that this info comes from the Bible of Robert Sr. Other transcribers have Samuel's wife as Seemons. Louise Woody names Sam's wife as Simmons. Jane Symonds/Simmons was very probably related to Elizabeth.

A transcription of Cabell Co., WV marriages by Carrie Eldridge notes a marriage of Robert McCorkle and Jane Smith on 21 OCT 1819.

It is possible that Robert was married twice. The 1820 Jackson Co., OH census shows a Robert McCorkle with a wife and young daughter. This is the area where Robert's brother Andrew lived. Andrew married Elizabeth Smith. Robert does not seem to be in the Lawrence Co., OH census for 1820. Robert may have married Jane Smith, then Jane Simmons. Or Jane Simmons could have married a Smith, then Robert.

Some Smith researchers claim that James Smith, father to Elizabeth that married Andrew McCorkle, also had a daughter Jane and that she is the Smith taht married Robert McCorkle..

I lean toward two marriages for Robert. Based on the fact that the McCorkles had only one child, I am guessing that Jane Smith died in bearing Elizabeth and that Robert soon married Jane Simmons.

James F. McCorkle1,2

b. between 1804 and 1810, d. circa 1840
  • Note*: A James McCorkle was a witness to deeds for land that John & Nancy McCorkle purchased, but it is clear that was not the same James McCorkle found in the 1840 Clinton Co., MO census near John ( born 1780) & Samuel McCorkle. The 1840 Clinton census, James had one male child & one female child, both under 5 years old. This profile does not fit the will of James F. McCorkle at all. This will was probated in November, 1840 and mentions his wife Sarah and four young daughters. On the other hand, the 1840 Clinton Co. census profiles of Samuel & James exactly fit the names of the children of Samuel & James found in the 1850 DeKalb Co., MO census. DeKalb was formed from Clinton in 1845. In 1850, Lydia, the widow of John McCorkle (died 1814) was in the home of James in DeKalb, so the James of 1840 Clinton/1850 Dekalb is surely the son of John (died 1814). Several researchers have suggested that James and Samuel of 1840 Clinton were both sons of John (born 1780), because they were living near this John in 1840. Certainly James was not and Samuel's 1840 Clinton profile exactly fits the Samuel found in 1830 Clay census. In 1830 this Samuel was living near the sons of John (died 1814). Further, most assume that the James that died in 1840, leaving widow Sarah, is the same James that married Sally Edwards in Clay Co. in July, 1831. I can find no James McCorkle (or variation) in the 1830 Clay Co., census, or in MO for that matter. It is most likley that James, son of John (died 1814), was living with his older brother Archibald and two of his other younger brothers. Also in the house is a much older female assumed to be Lydia, widow of John (died 1814). From all this I conclude that James F. was the son of John (born 1780). He probably came to MO shortly after the 1830 census and died shortly before the 1840 census. The 1820 Green Co. KY census shows a John McCorkle living beside Samuel McCorkle Jr. With John and his wife is a male 0-10, 2 males 10-16 and 2 females 0-10. This John is assumed to be the son of Samuel Jr. and his wife would be from a marriage prior to Nancy Wright. So the James F. also fits this profile.1,3
  • Birth*: between 1804 and 1810; KY4
  • Marriage*: 14 July 1831; Clay Co., MO; James F. McCorkle & Sally Edwards. Married by Howard Everrett, J.P.; Principal=Sarah Stonum2
  • Misc*: 1834; Clay Co., MO; James F. McCorkle wittnessed the sale of land to John and Nancy McCorkle.1
  • Death*: circa 1840; Clinton Co., MO1
  • Will*: November 1840; Clinton Co., MO; The will of James McCorkle probated. The will memtions wife Sarah and daughters Elizabeth, Anna, Jenette and Rachel.1

Nancy Lydia Wright1,2,3,4,5

  • Name Variation: Lydia Wright8
  • Birth: circa 1795; NC8
  • Birth*: circa 1798; KY3
  • Birth: circa 1802; KY5
  • Marriage*: 7 December 1824; Green Co., KY; Marrage bond: sur. Frances Smith & John McCorkle This was very likely a 2nd marriage for Nancy. There was a widow Frances Smith in 1810 Green Co. census with females in the household. One of these could have been Nancy Smith that marries ? Wright, then John McCorkle. However, I can not find a Smith-Wright marriage in the available online marriages.; Principal=John McCorkle7
  • Misc*: May 1854; Clay Co., MO; Nancy McCorkle purchased two 40 acre tracts from James & Elizabeth Cox.2
  • Census*: 16 July 1860; Clay Co., MO; A very confusing census listing: Lydia McCorkle, 65, NC; Chas Davis, 25, England; Eliza Davis, 25, MO; Nettie McCorkle, 23, MO; Sarah, 14, MO; James, 12, MO; Betty, 7, MO; Nettie, 5, MO; Eliza, 3, MO; John, 1, MO. Mary Souder identifies the children Sarah, James & Betty as daughters of Eliza. But she also names Joseph, b 1856; William, b 1858; & Rose, b 1860, as children of Eliza. She also names Thomas, b 1858 & William, b 1860 as sons of Ernita. Mary's research is confirmed by census information. So how do Nettie, Eliza & John fit into the picture? I propose that Nettie, Eliza & John Thomas are children of Ernita/Nettie.8

"Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th June 1832 State of Ohio County of Lawrence Court of Common Pleas August Term 1832 On the 29 Day of August A.D. 1832, personally appeared before the judges of the court of com. Immediately after he enlisted, he went into the service & served faithfuly the whole term, as follows, the company during the following winter was stationed at the head of the Monongahea River called (Tigres?) Valley, at Randolph County & ?? there till March 1777 - From there they went to Philadelphia - Here Declarant was sick with the small pox for some weeks - as soon as he recovered he marched & joined the main army near West Point - From there he went with the army to Brandywine & Germantown, I fought in these battles - Lay at Valley Forge during the winter following - In the spring or summer of 1778 went with the army through New Jersey to White Plains thence to West Point wher he continued till he was regulary discharged on the 14 November 1778 - This term of service was performed as a private - He further declares that he was born & raised at Augusta County, Virginia, six miles S. West of Staunton where he enlisted - Resided at Augusta Co. at (comminat?), & for year after the war.
And the said Robert McCorkel further declares, secondly, that sometime in the summer of 1780, (the month & day he does not recollec) he enlisted again at the same place when he ??? ???? in Augusta County Virginia, for the Term of Eighteen Months, & faithfuly served the whole term under the (officers?) & at the places follow - following - to wit - In the company commanded by Capt. St(r?)ubling in the first Regt. of the Virginia Line, commanded by Col. Haws - in Gen. • Event-Misc: 19 September 1833; Lawrence Co., OH; Lawrence Co., OH. Nov 29, 1830: Will of John McCorkle was produced by John Layne..... "appoint John Layne my sole exectutor. Witnesses John Layne & Samuel Layne senior on 5 October 1830". Robert McCorkle contests will. (Solomen Beckley his attorney)The court affirmed that Robt is brother to John and "nearest of kin" residing in Lawrence County. Robt declined taking letters of administration on the estate therefore the court approved John Layne administrator; bond by Philip Forsh(Forb?, Forch?) and Samuel Layne Sr. Richard Morrison, John McCrea and Isiah Crawford appointed to appraise estate. The case was continued to the next term so that the court could study the evidence. interlineations, "one cow and all my sheep", "appoint John Layne exectutor".

To me, the above court proceding is the biggest McCorkle mystery in Lawrence Co. Who was the John McCorkle that died? He had a brother, Robert, in Lawrence Co.

One explanation is that John, the son of Robert Sr. died, BUT this John is accounted for in the administration of Robert's eatate in 1835.
Another explanation is that this is the proported will of John, son of Samuel Sr. and brother to Robert Sr. of Lawrence Co. BUT John was supposedly killed in Lawrence Co. in 1814. This would have been a long, long time to keep his sheep.(I have never seen any proof of John's death date.)
Since neither one of the explanation is satisfactory, I don't know. A very long shot might be that John was the son of Samuel or John, Robert Senior's brothers from Green Co., KY. Both were in Lawrence Co c1810/1815. John Sr. had sons John & Robert. Sam Jr. had son John, but no son Robert that I know of. Could deceased John be one of their sons? If so, a lot of pedigrees would be shot down.

    More on above proceeding.
    Aug 29, 1832
John Layne filled papers to settle estate.

    Sept 19, 1833
Settlement continued again "in order to give administrator our opportunity of correcting his vouchers."

I could not find the will of Mystery John.1,15

  • Death: 6 May 1814; OH or KY; From Viking Glory..... "1n 1814 he went for land in Lawrence Co. Ohio, where he was killed by Indians" " May 6, 1814." (DLW note: Apparently Rev. McCorkle got this info from John Hale Stutesman. I have never found any official account of the death of John, but this story has been told by others with slight variations. A transcript of a January 14, 1934, Huntington WV Herald Advertiser article by R. C. Hall reads remarkably like the information found in "From Viking Glory". This article relates the above story of the death of John McCorkle, but only gives his death year as 1814. Also, other Lawrence Co., OH McCorkle lore found in the article is also found in "From Viking Glory". We have concluded that Stutesman obtained the bulk of his information about the Lawrence Co. McCorkles from the Hall article and, in turn, passed this information on to Rev. McCorkle. However, even though Mr. Hall seems to have interviewed one or more McCorkles, this transcript of the article contains several glaring errors in the lineage of the Lawrence Co., OH McCorkles. It is impossible to know if these errors came from the transcription process, McCorkle memory lapses or Mr. Hall's misunderstandings and/or mistakes. )13,3

Through Solomon Beckley his attorney, Robert McCorkle questions the interlineations and contests will. "Robt is brother to John" and “nearest of kin residing in Lawrence County". Samuel McCorkle1,2

b. circa 1720, d. 1788
  • Note: The Samuel McCorkle line has be traced and documented to Samuel and Sarah (Buchanan ?) of Augusta Co., Virginia. Samuel, or his parents, came to Augusta from their original settlement in the Derry and Paxtang region of Lancaster (now Dauplin) Co., Pennsylvania. According to William Henry Egle, Notes and Queries, Relating to Pennsylvania (pub: 1895), this area was first settled in about 1713 by Scot-Irish Presbyterians. Samuel McCorkle and John Montgomery from the north of Ireland settled in Paxtang prior to 1735. Derry Church (originally Spring Creek) was built in 1720 at a site 14 miles east of Harrisburg and Paxtang Church (originally called Fishing Creek) was located about 3 miles east of Harrisburg. The Rev. John Roan's Congregation of Derry, Paxtang and Mt. Joy (1745-1775) includes Samuel and Alexander McCorkle, as well as, several Mongomerys and Alexanders. By the 1730s, a group of the Pennsylvania McCorkles had moved down the Great Valley of Virginia to the Staunton area of Augusta Co., Virginia. They purchased land from William Beverly in an area known as Beverly Manor/Irish Tract. In 1732, Beverly petitioned the Colonial Council, "I could get a number of people from Pennnsylvania to settle on the Shenandoah if I could obtain land there". While the government at Williamsburg and the Church of England did not relish the idea of Presbyterians in Virginia, they did like the barrier to the Indians that these settlers provided. When Beverly surveyed the land in 1736 he noted that some people from Pennsylvania were already settled there. In fact, Beverly and a James McCorkle engaged in a lawsuit since James was already living on the surveyed tract. The court ruled that James could stay after he paid nominal sum to Beverly. Some early male McCorkles mentioned in Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia are: Alexander, James, Robert, Patrick, William, Benjamin, Samuel and John.      From Beverly Manor, some McCorkles moved south down the valley to Rockbridge & Montgomery Co., Virginia and to South Carolina. In about 1790, some of the South Carolina clan moved north into and around Bourbon and Fayette Co., Kentucky. Later, some of these McCorkles moved on to Miami Co., Ohio. In the mid-1790s, Robert and John, sons of Samuel and Sarah, moved from Augusta to Bath Co., Virginia. John move on to Green Co., Kentucky where he was joined by his brother Samuel. Robert moved to Kanawha Co., Virginia and finally to Lawrence Co., Ohio. John was supposedly killed while traveling from Green to Lawrence and Lydia, the widow of John, soon moved to the Ray/Clay Co. area of Missouri. Samuel died in Green Co. and Robert died in Lawrence Co.

The foremost McCorkle researcher, the Rev. Louis McCorkle, sorts the early McCorkles as follows:

"The First Three" (may have been the sons of Alexander McCorquodale),
1.James, b.c. 1700 in Argyll Co. Scotland. Landed in Philadelphia and settled in the forks of the Brandywine River in 1729. His wife was Jane and they had seven sons and one daughter.

2.William, also landed in Philadelphia, about 1730 and moved to the Valley of Virginia.

3..Samuel, settled in Paxtany c. 1737, and married an Alexander.

         "The Next Generation"
James and Robert of Waxhaw Settlement, South Carolina were almost certainly brothers,      probably the brothers of Samuel and probably the sons of James or William, above.

Alexander, of Lexington, Virginia, b.c. 1720 Ulster, Ireland. Said to be the son of William, above and probably the borther of James, Robert and Samuel.
Samuel, b.c. 1720, of Augusta, Virginia.

This points to Wiliam (2) as the father of Samuel of Augusta, but as far as I can tell, this is just a guess. Other researchers of the McCorkle line have made this connection, but I have never seen any proof of this at all. Others have guessed James as Samuel's father, but again there is no proof of this connection. It is fairly certain that the majority of the Pennsylvania McCorkles came from Ulster, Ireland, but most likely came to Ireland from Scotland during the King james Plantation Period.

From History of Rockbridge Co., VA, by Oren Morton, Pub., 1920

There are branches of McCorkles in USA, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany & Denmark.

    The McCorkle coat of arms:
Crest: A stag, standing at gaze, attired gules,(i.e. red horns)
Arms: A demi-stag, gules, naissant out of a fesse tortille,(i.e. springing out of a twisted band)
Motto: Vivat Rex!(i.e. Long Live the King)

    Development of McCorkle name:
Oldest found: Thorgisl, in the Thorgisl Saga, abt. 700 A.D.
Then: Thurkell, Thurkill, Thorkill, Thorquil, (Thurgesius in Latin), Torquil, Thorquil-dale, MacTorquil-dale, Mac Korkill-dale, McCorkindale, McCorquindall, McCorkuodell, McCorquedill, McCorkell, McCorkel, McCorkle.

Anderson's History of the Scottish Nation says:
Mac Toruil (the son of Torquil), Mac Corkle, the surname of a Highland sept, was founded by Torquil, a prince of Denmark under Kenneth the Great. Kenneth was in Ireland assisting Alpin, King of the Scots, against the Picts. Torquil, a Danish prince, was rewarded with land near Loch Awe, by Kenneth, for preforming a hazardous mission. Mac Torquil is still used in some places in the Highlands and is one of the oldest names in County Argyle. The last lineal descendant is dead. In the great invasion of North Ireland, the family moved to Derry.
  • Note*: It seems that Samuel named his first son John & his second son Samuel. The traditional Scots-Irish tradition was to name the first male child after his paternal grandfather & the second male child after his father. This is the ONLY evidence of any kind that suggests that the father of Samuel McCorkle Sr. was John McCorkle.
  • Birth*: circa 1720; It is difficult to estimate a birth date for Samuel. He owned land in Augusta by Feb 27, 1749, but he was not named as a processioner, a job usually reserved for more mature & experienced men. He seems to have been married by 1752. So I am going to guess 1720, but he could have been older or even a little younger.

Sarah Buchanan1

b. circa 1735, d. between 16 February 1789 and 17 September 1793
  • Event-Misc*: I have never seen any proof of Sarah's maiden name. The Buchanan assumption is based mainly on the fact that Patrick Buchanan was an exector for Sam's will and Mary Buchanan was a witness. Also, the close association of the Buchanans and McCorkles in Augusta and Green Counties provides more circumstantial evidence.
