Some Selected Reports from the Salisbury and Winchester Journal

Monday, February 3rd, 1812

Whereas I did, on Wednesday the 22d day of January instant, in public company, in the town of Southampton, make use of very gross and improper language respecting the character and situation of Mr.Thomas Jackman, of Wood Mill, in the parish of South Stoneham, yeoman, and for which he has justly threatened to commence legal proceedings against me, but is induced to refrain therefrom, but reason of my thus having publicly asking his pardon, contradicting and proclaiming my assertions unfounded and unjust, and promising never to offend in like manner again. I now humbly thank him for his lenity.- Dated this 31st day of January, 1812.

Francis Haily,
Witness, Thos.Gillingham.
Attorney at law, Southampton.

Mr.Humby suspecting him to be a French prisoner who had broken prison or his parole, sent for Mr.Miller, the constable of the borough, to take charge of the room, with the waiters to aid and assist.
