Immigrants

The recording of Ship Lists and Passengers was not mandatory prior to the early 1800's. Historical records and documents were used to reconstruct these arrivals and appear in numerous resources published by many authors. The published materials have been indexed and printed in a multi-volume publication. This main index is known as the "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index", edited by P. William Filby.

Other resources that can be used to determine an immigrant are census records, immigration and naturalization records, and ship passenger lists available after the early 1800's.

The following chart lists the Van Buren immigrants found in some of the above mentioned resources. Please keep in mind that the Dutch use of surnames from the early settlers may have changed to other surnames over the years. Also, the list may include people who used ships to travel from place to place in North America and returning citizens who left the United States, especially during the times of war.
