Badgers, Swailers, Hucksters and Drovers
Badgers, Swailers, Hucksters and Drovers. To become employed in any of the above occupations a Licence had to be obtained from the Justices of the Peace. So what was a badger and swailer. They were dealers of corn, eggs, butter and malt. Hucksters were hawkers, and drovers were the folks who drove sheep and cows over the country.A drover incidentally had to be at least thirty years old,a householder and married, to obtain a licence. (My thanks to Michael Spencer for this explanation & entries)
