CLARA MAE WAGNER was born May 23, 1881 at Mount Sylvan, Smith County, Texas, daughter of William Wagner (b. 1858) and Margaret Elizabeth Beckham ( B. 1856). They lived in Alabama and South Carolina before coming to Texas.(1900 Smith Co. TX Census shows, 20 yrs. old, parents from AL, boarder with Wm. shorer family.) Clara married Charley Jasper Dunn, son of Henry C. and Elizabeth (Bettie) Dunn April 21, 1902. These are my grandparents.
The Wagners came to Sterling City in a horse drawn vehicle. On seeing Clara alight fromt he coach, Charley declared "Stand back, boys, She's all Mine". Family description: had black hair, gray eyes, was very tiny, about 5'3", very sweet. In later life had hump on back. Was just starting touse a wheelchair when Charley died. Put it away and never used it agin, knowing she had family to raise alone.Sewed beautifully. Taught daughters on treadle machine. Sewed dresses for pay to support children. Lived next door to Henry and Catharine Dunn at the time Charley died. On February 2, 1936 after a lingering illness, Mes. Clara Dunn died at her home on Second Avenue in Sterling City. Her obituary read: "She was a devoted mother, a kind neighbor and a Christian in all the name implies. A good woman has gone to her eternal heritage. We are among those who mourn her passing" Clara Mae Wagner is buried at the City Cemetery, Sterling Co. TX Charley and Clara Mae Dunn had six children: DENVER DUENE, who was born February 4, 1903, and married Rubye Pittman of Big Spring; WINIFRED (Aunt Winnie) ELIZABETH, who was born February 18, 1904, and married Charley Levi Bright of Sterling City; HENRY CRITTENDON (H.C.), who was born July 14, 1905 and married Stella King; LILLIE DALE, who was born March 3, 1907, and married William Carlton King of Rochelle; CHARLEY JASPER, who was born May 3, 1908, and married Glen Eveline Hallmark fo Sterling City; and CLARA BELLE, who was born December 12, 1911 and married Guy Howard Mullins of Bakersfield, California.
