THE OREGON TOLL GATE: In 1915 when Lizzie Eichelberger Bender of Landis Homes, Lititz, PA, was 12 years old, she went to live with her Grandma Susanna Gable Eichelberger who operated the Oregon Toll Gate located near Oregon, PA. Grandma Eichelberger was then 74 years old and needed help especially when the automobile came out for transportation and over the busy time of the Lancaster Fair. Neighbors helped Grandma Eichelberger and Lizzie by bringing good food to eat while sitting at the toll gate on busy days. The toll fair from Oregon to Roseville was 12 cents. Going to church on Sunday was free. Sometimes people would get by without paying because Grandma Eichelberger would fall asleep on the job. Grandpa Eichelberger died at an early age, and Grandma was a Christian lady who raised seven children with the money she earned by keeping toll. Once a month Lizzie had the job helping to carry the money bag with mostly pennies to the pike directors, John Shriner and Lem Shirk, who lived about a mile from the toll gate. Lizzie earned 10 cents to walk that mile with a heavy load. The toll pike, which passes Oregon Dairy, was paid for in 1923. Tokens were used to pay toll.[28]
