Thomas Hughes of Llanloddian,Llanfair Caereinion

THOMAS HUGHES ORIGINS           The 1861 and 1871 Census records Thomas Hughes as being born at Llanochangel(misprint for Llanfihangel?) and Llanfihangel. More research into church records has been carried out.He dies at Llanfair in 1878 age 82.See Tomb Inscription below. So he was born circa 1796.

Thomas Hughes of Llanloddian Uchaf Farm, Llanfair,Montgomeryshire

 Wed    1826

Elizabeth Jones of Llanfair, Montgomeryshire.

Montgomeryshire Parish Records are held on microfiche at the Powys Archives, Llandrindod Wells.    In the Llanfair Caereinion Marriages is the record for Thomas Hughes marriage to Elizabeth Jones in 1826 --see above.Of interest is the fact that they have both signed their own name and that the marriage has been witnessed by a William Jones and a Thomas Davies. Could this William Jones of Gelligason, be the rich Uncle, who left his four nieces(Thomas and Elizabeth Hughes four daughters) £2000 each ?

On this 1836 Map + marks the Parish Church in Llanfair, where Thomas Hughes and Elizabeth Jones were married.Llanloddian is just off the map N of Neaudd and the G of Gelligason is E of Llanfair on the right edge of map.

MARRIAGE BONDS AND ALLEGATIONS
At the National Library there are documents called bonds and affidavits relating to about 90,000 marriages which took place in Wales between 1616 and 1837. There is an index to them.
Marriage by licence
Better-off people could avoid publicity and delay by marrying by licence. If you had a licence from the Church authorities there was no need to have the banns called. In Wales a licence would usually be issued in the bishop's name, but it was also possible to obtain a licence from the archbishop of Canterbury (`common licence').A licence was also needed for the marriage of a minor(i,e under 21years old)   - see Elizabeth Jones below..
Marriage bonds
Until 1823, the bridegroom and a friend would also enter into a bond, a document obliging them to pay a sum of money. These bonds are known as marriage bonds. If an impediment to the marriage should come to light, or if the conditions of the licence should be breached, then the bridegroom and his friend would forfeit the considerable sum of money noted in the bond. Under normal circum-stances the sum would not be paid

Example of a Marriage Bond 1777,between Edward Edmunds of Blodwal Hall and Mary Davies of Treflach, ancestors of Hannah Lewis.See Roberts Family on Jane Owen and John Jones of The Weeg ,pages.

In he National Library of Wales Archives the marriage of Thomas Hughes and his sister Mary Hughes are recorded both by Special Licence..Note that Thomas Hughes is marrying a minor i.e Elizabeth Jones is aged under 21. As their first child Thomas is born in Nov 1826,Elizabeth must already be five months pregnant.when she marries in July 1826 ! Also listed is the marriage bond between Mary Hughes(Thomas Hughes’s sister) and William Davies (of Upper Brithdir Farm,Berriew)-see under Davies Family.

The 1841 and 1851 Census record Elizabeth Hughes(Jones)as being born c.1806 Llanfair and the only entry in the Llanfair Baptism 1802-10 records, which matches this date is the entry as follows-- Feb 21 1806 Elizabeth daughter of William Jones of Gelligason and Elizabeth his wife.Note that a Wm Jones has also signed as a witness to her marriage, presumeably her father. See photos above of the beautiful Elizabethan Gelligason farmhouse, which lies only 1 mile east of Llanfair see map below. Gelli means small wood.

The IGI Index at Salt Lake City,Utah gives full details of six children’s birth’s and christenings as follows--Thomas born 29 Nov 1826, John born 24th Feb 1829, William born 19th May 1831, Morris born 2 Sept 1833(died Jan 11 1835),Elizabeth born 23 Oct 1835, Ann born 21 Mar 1838, Jane born 11 Jan 1841, all christened at the Ebenezer Independent Chapel in Llanfair.s. Note that the IGI records for the Ebenezer Chapel only run from 1818-1842( a new chapel was built in 1844-see below) so this probably explains why the youngest son Morris Stephen Hughes is not listed,However see his birth certificate dated 25 Mar 1846 and neither is the youngest daughter listed, Sarah born in 1849..

THE EBENEZER WELSH INDEPENDENT CHAPEL,  LLANFAIR CAEREINION.    The present Chapel is situated on the south side of High street, but the original goes back to 1813,but was very soon too small and a larger one was built in 1844 on land donated by Mr Griffith Evans,a Llanfair glover. It became known as Capel Top Llan or Upper chapel and was situated further along the High street. The 1851 Religious Census Return stated that the avg attendance was “Morning 100+49 scholars, Afternoon 130+7 scholars and Evening 180.”The Return was signed by John Evans, Elder,Heniarth,Llanfair. This building is now decommissioned and in use as a garage. A new Ebenezer Chapel was built in 1938 on the site of the old Eagles Inn and stll flourishes. In the 1841 Census John Evans age 40 is farming at Heniarth a farm just a 1/2 mile south east of Thomas Hughes at Llanloddian Uchaf.

The unpopular system of the Government’s collection of religious offerings in the form of Tithes from each farmer and smallholder was ended by The Tithe Commutation Act 1836 ,which replaced tithes with a rent charge decided by a tithe commission. These 1842 Tithe Maps, where drawn up to aid the Tithe Comission with their calculations.  Oriiginal Scale 1” = 6 chains.(132 yards).

Each map had a schedule attached describing each property in detail. Llanloddian Ucha Holding comprises fields no 1477-1564 amounting to 115 .1.33 acres ,a mixture of meadow, pasture, arable, wood, lea pasture plus dwelling. Thomas Hughes is the occupier of land.Frederick Thomas Saunders is the owner of the land.

By 1851 Thomas’s sons Thomas and William have left home or died and three more children have been born - Jane, Morris and Sarah.

Llanllothian(Llanloddian) consists of three townships (hamlets)- Llanl lothian Ucha(upper),Llanlothian Issa(lower) and Heniarth. Llanfair Caer einion Township abuts to the left, where Llanllothian Hall can be seen. Dolgead ,on north left edge is the home of the Jehu family(see Jones’s).Llangyniew parish is adjacent on the East(right )side.

Welsh costume
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia                                  The national dress was based on the clothes worn by Welsh country women in the early nineteenth century. They wore a striped petticoat, usually made of flannel, with a flannel open fronted bedgown over the top. They also wore an apron, a shawl and either a kerchief or a cap.
The tall black hats usually associated with the Welsh Lady costume did not appear until the late 1840s.
Between 1840 and 1870, shawls became very popular. They are not traditionally Welsh, and were worn in many places, although the shawl, usually with a checked or paisley pattern, is an accepted part of traditional costume. Shawls were also used by Welsh women to carry their babies, and this method of nursing a baby is still referred to as "Welsh fashion".
Nowadays a range of Welsh tartans have been produced which are made into shawls for ladies and cilts (welsh kilts) for men, amongst other things. The St David's Tartan or brithwe Dewi Sant is the national tartan, suitable for wear by anyone Welsh, but individual family tartans are also produced, despite there being little evidence that the Welsh (or the Scots, for that matter) traditionally used tartan to identify clans

By 1861 Thomas Hughes’s wife Elizabeth has died in 1860 aged 51,see Memorial description below.Thomas is listed at Llanloddian Isa Farm. His son John has married and moved to Upper Brithdir Farm,Berriew(see Davies Family) and his eldest daughter Elizabeth has married Richard Jones(see Jones Family) at Pontyscowrid Farm, Meifod.

The 2 1/2 inch to 1 mile O.S. map shows clearly where Llanloddian Isa farm is situated only 2 miles north of Llanfair Caereinion. In the 1841 Census the farm is listed in the township of Llanlodian Uchaf while Llanlodian Hall, Llanloddian Ganol & Garth-lwyd etc,are listed in the township of Llanoddian Isaf, which is confusing.

Three views of Llanloddian Isaf House and Farmland plus the little Chapel at the crossroad below the Farm,no doubt where the family worshippped.

In the 1871 Census . Thomas Hughes age 76,widower,born Llanfihangel is recorded as living with his son in law William Evans at Blackwood.,Llivior, ,Berriew,,William Evans has married Thomas’s daughter Sarah .Why his married daughter Ann Reynolds is also living at Blackwood is not clear. See below and under Sarah Evans(nee Hughes).               There is no record of Thomas in the 1881 Census, he has presumeably died.See Memorial description below.Thomas Hughes dies in 1878 age 82.

1871 Census, Montgomeryshire. Berriew Parish. Llivior Township. Blackwood Farm.

The 1871 Census entry for Thomas Hughes widower, age 76, confirms that he was born in the Parish of Llanfihangel in 1795/96.

Thomas Hughes tomb Llanfair
Thomas Hughes tomb edit

ThisTomb gives valuable information about Thomas and Elizabeth Hughes’s date of birth and age at death and also the demise of two of their children Maurice and William. Maurice (Morris) must be an important family name ,because a later son is named Morris Hughes to replace the deceased Morris Hughes. The Tombs lie behind the main tower of St Mary’s Church ,Llanfair Caereinion.

The farm described as Llanlothian Isaf in the 1871 and 1881 Census is occupied by another local farmer John Jones from Llangyniew. At some stage the farm is bought from the Powys Estates? and in the 1950s much of the land 100+ acres was acquired by Jowryth Williams of/from the Craigwen Estates.

Gwynne and Eleri Thomas, the present owners of Llanloddian Isaf, have converted the old barns into two beautifully appointed holiday homes, which are available for booking by phone or fax or over the internet at www.llanloddian.co.uk
