Richard Ellis. Boat Builder of Shrewsbury

Minnie Ellis Rogers, who married my grandfather John Davies Hughes of Langley Hall Farm in 1908,(see under page on “Three Shropshire Farmers”) is descended from families of Shrewsbury artisans, some originating in Mongomeryshire-again paralleling the gradually drift eastwards of many Welsh farming families.

The 1841 Census lists Minnie Ellis Rogers’ great grandmother Mary Ellis(b.Montgomeryshire) married to John Ellis a stonemason living in Back Street ,Coleham and her great grandfather Thomas Rogers a tailor married to Sarah Rogers and living also along the River Severn at Friars.

Richard Ellis bought this row of cottages c1900,which were then held in trust by our Hughes Family for nearly 90 years,

The Rowing Cup.My cousin Julian Downes(see under Marjorie Hughes on the three Shropshire farmers page) rowed for Shrewsbury and his Cambridge College. As a result Grannie Minnie Hughes presented him with a Silver Cup Inscribed Pengwern Boat  by J.Gentry Aug 5th 1872. She said it was presented to Richard Ellis for winning a sculling race.(J.Gentry owned a Jewellers shop on Pride Hill and probably supplied and engraved The Pengwern Cups).

The 1881 Census lists Richard Ellis and Jane still living at 13 Old Coleham the old home of his Grandmother Mary Ellis, which she left to Richard in her Will. They have two children Lizzie age 8 and Harry age 6. Note the Post Card above with his advert on one side and rowing boats verso..

e-mail below from Gerald Linder, the Pengwern Boat Club archivist discussing whether Richard Ellis built the Rowing Eights for Shrewsbury School and Cambridge University.Clearly the Shrewsbury School and the Pengwern Boat Clubs were giving him a great deal of business and his adverts do list the supply of racing boats.- see picture of racing fours above.

Poor Harry Ellis died age 31 of T.B. This may have been one of the reasons for the family’s move from Coleham dampness alongside the River Severn to the top of Wyle Cop.The Family Bible with lists of births and deaths, which was started by Mary Jane Hughes(nee Corfield),records Harry Ellis Rogers (her son) death Oct 11th 1906 . He is not listed in the 1901 Census-perhaps he was abroad for his health.
