Death 17 January 1956 Southwark, London, England aged 57 - Guys Hospital

Died on way to Guys Hospital from London Bridge - (from death certificate)

Funeral invitation states age as 54 (this is wrong) where as BMD registration states 59.(from-SP-Dec-2008) - BLD Marriage certificate gives him as 29 in Dec 1928, death certificate 59 in Jan 1956 all points to DOB being1898 ish. Funeral card is incorrect by a mile. My nan lied about age so much that she actually forgot in the end, when she died she was 4 years older than we thought. - Book 3 / E-mails / 17 / page 1a

Informant - W Golding - Brother in law - 141 Poland Hill House, Nelson Square, SE1

Apparently BLD did not die on London Bridge as mum thought, Larry (Henry William Drury) was working up the street. BLD was working in Cottons Cold Store in Tooley street stacking butter when he dropped. They laid him out on the table in there, although certificate says he died on route to hospital Larry said he was probably dead before he hit the floor.

The William Golding on BLD death certificate is my great uncle Bill Annies son and my nans 1/2 brother, therefore BLD's brother inlaw.
BLD was cremated my dad and I would often take flowers, he was in a private nook in the building they have there, my auntie (dads sister died age26) was a few nook's away. He has now been spread over the rose garden there but he should be in their book of rememberance, his wife Lydia is also there as Lydia Lacey but she has been recycled as well along with her brother John and her second husband Thomas. Awful isn't it as they were purchased originally they thought for life. - (from-SP-Jan-2009)

Narrative

Whilst convalescing in Deal, I have no idea from what, although mum speaks of an accident when he fell into the hold on one of the ships, he rescued a man from drowning at sea Aug 1937 and was given an award by the Royal Humane Society Oct 1937. It was reported in the evening standard. - (from Sandra Palmer nee Barton)

Narrative

Benjamin L Drury was a strong labour and union man always writing to MP’s and the prime minister, my mum says he came home every night, washed, changed and then sat at the kitchen table and wrote letters all evening. My uncle has many with quite famous signatures. I have a few from Whitehall. He also wrote to various union publications and was a fighter for workers rights. - (from Sandra Palmer nee Barton) - Book 3 / E-mails / 17 / page 1

I have a copy of a union issue penny mag for dockers called The Docks Today No7 Aug 1939 which contains a letter from BLD and refers to an article he penned in a previous issue on The Workmans Compensation Act. It was published by the dockers and portworkers league against fascism at 19 Church Lane E1, I have been unable to track anything on it. In his article he mentions coming home from WW1 in 1919 and starting work at the docks. I think he may have belonged to the National Society of operative Printers and Assistants at Caxton House in 1939, I have a letter written to him from the then General Secretary George A Isaacs. - (from Sandra Palmer nee Barton) - Book 3 / E-mails / 17 / page 4

Narrative

Queens buildings were situated on Collinson Street & Scovell Road in Southwark. Both roads running between Borough Road & Southwark Bridge Road on the site of the Old King Bench Prison ........................Today (2009) both roads are no more than entrance roads to a newer housing estate, Collinson not even having a road sign............You can get an idea of what the estate was like as Queens Buildings was much like the surviving Peabody estates in the area. See James T Drury for photos of Queens Buildings etc. - (from Les Treneman)
